My Review of the Segovia & Toledo Tour

Last year, our honeymoon destination was Spain.
Staying in two cities, Barcelona and Madrid,
we embarked on several day trips to nearby towns.
Enjoying the distinct atmosphere of these small towns, so different from Korea,
and learning about their history,
all the tours were enriching and enjoyable experiences.
Among them, if I had to pick the most memorable tour,
it would be the day trip from Madrid:
the 'Segovia & Toledo Tour'.
Today, I'll share why you absolutely must take this tour,
along with a brief review of our experience.
1. Why Day Trips Are a Must When Visiting Madrid
When planning your trip to Spain, you might often see reviews on social media or forums stating,
'Madrid, as the capital, has fewer attractions.'
It's true that as a typical metropolitan city, it might lack the unique character of other towns,
and its historical traditions aren't as ancient.
However, the Madrid I experienced allowed us to
feel a more vibrant side of Spain,
and with many restaurants where English isn't widely spoken,
it truly felt like we were experiencing authentic Spain.
That said, the city center isn't overwhelmingly large, and you can explore most of it on foot,
but it might feel a little lacking in content.
Therefore, I'd recommend a 2-night, 3-day itinerary,
spending 1.5 days exploring Madrid itself, and dedicating the remaining day
to a day trip.

I highly recommend the 'Segovia & Toledo Tour'.

In just one day, you can explore Segovia, home to the 'Snow White Castle,' the ancient aqueduct, and even savor a delicious roast suckling pig. Then, journey to Toledo, where you'll discover a Europe seemingly frozen in time, with its charming Jewish Quarter, unique marzipan made by nuns, and truly spectacular viewpoints.

Although it's a long 12-hour tour,
you get to comfortably explore two cities in one day.
What's more, with comprehensive historical explanations,
the satisfaction level was incredibly high, truly worth the time invested.

3. Segovia Alcázar
Upon arriving in Segovia, it's about a
10-minute walk to the Alcázar.
The city's ochre-toned atmosphere, distinct from Barcelona or Madrid,
gave us a truly unique feeling.
Segovia's first destination is the Alcázar, famous for being the
inspiration for Snow White's castle.
Just looking at the castle's exterior, it felt magical to have a castle right before our eyes
that looked like something straight out of a fairy tale.
The entrance fee for the Alcázar is 7 Euros.
It's fascinating to delve into the history embedded within the architecture,
and since there are also great photo spots inside,
I highly recommend going inside and listening to the explanations.
Inside the Alcázar, there's such a charming and
picture-perfect spot, so make sure not to miss it!
Our guide passionately took photos for us,
and I even changed my profile picture right after the tour.
4. Segovia Cathedral, Plaza Mayor
Segovia Cathedral boasted such a grand size
that it was hard to capture it all in one shot.
While we didn't go inside, the exterior itself was magnificent,
and it was fascinating to observe the exotic architectural style.
We then passed by Plaza Mayor, Segovia's central square,
and the Old Cathedral.
Inside the Alcázar, there's a painting depicting a queen's coronation,
and this Old Cathedral is the backdrop for that painting.
As you learn history during the tour, there are moments when all
the pieces of the puzzle come together like this.
I think this is where unexpected enjoyment comes from!
5. Segovia Aqueduct
Segovia's official last stop was the iconic
Aqueduct.
I thought it wouldn't be that big from photos alone,
but in reality, it was massive, easily tens of meters tall!
The term 'aqueduct' means a 'water path,' and it was
built to transport water to residential homes.
Reportedly constructed in the 1st century, it was actually
used to transport water well into the 1900s.
6. Lunch (Cochinillo Asado)
For lunch, I highly recommend trying Segovia's traditional dish,
Cochinillo Asado.
The most famous restaurant is 'Mesón de Cándido,' which was
visited on the famous Korean travel show 'Grandpas Over Flowers.'
This place is known as the origin of Cochinillo Asado and is also
famous for its performance of cutting the roasted pig with a plate.
However, please keep in mind that it can be less friendly due to the
high number of tourists, and the prices are a bit on the higher side.
7. Toledo Cathedral
After lunch, we moved on to Toledo.
This is such a historical place that the entire town is designated
as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Our first destination was Toledo Cathedral, a Catholic church
built on top of a mosque, which means the architectural styles on the
left and right sides are different.
These are details you can only learn by taking a tour.
The entrance fee for the cathedral is 12 euros.
Inside, there were many amazing sights, such as a pipe organ that has
been in use for hundreds of years, a golden chapel, and intricate sculptures.
Discovering the history and religious significance within
was another charm of the tour.
8. Jewish Quarter & Marzipan
After visiting the cathedral, we stopped by a
Marzipan Cafe where nuns make marzipan.
Marzipan is a dessert imbued with Toledo's history.
It's delicious to pair with coffee, and gives you that nostalgic feeling,
but at 7 Euros for 4 pieces, it's quite expensive,
so I recommend savoring it with the feeling that you're 'tasting history'.
By the way, this cafe sells iced Americano,
so for those tired of hot coffee,
it's a great spot to recharge with some caffeine.
This area was historically a place where Jewish people gathered and lived,
and was said to be the old town of Toledo.
Today, it's largely uninhabited, giving it a wonderfully quiet and untouched feel,
though you'll find many houses that have fallen into ruin.
9. Toledo Viewpoint
Our final destination on this incredible tour is the breathtaking Toledo Viewpoint.
It's a truly beautiful spot, offering panoramic views of the entire city,
and for many Koreans, it's become even more famous as the stunning wedding photoshoot location
for celebrity couple Ji Sung and Lee Bo-young.
While it can be tricky to reach without a rental car,
visiting it as part of this tour made it incredibly convenient and enjoyable!
And as expected from a prime wedding photoshoot spot, your pictures here will turn out absolutely stunning.
10. Tour Reflections & Top Tips
Thanks to this tour, my Madrid trip
became an even more captivating and incredibly valuable experience!
It was truly fascinating to witness the historical face of Europe, a sight I'd only ever imagined through paintings and books.
And diving into the rich history embedded in these places was incredibly engaging.
What's more, from the Alcazar and the Aqueduct to the Toledo Viewpoint and beyond,
I captured some truly "life-shot" photos at various spots, perfect for sharing on social media!
If you embark on this tour, I wholeheartedly recommend going inside both the Alcazar and Toledo Cathedral to soak in the explanations.
Even if history isn't usually your thing, you'll find yourself naturally captivated.
And for those who might be feeling a bit "over" Spain's warm coffee culture,
definitely cap off your day with a refreshing iced Americano at the Mazapan Cafe!
