I'm going to share the winter ambiance of St. Petersburg, along with the landscapes around the Hermitage Museum that I personally saw, and some helpful visiting tips you'll want to know before your trip.
Especially if you want to truly experience the Hermitage Museum's interior, it's a great idea to think ahead about whether a self-guided visit or a guided tour is right for you!
Yes, once again, I found myself visiting Russia amidst the current situation, haha.
And just like before, everything was absolutely fine.
So, how was this trip? Let's dive into my St. Petersburg, Russia Travelogue now!

St. Petersburg, Russia
1. Moscow vs. St. Petersburg: What's the Difference?

Moscow and St. Petersburg are both iconic Russian cities, but they have distinctly different vibes.
Moscow seamlessly blends historic landmarks like Red Square and the Kremlin with modern skyscrapers,
while St. Petersburg offers a more classical and artistic atmosphere,
thanks to its canals, rivers, and stunning European-style architecture!

And when it comes to the weather, you'll find some interesting differences too.
Moscow experiences a continental climate, with cold winters and relatively warm summers,
whereas St. Petersburg, influenced by the Baltic Sea, sees frequent weather changes and often has cloudy or rainy days.
St. Petersburg is also famous for its White Nights phenomenon in summer, when the sun sets very late.
Even in winter, it's common to get a mix of snow and rain, so a portable umbrella is an absolute must!
I'll leave a link to the sturdy umbrella-parasol I used and loved, haha!

If you're seeking the vibrant charm of a major city and a deep dive into Russian history and culture, Moscow is your go-to.
But if you dream of leisurely exploring a city adorned with beautiful architecture and tranquil canals,
then St. Petersburg comes highly recommended.
2. Why I Chose St. Petersburg

For me, the absolute highlight of St. Petersburg is undoubtedly its drawbridges!
The 12 bridges spanning the Neva River are raised at night to allow ships to pass through.
Originally, these drawbridges opened to allow large cargo ships through, but now they've become a spectacular attraction best viewed from a pleasure cruise!
I witnessed the drawbridges in winter,
but I hear they're even more popular during the White Nights of summer,
when you can admire the illuminated bridges rising before a sky that never fully darkens.
Bridge opening times vary by bridge and date,
so if you plan to see them yourself,
it's wise to check the official schedule for your travel period
in advance.

And as the year-end approached,
I absolutely loved how every street was filled with lights and decorations, creating such a warm festive atmosphere.
Strolling along Nevsky Prospekt, I found an abundance of souvenir shops, restaurants, and cafes, offering plenty to see and explore.

It was so beautiful, and it felt even more European than Moscow.
The area around Palace Square, home to the world-renowned
Hermitage Museum, one of the world's top three art museums,
is also a place where you can explore its deep connection to history.
If you're visiting for a short period, like I did,
squeezed between other plans,
it can be tough to see everything. So, it's a great idea
to prioritize which spots you want to see before your trip
to make the most of your time!
If your stay in the city is brief, it's wise to plan ahead
not just for the drawbridges, but also for how you'll explore
major landmarks like Palace Square and Nevsky Prospect.
If planning your own itinerary and timing for a solo trip feels a bit daunting,
checking out core city tours could be a fantastic option.

3. The Hermitage Museum: One of the World's Top 3 Art Museums

The Hermitage Museum is
one of the iconic attractions representing
St. Petersburg, Russia.
I didn't get to leisurely explore the interior of the museum;
I mostly focused on the exterior and the surrounding streets.
As I was organizing my photos, I couldn't help but feel a lingering regret,
wishing I had gone beyond just seeing the exterior
and truly explored the interior!
But later, I realized that rather than just quickly looking around on my own without much knowledge,
it would be far more memorable to prepare a tour or guide
next time and experience it with expert explanations.

The museum's exterior, including the Winter Palace building,
is renowned for letting visitors truly soak in the atmosphere
of the Russian Imperial era.
It's an impressive place not only as a space for exhibiting art
but also because the architecture itself holds profound historical significance!

Especially for a museum as grand and rich in artworks as the Hermitage,
simply admiring the exterior is a completely different experience
from truly exploring the interior exhibitions.
If you're particularly passionate about art or eager to delve into
the historical context behind the masterpieces,
it's definitely worth considering your preferred viewing style before visiting.
While freely wandering is wonderful,
if you prefer to appreciate the artworks with explanations,
a guided tour might be a perfect fit.
However, as tour durations and viewing styles can vary,
make sure to check if it aligns with your interests and schedule before booking.
Even a little preparation before your trip
can truly help you make the most of your time
on location.

If you want to not only appreciate the artworks
but also understand the flow of Western art history and the stories embedded within each piece,
be sure to check the guided tour's viewing style
and scope of explanation.
I'm also planning to visit again next time, focusing more on the cultural experience,
and take my time exploring thoroughly.

4. St. Petersburg Food Recommendations

While Russia boasts many incredible traditional dishes, I'd love to make a special recommendation for you: **Georgian cuisine**!
Here's my recommended menu!!

1) Mtsvadi (მწვადი) — This is a Georgian charcoal-grilled skewer. You'll find delicious skewered meat, vegetables, and fragrant herbs all together on your plate.
2) Khachapuri (ხაჭაპური) — A wonderfully cheesy Georgian bread baked in a stone oven. Just a heads-up, there are actually many different kinds of Khachapuri to explore!
3) Khinkali (ხინკალი) — These are Georgian dumplings generously filled with meat and a rich, savory broth. Be careful when you take your first bite, as that juicy broth inside can splash out!
Here in St. Petersburg, Georgian food, both in terms of price and ambiance, feels a bit like dining at a nice Western-style restaurant in Korea. You know, the kind of place you don't go to every day, but save for a special occasion? Fun fact: there are surprisingly many Georgian restaurants popping up in Korea these days too. I highly recommend giving it a try! Ha ha.
