Tapabento Porto Review: Is This Station Eatery Worth It?
Looking for the best seafood in Porto? Read our honest review of Tapabento, a lively culinary hotspot tucked inside the historic São Bento Station.
An Honest Review of Tapabento: Porto's Buzzing Culinary Hotspot
If you are planning a trip to Porto, chances are Tapabento has already popped up on your foodie radar.
Known as one of the most popular dining spots in the city, securing a table here requires some serious planning.
Here is my honest take on whether this bustling eatery lives up to the massive hype.
1. Tapabento: Location, Hours, and Essential Reservation Tips

Do not attempt to show up without a reservation!
You can easily book a table online via Google Maps. While we were enjoying our meal, we saw a constant stream of hopeful walk-ins being turned away or facing incredibly long wait times outside.
With over 5,500 reviews on Google and a stellar 4.6-star rating, this place is no secret.

The location itself is incredibly unique.
It is tucked right inside the historic São Bento Train Station. You literally walk past the train platforms to find the entrance, which adds a cool, vintage travel vibe to the experience.
2. The Tapabento Menu & Atmosphere

We were greeted warmly and seated right on time.
The host (who seemed to be the owner) was incredibly welcoming and attentive, which set a great tone for the night.
However, be prepared for a tight squeeze. While the restaurant is decently sized, the tables are packed very close together, which can feel a bit cramped and loud.

The absolute crowd-favorite here is the Fish and Seafood Cataplana.
We ordered one to share, alongside their famous Duck Magret to get a taste of both land and sea.
3. The Verdict: How Was the Food?

To start, we ordered a crisp draft beer and a glass of local rosé. The atmosphere is highly energetic, filled with the chatter of excited travelers and clinking glasses.

Then, the legendary Portuguese Cataplana arrived at our table.
Just look at that presentation! The aroma of fresh seafood steeping in a rich broth was absolutely mouthwatering.

It was overflowing with mussels, clams, massive prawns, and tender chunks of fresh fish.
One minor detail: the pot looks incredibly deep, but the bottom is actually layered with potatoes. It felt like a tiny culinary illusion, but the flavors more than made up for it!
The broth isn't spicy at all; instead, it is a beautifully balanced, light tomato-based seafood nectar. The portion size is massive—two light eaters could easily share this single dish and leave happy.

Next up was the Duck Magret (duck steak).
I don't usually order duck when dining out, but since so many reviews recommended this dish, we decided to take a chance.
It was a total home run. The meat was incredibly tender, perfectly cooked, and had absolutely none of that gamey flavor you sometimes get with duck. Truly exceptional.

Between the phenomenal food, the warm hospitality, and the vibrant energy, Tapabento was easily one of our most memorable meals in Porto.
If you are visiting Porto, it is absolutely worth booking a table. Just keep in mind that if you are looking for a quiet, romantic, candlelit dinner, this lively, high-energy spot might not be your best bet.
But for incredible seafood and unmatched hospitality? Tapabento is a must-visit!
