Craving authentic Japanese sushi without breaking the bank in Osaka? Sushi Kin Whity Umeda is your answer! Find out why this hidden gem offers top-notch sushi and incredible happy hour specials.
Sushikin is nestled within Whity Umeda, one of the vast
underground shopping malls connected to Umeda Station.
They open daily at 11 AM, and from opening until
2 PM, they run an amazing Happy Hour where you can grab drinks
from just 66 yen – talk about great value!
What's more, their sushi starts from just 99 yen for two pieces,
meaning you can feast to your heart's content without breaking the bank.
I actually discovered this gem while looking for a great sushi spot near the Umeda Sky Building and HEP Five Ferris Wheel after experiencing both.
How to Get to Sushikin Whity Umeda Branch
The underground passages in Umeda can be quite intricate,
so finding Whity Umeda might seem a bit daunting at first.
Let me walk you through the easiest way to get there!
Whity Umeda is an underground mall located beneath the HEP Five shopping complex,
which is instantly recognizable by the massive Ferris wheel on its rooftop.
So, your first step is to head towards the Ferris wheel,
then look for stairs leading down to the underground mall.
For an even easier route, behind the HEP Five building,
you'll find a 'Takoyaki Market' bustling with takoyaki stalls.
Just follow the takoyaki statue, like the one in the photo,
and head down the stairs.
Once you're down, Sushikin should be right there on your left!
While the directions might sound a little complicated,
just remember that 'Whity Umeda' is the underground mall
directly beneath the HEP Five building, and you'll find your way with ease.
Step Inside: Sushikin's Authentic Local Ambiance
The interior boasts a wonderfully local vibe with an
open kitchen, adding to the authentic experience.
Since it was lunchtime combined with Happy Hour,
all the table seats were already taken, and the
counter seats were also starting to fill up.
Overall, it's a cozy spot with four 4-person tables
and about ten counter seats.
As there were two of us, we were guided to the counter seats,
where only a menu and soy sauce awaited us.

My Review: Tasting the Sushi & Sashimi Menu and More!
Now, let's dive into my experience trying out a variety of dishes, including sushi and sashimi.
The staff first brought out pickled ginger (gari) and wasabi,
along with the otooshi, which was pickled yam and eggplant.
It had the unique tender texture characteristic of eggplant and yam,
but the flavor was quite light and delicious!
Since the menu at Sushi-Gin was generally so affordable,
I could order everything I wanted without hesitation.
The plating and vibrant colors of the dishes were so beautiful,
they were perfect for sharing on social media!
What's more, since I visited during happy hour,
the incredibly low prices for alcoholic drinks were a huge draw!
Even combining the Lemon Sour and Highball I ordered as my first drinks,
they only came to about 150엔,
it felt almost like getting free drinks!
And even though the prices were low, they were mixed quite strongly,
so the rich flavor was a real bonus!
After taking a comprehensive photo of all the dishes,
I really started digging into them one by one.
First up was the 'Avalanche Sushi' that I was so curious about.
Various fresh fish were piled high next to the maki sushi, looking like an exquisite cascade,
and topped with salmon roe, creating a truly beautiful and vibrant presentation.
And the taste? Absolutely outstanding!
The sashimi was incredibly fresh, with no hint of fishiness whatsoever,
and perfectly aged, giving it a wonderfully chewy yet tender texture that was just divine.
This was truly a feast for both the eyes and the palate!
The next dish is another popular choice for visitors to Sushi Kin,
the Seafood Yukhoe Monaka.
This dish also boasted stunning colors and an exquisite plating,
and felt incredibly luxurious, topped with salmon roe and even uni (sea urchin).
The uni was utterly pristine, no fishiness at all, just a rich, melt-in-your-mouth flavor.
The assortment of fish included premium selections like salmon, flounder fin, tuna, and amberjack,
truly featuring all the best ingredients.
Beneath the sashimi, there was a layer of delicate sushi rice,
making it feel almost like a gourmet kaisendon (sashimi rice bowl).
Next up was the 5-piece Assorted Tempura.
As the saying goes, a truly great Japanese restaurant shines with its tempura,
so I had a feeling the tempura here would be delicious, and I had to order it!
The batter was perfectly thin and incredibly crispy,
and indeed, it was absolutely delectable.
During Happy Hour, you can even enjoy a beer for around 100 JPY,
and I imagine it would pair perfectly with a cold beer.
Next, we savored the Tamagoyaki (rolled omelet) topped with eel.
Although the soy sauce drizzled over it made it appear savory,
it was surprisingly mild and delicate when I tasted it.
The combination of the moist, fluffy egg and the tender eel was simply divine –
I had never realized how perfectly they complement each other until I tried this dish!
After enjoying the main features, we moved on to try some classic maki rolls and sushi.
The Salmon Scallion Maki was visually striking, with the scallions standing tall,
almost resembling a miniature potted plant.
Since the salmon itself was so delicious, the maki roll was naturally fantastic.
Next up were individual pieces of salmon, shrimp, and flounder fin sushi.
Among these, the shrimp sushi was particularly noteworthy – at 99 JPY for two pieces,
it offered incredible value for money.
Despite its incredibly affordable price,
The shrimp was clean-tasting and savory,
it tasted even better than I expected.
The part that particularly captured my heart was the flounder fin, known as engawa,
which was sliced generously and thickly.
Every bite released the unique nutty richness of engawa,
filling my mouth with an incredible savory flavor.
I definitely recommend trying the engawa too!
Lastly, there was the 99 yen sushi trio.
It was so generous it practically filled a whole plate,
and this set cost less than 300 yen!
What's more, it was even more surprising because these are crowd-pleasing options like tuna mayo, corn mayo, and tamago (egg),
that almost everyone loves.
The tamago sushi was fluffy and sweet,
while the tuna mayo and corn mayo had generous toppings,
enough to fill your mouth.
For just 99 yen, the ingredients were plentiful and the portion was generous,
making it a truly satisfying meal right to the very end.
A Must-Visit Restaurant So Delicious You'll Want to Go Again and Again
I ordered all the sushi dishes I wanted,
and even though I ate until I was absolutely stuffed,
the total only came out to 8,500 yen.
Considering I had my fill of sushi and sashimi for this price,
I felt the value for money was truly outstanding.
Especially since I visited during happy hour, where lemon sours were 99 yen,
and highballs and chuhai were just 66 yen,
it felt like I got an amazing deal in Japan, where alcohol can often be expensive.
Since it was such a satisfying and delicious place,
it's a restaurant I definitely want to revisit on my next trip.
If you're traveling in Osaka and have just visited the Umeda Sky Building (Floating Garden Observatory)
or ridden the HEP Five Ferris Wheel,
I highly recommend stopping by if you're craving some sushi.
To enjoy cheaper alcoholic drinks, make sure to visit during happy hour, which is until 2 PM.
So, I strongly recommend a lunch visit!
Excessive alcohol consumption can cause stroke, memory impairment, or dementia. Drinking during pregnancy increases the risk of birth defects.
