Escape the ordinary! Discover Hiroshima, Japan, for your Nov-Dec 2026 trip. Explore Miyajima, the charming small towns of Tomonoura and Onomichi, and uncover local culinary delights and shopping treasures.
Quick answer
- Tomonoura is a small port town near Hiroshima, known as the backdrop for the anime Ponyo, offering old alleys and serene sea views.
- Miyajima's iconic floating torii gate is best viewed by checking the tide schedule, with charts available for 2026.
- For Okonomiyaki in Hiroshima, try Momiji-Tei, but aim to visit before 6 PM to avoid evening crowds and waits.

- Consider Hiroshima for November-December 2026 travel to enjoy unique small towns, local cuisine, and shopping, avoiding more common destinations.

If you're thinking about a trip to Japan in November or December,
and Tokyo, Fukuoka, or Osaka feel a bit too familiar,
I'd love to recommend Hiroshima.
I've visited twice already and still want to go back,
so I'm even planning my next trip there! Haha.

Miyajima is an absolute must-see on any Hiroshima trip.
It's even more stunning if you check the tides before you go!
The red torii gate looked like it was floating on the water.

While exploring, I also enjoyed a local beer!
I set aside about half a day
and leisurely explored, enjoying some food and drinks :)

If you're thinking about a year-end trip,
it's a good idea to buy your flight tickets this month.
Starting in November, international fuel surcharges are reportedly
increasing from level 23 to level 27.

Since I travel frequently,
I make sure to carefully check for discounts when booking.

Hiroshima is famous for its Okonomiyaki.
The place I ate at was called Momiji-Tei.
While it didn't have any major differentiating features from other places, if you plan to visit,
I recommend going before 6 PM.
It gets crowded in the evenings, so there was a wait.

And speaking of Hiroshima, there's the famous Beer Stand Shigetomi!
I visited it myself on this trip.
The owner is famous for creating something amazing: a 'Beer University' and a 'Beer Certification' program!
If you're a beer lover, I highly recommend a visit.
There might be a bit of a wait, but the turnover is quick.

Of course, you can't leave out shopping when you're traveling in Japan!
I also stopped by Montbell in Hiroshima,
and when I visited, they had so much more stock than the stores I'd browsed in Fukuoka or Osaka,
it made the shopping experience truly satisfying!

Beyond Hiroshima city center and Miyajima,
I also visited Tomonoura and Onomichi.
Tomonoura is said to be the port town where director Hayao Miyazaki stayed
while conceptualizing 'Ponyo'.
If you're looking for a peaceful trip, exploring old alleyways and enjoying the harbor,
I highly recommend it!

And just about an hour from Hiroshima, there's
Onomichi, the 'Cat Village'!
In Onomichi, you can enjoy the stunning scenery of the Seto Inland Sea along with
plenty of feline friends.
Since Tomonoura and Onomichi require some travel time,
it can be a bit tight to fit both into a 2-night, 3-day trip.
Still, if you're curious about the charm of these popular small towns,
try to visit one of them.
I definitely felt they were worth the visit! :)

If you're tired of typical Japan trips in November-December,
don't want to miss out on shopping, and also want to experience the tranquility of a small town,
Hiroshima might just be the perfect destination for you.
