Let me introduce you to this gem!

Literally every Airbnb host and hotel we stayed at in Zagreb

recommended this exact restaurant, so we had to check it out.

And guess what? It’s a genuine hotspot where even the locals line up

for a table!

​

The prices are super reasonable, the portions are massive,

and the owner is incredibly warm, chatty, and friendly!

It’s the ultimate comfort food spot.

It's located right on Ilica Street,

which is the main boulevard in Zagreb,

and just a 5-minute walk from Ban Jelačić Square,

so it’s incredibly easy to find!

We couldn't ride it due to ongoing construction, but

it's super close to the Zagreb Funicular and Lotrščak Tower,

making it the perfect stop to add to your daily sightseeing route.

We got there a bit early for dinner around 6:00 PM.

Even though they were fully booked with reservations,

they were incredibly sweet and managed to squeeze us in,

so we got seated right away!

Menu

Most of the food we ate in Croatia

consisted of pasta, pizza, and dry meat dishes,

so we were craving something warm with a bit of broth.

​

We loved that they had plenty of comforting, warm

soups and hearty stews to choose from.

​

Also, the portions here are absolutely massive!

If you're a party of two looking for a lighter meal,

one main dish + one side

should be more than enough to fill you up.

Exterior

If you walk slightly uphill from the main street,

you'll spot the Stari Fijaker sign.

​

Even though it was early evening and still light out,

people were already waiting outside for a table!

Don't enter through the black sign shown above;

walk a little further ahead, and you'll find the main entrance

right next to the green PAN beer sign.

Interior

The interior had a clean and modern vibe,

and since the place has been around for over 20 years,

you could really feel its rich history.

It was quite busy with lots of people,

but there was plenty of space between tables,

so it didn't feel overcrowded at all.

What We Ordered

- Zagrebacki Odrezak - €15

- Slavonski Cobanac - €17

- PAN Beer - €4 / €3.5

First, they served complimentary bread,

which tasted like a lightly fried pretzel.

It was delicious, but since the main dishes were so huge,

I only had a bite or two.

It's very similar to a cheese cutlet (like Cordon Bleu),

stuffed with ham and cheese between layers of meat and then fried.

Even though we didn't ask for it,

they were kind enough to split it onto two separate plates,

which made sharing so much easier!

​

When you cut it in half,

the cheese in the middle stretches all the way out.

While it looks exactly like a cheese pork cutlet,

it had a much lighter and cleaner flavor.

​

The side of french fries

was so perfectly crispy and fluffy—a great match for our beer!

As you can see below, the portion was massive, easily enough for 1.5 people.

The second dish we ordered was

Slavonski Cobanac

​

This is a traditional stew slow-cooked for hours

with various meats like beef, pork, and veal.

It's served so you can ladle it into individual bowls,

making it super easy to share if you're traveling with a group.

​

Because it was simmered to perfection with potatoes,

the meat was unbelievably tender and practically melted in your mouth.

Dipping the complimentary bread we got earlier into the savory broth

was an absolutely heavenly combination.

During my travels in Croatia,

I tried various local beers,

but my absolute favorite

was PAN beer!

​

Even though we were full, we couldn't resist a perfect food pairing,

so we ordered one large and one small beer!

We gave it our absolute best effort,

but sadly, we couldn't completely clear our plates... *sniff*

Lastly, here is my receipt from this 100% self-funded meal!

The two of us stuffed ourselves with meat dishes

and even had some beer, and all of it came to just €39.

Considering Croatia's prices these days, I'd say that's incredibly budget-friendly!

If you are in downtown Zagreb

and want to experience authentic local Croatian food,

this is a spot I highly, highly recommend!

​

It has a completely different charm from the salty ćevapi—

it's a cozy local gem packed with hearty, comforting stews.
