Who goes to a football match on their honeymoon? We did! 🙌

My husband's lifelong dream was to experience a live European football match, so I made sure to fit one into our honeymoon itinerary. I scoured the schedules, looking for the perfect game during our time in Portugal.

After some consideration, we decided on a game featuring SL Benfica, Lisbon's renowned football team! It was the best match available that aligned with our travel dates.

As someone who knows absolutely nothing about football, I'd never heard of Benfica before. But a quick search revealed they are one of Portugal's most famous teams, based right in Lisbon, and compete in the Primeira Liga, the country's top-tier football league.

They even compete in the UEFA Champions League and Club World Cup, so they're definitely a big deal!

When I started looking into booking tickets for a live Benfica match in Lisbon, I was surprised by how little information was available online. I thought, "What am I going to do?"

Eventually, I just decided to go for it!

I navigated to the official website, armed with Google Translate, and managed to book the tickets myself! (Hopefully, this guide helps you too! 👏)

When you land on the Benfica official website, it might be in Portuguese or English. For easier navigation, make sure to switch it to English (you'll usually find the language selector at the bottom left of the homepage).

The calendar tab, usually on the far right of the menu, is where you can check all upcoming match schedules.

We knew there was a match during our honeymoon, but trying to book too early meant tickets weren't yet released. So, we ended up booking ours closer to our honeymoon departure date.

First, click on the person icon in the top right corner of the homepage and select "Create Account" to register.

If you find the English challenging, Google Translate is your best friend!

Alternatively, use your browser's automatic translation feature.

For email, a Gmail account is highly recommended.

Once your account is created, log in.

Enter the Gmail address you used for registration. For the Verification code, click "Send New Code by EMAIL" and check your email for the code.

After entering the code and verifying your email, click "Verify Code and Continue."

Next, you'll set a new password.

You'll need to enter it twice to confirm.

This is the personal information entry screen.

You'll need to fill in your name, date of birth, gender, country, email, and phone number.

The next step is to verify your phone number.

Click "Send New Code by SMS" to receive a code via text message.

I initially got stuck here, wondering why I wasn't receiving the code. The simple solution was to ensure I entered my full international number, including the country code, without any leading zeros if my country typically uses them for domestic calls. For instance, if your country code is +1, you'd enter it as +1-XXX-XXX-XXXX.

Enter your full international phone number, including your country code.

And just like that, the full registration process is complete! (It's not as difficult as it might seem).

I didn't capture a screenshot of the exact match we booked, so this is just a general example.

Simply select your desired match from the calendar and click 'Tickets' to make your reservation!

Booking SL Benfica match tickets was surprisingly easy through the 'Tickets' section.

Even as a first-timer, it was straightforward: pick your preferred seats from the available options in the stadium and proceed to payment.

The SL Benfica game we booked was against SC Vitória. Honestly, I hadn't heard of either team before! (Total football newbie here 😅)

But that just meant we were in for a truly authentic local experience, rather than a super famous, tourist-heavy match.

After successfully booking our SL Benfica tickets, we received the payment confirmation via Gmail.

We booked a little late after tickets went on sale, so the best seats were already gone. We picked the next best available options from what was left.

Pro tip: Book early if you want prime seats! The local fans are incredibly quick!

Looking at the ticket details, one ticket was 51 Euros, and the other was 60 Euros. The price difference? My husband skipped the member registration and booked as a guest! 😂😂 (Honeymoon planning fatigue, I guess!).

If you're planning to catch a match in Lisbon, I highly recommend both of you register as members to snag those cheaper member prices!

We paid a total of 111 Euros, which was roughly ~$131.

Oh, and remember, ticket prices vary significantly based on seating location, so keep that in mind when booking.

As stated in the PDF, entry to the Benfica match is possible via the official Benfica app or by using the QR code.
