I love beer so much that I might as well say I travel to Japan just for it. On my recent trip to Hiroshima, I finally made a pilgrimage to the legendary Beer Stand Shigetomi.

The owner, Mr. Shigetomi, is a legendary master artisan of draft beer. His shop is so highly regarded that it sits at the very top of Tabelog's beer bar rankings.

He is so famous that he even takes on apprentices to pass down the precise art of pouring. As a self-proclaimed beer lover, skipping this spot was absolutely out of the question.

I tried visiting during my last trip to Hiroshima, but they were closed. This time, I made sure to plan my entire schedule around it!

While there is a branch inside the ekie shopping center at Hiroshima Station run by his apprentices, the main branch is where you will find the master himself, Mr. Shigetomi.

Locals I met at an izakaya the night before insisted that I must go to the main branch. While I can't compare the two since I only visited the main shop, if the locals are that passionate about it, there has to be a good reason!

I arrived around 4:40 PM to line up before the doors opened, and there was already a decent queue.

They let guests in by groups, and because there is a strict 20-minute limit per group, the turnover is incredibly fast.

They have a dedicated waiting area, and with the quick rotation, don't give up even if the line looks long! :)

Inside, the space is cozy and intimate, featuring about four small oak barrel tables. They usually guide 2 to 4 people to each barrel.

The Menu

There are no food or snacks here—only draft beer.

They serve just one brand, Asahi, but by using a single tap and varying the pouring technique, they create five completely distinct taste profiles. Every glass is priced at 750 JPY (approx. $5).

In particular, the Sharp Tsugi (Sharp Pour) and Mild Tsugi (Mild Pour) are exclusive options that you can only experience here at the main branch.

As soon as Mr. Shigetomi starts his pouring performance, everyone in the room instinctively gathers around with their phones to record.

It looks deceptively simple, but they say when someone makes a highly difficult task look effortless, you are looking at a true master.

Since they recommend starting with the Ichido Tsugi (Single Pour) for your first glass, that's exactly what I did.

The moment everyone took their first sip, collective gasps of "Umai!" (Delicious!) and "Suge!" (Amazing!) echoed through the tiny bar.

The Ichido Tsugi features sharp carbonation and an incredibly clean, crisp finish. If you love that classic, refreshing Japanese lager experience, this is the pour for you!

For my second glass, I ordered the Mild Tsugi.

Because the Mild Tsugi features a thick head of foam, it is highly recommended to order it early.

They let the foam settle slightly before serving, so if you order it too late, you might run out of your 20-minute limit and have to rush. The sweet spot is ordering your second glass when your first is about halfway empty!

Compared to the Ichido Tsugi, the Mild Tsugi has less carbonation and an ultra-smooth, velvety texture.

It coaxes out a rich, toasted malt flavor from the beer. Personally, the Mild Tsugi was my absolute favorite.

Drinking two beers in 20 minutes was a bit of a sprint, but I successfully cleared both glasses!

The taste was genuinely on a completely different level than any draft beer I've had before—it tasted fresher and cleaner than drinking straight from a brewery taproom.

Before visiting, I was highly skeptical. "Can a different pour really change the taste that much?" But after experiencing it firsthand, I am a true believer.

Honestly, it was a far more memorable and rewarding experience than any brewery tour I've ever taken!
