I know, I know, I promised this Beijing duck review ages ago, and life (and another trip to Shanghai!) got in the way. While Shanghai is amazing for food, I actually didn't eat as well as I'd hoped on my last visit. That just made me miss Beijing and its incredible culinary scene even more!

Among the many delicious memories, one stands out: the Peking duck at Siji Minfu. It was absolutely divine!

Siji Minfu has several locations around Wangfujing. I visited the Dengshikou branch, but there's also a Forbidden City branch not far away! Their hours are slightly different: Mon-Thu 10:30 AM – 9:30 PM, Fri-Sun 10:30 AM – 10:30 PM. Always double-check before you go!

I arrived around 8:00 PM on my visit, and even then, the wait was substantial! I'd actually tried to go the day before in the afternoon, but the line was so long I had to leave for my next appointment. The evening wait was a bit shorter, and I was seated after about 30 minutes.

Pro Tip: You can register for a spot in line using WeChat (or a similar online queuing system) when you arrive. I did this and then wandered over to the Miniso in Wangfujing to browse until I got my alert.

Forgive my 'newbie blogger' moment – I only snapped the cover of the menu! Haha! But I do remember the prices for what I ordered. Since I was traveling solo, I could only manage a half Peking duck. There were so many other dishes I wanted to try, but one person can only eat so much!

They brought out these complimentary (or included, like appetizers) dishes, and honestly, they were quite filling on their own! The tomatoes were just... tomatoes. But the dish at the very top (I'm not sure what it was!) had a wonderfully savory, nutty flavor. And the pickled radish-like dish on the right? Oh my goodness, it was a lifesaver!

Peking duck can be quite rich, and this tangy, refreshing side perfectly cut through the richness. It was like a delicious pickle, and I could have eaten a whole bowl of it on its own.

Originally, I just ordered the duck, but it was late April (when I visited) and surprisingly chilly! I was wearing a light long-sleeved shirt but was freezing. So, I added a warm soup to my order. I don't remember the exact name, but it tasted similar to Sanlatang. It was the Sour Hot Pork Tripe Shred Soup (酸辣肚丝汤), which is sweet and sour with pork tripe. It was absolutely delicious and, most importantly, piping hot!

And finally, the moment I'd been waiting for: the Peking Duck! If you order a whole duck, they'll carve it right at your table, which is a cool performance. Since I had a half duck, I missed out on that, but it was totally fine – because it was unbelievably delicious! Oh, writing about it now makes me want it all over again. Seriously, you HAVE to visit Siji Minfu. They even gave me the duck leg separately, but I was so full I couldn't finish it. Next time, I'm definitely bringing someone along! Whenever I travel to China solo, I always wish I had someone to share more dishes with.

Prices

Siji Minfu isn't necessarily the cheapest option for Peking duck in Beijing. While it's certainly more affordable than what you'd find in the US, there are many local spots that offer Peking duck for less. In fact, a local I met during my trip recommended a different, more budget-friendly place popular with Beijing residents, not far from Siji Minfu. But I had my heart set on Siji Minfu, and I'm glad I went!

Here's what I ordered and the approximate cost in USD (converted from CNY, using 1 USD ≈ 7.2 CNY):

Half Peking Duck: 159 CNY (~$22)

Pancakes: 6 CNY (~$1)

Sauce and Vegetables: 6 CNY (~$1)

My total bill came to 203 CNY (~$28). I paid conveniently at my table using Alipay.

Overall Review

You absolutely, positively MUST visit Siji Minfu at least once. While you might find other Peking duck restaurants that some consider 'tastier,' I believe Siji Minfu offers a unique dining experience with its fantastic ambiance and excellent service. The taste of the food is crucial, but the overall atmosphere and service truly elevate the meal. I personally prefer a quieter dining experience over a noisy one, and Siji Minfu perfectly fit the bill.

I'm already planning my next trip, and I'll definitely be bringing a friend or two! A half duck just wasn't enough. I'm not sure when I'll be back in Beijing, but I have a feeling it won't be too long! Highly, highly recommended. If you're planning a trip to China, make sure Siji Minfu is on your list. Just remember that waiting times can be long at any branch, so use their online queuing system and explore nearby until your table is ready!
