As one of Hamburg's five main churches,
St. Michael's is the largest church in Northern Germany.
Locals affectionately refer to it
simply as "Michel".

It was originally built in the Baroque style between 1649 and 1661,
but was destroyed by a lightning strike in the mid-18th century and later restored.
What is the Baroque style?
An artistic and architectural style that flourished in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries.
In architecture, it characterized grand palaces of absolute monarchs, like the Palace of Versailles.

In the early 20th century, it was heavily damaged once again
by fire and World War II bombings, but has since been
meticulously restored to its late 18th-century glory.
Because of this, you'll find a beautiful blend
of ornate Baroque and Neo-Gothic styles.
St. Michael's Church Souvenir Shop

Before heading inside,
I stopped by the souvenir shop first to get my tickets.

You can purchase admission tickets for the St. Michael's clock tower observatory
right here at the gift shop.

While entry to the main church hall is free,
there is an admission fee to access the crypt and the clock tower observatory.
The admission fee is 10 EUR (~$9).

They also have a fantastic variety of souvenirs on display,
making it a great spot to browse around.
Inside St. Michael's Church

St. Michael's Church was funded and built
by the merchants and sailors of Hamburg.
As such, it was dedicated to seeking divine protection
and ensuring safe voyages for those out at sea.

With enough space to seat up to 2,500 worshippers,
the interior of the church is absolutely breathtaking.
Right in the center is the grand high altar,
which beautifully depicts the Resurrection of Jesus.
The moment you step inside, the sheer grandeur
instinctively makes you look up.
When you do, your eyes will immediately be drawn
to the four impressive auxiliary organs.

And at the back of the church, you'll see the kind of grand organ you often spot in European movies—
You can also see the magnificent central pipe organ.
There is a church service at noon on weekdays,
but they say you cannot enter once it has started,
so keep that in mind before you visit.
(The service lasts about 30 minutes.)
During the service, you can even catch a live pipe organ performance
echoing through the church.

The elegant-looking staircase right next to the central altar
is actually a textbook example of a classic Baroque pulpit.
When taking photos inside the church,
be absolutely sure to turn off your flash.
St. Michael's Church Crypt (Underground)

Down in the crypt of St. Michael's Church,
lies the tomb of J.S. Bach's son.

There are also historical photos of St. Michael's Church on display,
where you can see what it looked like when it was destroyed and subsequently rebuilt.

Audio guides are available for rent,
so if you want a detailed explanation of the history, I highly recommend getting one.

In stark contrast to the towering central altar upstairs,
the ceiling in the crypt was very low.

Something about it felt oddly charming.

If you look up other reviews,
many people say you don't really need to visit the crypt,
but when it comes to traveling, I'm the type of person who thinks,
"Since I'm already here, I have to see absolutely everything!"

So I added the crypt ticket to my visit,
and it turned out to have quite a lot to see and was totally worth it.
St. Michael's Church Observatory, Hamburg

Now that we've explored everything else,
it's time to head up the bell tower!

Thankfully, there is an elevator
that takes you straight to the observatory, making the trip super easy.

The clock tower stands 132 meters high.
Compared to the view from the Elbphilharmonie Plaza,
it had a completely different vibe.
And of course, you can spot the Elbphilharmonie from here too!
The artificial lake visible from the observatory
is Lake Alster (Alstersee), which was created way back in 1190.
In the late 12th century,
it was built as a reservoir
to power the mills along the Alster River.

You can also take in a panoramic view of the Elbe Tunnel,
the historic underwater tunnel that played a crucial role in the port industry.
The park you can see close to the observation deck is
Michelwiese Park.
As expected, the observation deck was extremely windy.
You have to be careful with light belongings or hats
so they don't get blown away!

After soaking in the views and healing for a bit,
I made my way back down.
Reflecting on St. Michael's Church in Hamburg, Germany

I'd heard it was spectacular, but seeing it in person,
it was far more magnificent than I ever imagined,
leaving me completely awestruck.
And looking out over the city from the observation deck,
the view of Hamburg felt
incredibly fresh and beautiful.
