Kota Kinabalu boasts many famous resorts, but if I were to go back, I wouldn't hesitate to pick Shangri-La Tanjung Aru again.
The first thing that surprised me upon arrival was the sheer size of the lobby. As soon as I stepped in, its vast, open design immediately conveyed the grand scale of the resort.
The resort stretches out quite a distance on both sides, so getting from my room to the lobby was a bit of a walk. Seriously, this resort is huge!
But what truly made it special was how the atmosphere completely transformed as the sun began to set. That time of day was absolutely magical.
My Life-Changing Sunset in
Kota Kinabalu
The biggest reason I recommend Shangri-La Tanjung Aru is, without a doubt, the sunset.
While I'd seen countless photos, experiencing it in person was an entirely different phenomenon.
I watched the sunset on my last day, comfortably reclining on a beach chair set up right on the sand. It was pure bliss.
The moment the sky transitioned from vibrant orange to deep violet was stunning in photos, but the emotional impact of seeing it with my own eyes was far more profound.
The sky truly turned a magnificent shade of purple that evening.
I just sat there, mesmerized by the twilight, thinking, "Ah, this is why everyone raves about Kota Kinabalu's sunsets."
Even now, when I look through my travel photos, the sunset pictures are always the first ones I revisit.
Sunset Bar and Pools Also Impressed
Before catching the main event, I relaxed at the Sunset Bar, enjoying a drink as the evening began. The ambiance was absolutely fantastic.
As the sun started to dip, people gradually gathered, but it never felt crowded. Instead, there was a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere, which made the experience even better.
The swimming pools were also quite expansive. An infinity pool and a kids' pool were connected by a bridge, offering plenty of space for everyone to enjoy without feeling cramped, even with many guests.
Since I saw the sunset on my final day, I didn't get to experience it while swimming. But I can only imagine how incredible it would be to be playing in the pool and then watch the sunset from there as the day ends.
Next time I visit, I definitely want to watch the sunset from the pool!
