Hamburg Food Guide 2026: Must-Try Restaurants & Hidden Gems
Embark on a delicious journey through Hamburg! From crispy schnitzel to juicy gourmet burgers and unique local dishes, uncover the city's best culinary experiences.

There's nothing quite like discovering delicious food when you're traveling abroad, right?
It's those small, flavorful moments that truly make a trip unforgettable.
During my recent adventure through Hamburg, Germany, I made it my mission to sample a wide array of local dishes and international delights.
While I certainly ate my way through the city, looking back, I wish I'd tried even more!
Nevertheless, I've compiled my honest recommendations – both the absolute must-try dishes and a few that you might want to skip.
Let's dive into the culinary highlights of Hamburg!
1. Schnitzel Spot, Heimathafen
📍 Heimathafen
Baumwall 5-7, 20459 Hamburg, Germany
Right after landing at Hamburg Airport, my first stop via Uber was Heimathafen, a highly-rated schnitzel restaurant!
For those unfamiliar, schnitzel is essentially a thin, breaded, and pan-fried cutlet, often made with veal or pork, and a staple in European cuisine.

The Uber ride from the airport to the restaurant cost ~$47.

When you first arrive, wait to be seated by the staff; don't rush them. In Germany, it's customary to order drinks first, then wait again for the waiter to return before ordering your food.
So, once you're seated, go ahead and order a beer to start!

The moment I took my first bite, I knew this place was a winner. The meat is tender and thin, while the breading is a bit thicker and leans towards the salty side. It's one of those dishes that makes you think, "Wow, this is amazing!" followed by, "A little salty, but still amazing!" – a delicious cycle indeed.
I highly recommend ordering the mushroom soup alongside your schnitzel; dipping the cutlet into the soup elevates the flavor even more. It's a perfect combination!
2. Burger Spot, Burgerlich
📍 Burgerlich
Speersort 1, 20095 Hamburg, Germany
A trip to Hamburg isn't complete without indulging in a fantastic burger. In fact, I'd say if you miss out, you'll have to plan a return trip!

I shelled out ~$46 for an Uber just to get to this burger haven. Honestly, the cumulative cost of Uber rides throughout Hamburg probably added up to a significant amount!
The restaurant boasts a lively atmosphere, and it was clear that many locals frequent this spot.

They have a pretty advanced ordering system, so you don't have to wait around for a waiter; you can place your order directly on a screen!

I also tried fritz-kola, Germany's popular soda. I heard it's a favorite among older Germans, and I was pleasantly surprised by how delicious it was!

And then, the star of the show: the burger! It tasted like something you'd find at a popular gourmet burger joint back home – truly top-notch. The freshly fried French fries were equally amazing, so definitely add them to your order!
3. Local Recommended Restaurant, Restaurant Brodersen Hamburg
📍 Restaurant Brodersen Hamburg
Rothenbaumchaussee 46, 20148 Hamburg, Germany
Next, I visited Restaurant Brodersen Hamburg, a spot highly recommended by a local business contact.

I ordered Labskaus, a traditional Hamburg dish, which proved to be quite an adventurous culinary experience! Its appearance was truly unique. To describe it candidly, it looked like finely minced pork, almost like canned tuna, possibly intended to resemble ground meat. It definitely challenged my preconceived notions of German cuisine.

Breaking the soft-boiled egg and mixing it in added a wonderful flavor, complementing the distinct peppery notes typical of German cooking. However, the accompanying fish wasn't visually appealing, and honestly, I didn't even try it. (My American companion didn't touch the fish either!)
4. Hamburg Airport Croissant
📍 Hamburg Airport
Flughafenstr. 1-3, 22335 Hamburg, Germany
I simply had to document this incredible croissant I devoured inside Hamburg Airport. It was unexpectedly delicious!

After past experiences where airport food often fell short, this croissant completely changed my perspective. It was perfectly flaky and buttery – truly a delightful surprise!
If you spot one, do yourself a favor and try it!
5. Bonus: Munich Airport Belgian Waffle

While not in Hamburg, I absolutely have to recommend the Belgian waffle I had during my layover at Munich Airport on the way home.

It was unbelievably delicious – crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside. I almost shed a tear of joy while eating it! Yum!

The waffle and orange juice combo cost me ~$15.

I initially thought my culinary journey in Hamburg would be all about burgers, but I was thrilled to discover such a diverse range of amazing dishes!
The world is full of incredible eateries waiting to be explored, and my dream is to become a global food explorer. Here's to a lifetime of delicious discoveries!
