On a recent trip to Hamburg, Germany, my travel companions and I stumbled upon a Schweinshaxe restaurant that everyone raves about.
We hadn't planned to visit this particular spot. Instead, a friend found it while searching on Google, and the reviews were overwhelmingly positive. Since it was also conveniently close to where we were enjoying the Hamburg nightscape, we decided to give it a try without hesitation.

This establishment has been operating as both a brewery and a pub since 1722. It's renowned among locals and expats alike for its high-quality beer and delicious Schweinshaxe.
Reservations are available and can be made directly on the restaurant's website.
What is Schweinshaxe?
Schweinshaxe

Known as Schweinshaxe or Schweinshaxen, this is one of Germany's most iconic pork dishes.
The name combines 'Schwein' (meaning pig) and 'Haxe' (referring to the hock or knuckle of a pig or cow), literally translating to 'pig's leg'.
The Entrance

The entrance itself was quite distinctive. Next to the main, larger entrance with stairs, there's a smaller, half-sized doorway – that's the actual entrance to the pub.
Inside the Brewery

If you visit without a reservation, be prepared for a potential wait. I highly recommend making a reservation if this brewery is part of your Hamburg itinerary. Since we discovered it spontaneously, we walked in without one.
The interior features noticeably low ceilings, and the unique combination of aged decor and dim lighting creates a truly distinctive atmosphere.

You'll spot impressive copper brewing tanks, which were fascinating to see up close for the first time. Despite the small entrance, the interior was surprisingly spacious, which was a pleasant surprise.

The place was packed with locals, and as a bustling pub, the sound of conversations filled the air. If you're looking for a quiet, intimate dining experience, this might not be your ideal spot, but it's perfect for soaking in a lively, authentic German atmosphere.
The Menu

Cell service can be spotty inside the restaurant, which might make translating German difficult. Luckily, the menu is available in both German and English, so you can simply ask for the English version.
Our Menu Recommendations

First things first: since this is a brewery, ordering a beer was essential. Even though I'm not a big drinker, I was curious to taste beer brewed right on the premises.
As expected, the flavor was exceptional and incredibly rich. Even the coasters for the beer glasses added to the authentic ambiance.

Crispy Gröninger pork knuckle whole shank
Schweinshaxe
This is the reason we came to this restaurant – the Schweinshaxe! We were amazed by its impressive presentation, and then even more by its incredible taste: crispy on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside.
The accompanying sauerkraut, a fermented cabbage dish popular in Eastern Europe, perfectly cut through the richness of the pork, creating an ideal pairing. It's a flavor that most travelers will absolutely love!

Brauhaus Currywurst
Currywurst
Another popular dish at the restaurant is the Currywurst, featuring sausages smothered in a flavorful curry sauce.
If you're visiting as a pair, I highly recommend this combination: a cold beer, the legendary Schweinshaxe, and the delicious Currywurst.
Our Top Recommendation for Schweinshaxe in Hamburg

If you find yourself in Hamburg, this is absolutely a must-visit restaurant. As someone who believes there's always a good reason why certain eateries receive high praise from fellow travelers, I can confidently say that if you're craving authentic Schweinshaxe and freshly brewed beer, Gröninger Privatbrauerei is the place to be.
There's nothing quite like enjoying delicious food while traveling, is there? It just makes the whole experience so much more memorable and joyful!
Gröninger Privatbrauerei Hamburg accepts restaurant reservations, which can be made on their website. If you visit without a reservation, you might have to wait, so it's a good idea to consider making one before your visit.
Mobile data reception can be poor inside the restaurant, which might make German translation difficult. In such cases, both German and English menus are available, so you can request and refer to the English menu.
If two people are visiting, we highly recommend the combination of Crispy Gröninger pork knuckle whole shank (Schweinshaxe), Brauhaus Currywurst, and beer brewed on-site. These three dishes are a popular combination at the restaurant.
Gröninger Privatbrauerei Hamburg is a popular pub frequented by locals, so it can be quite lively with people's conversations. Therefore, if you prefer a quiet atmosphere, you might want to consider this before visiting.
