If you're visiting for the first time, this guide outlines the top 5 must-see spots in Madrid that you won't want to miss, complete with a recommended itinerary to make the most of your visit.

1. Debunking Madrid's 'Boring City' Myth

Madrid sometimes gets an unfair reputation, but trust me, it's anything but boring!

Many travelers find themselves passing through for a day or two, often due to flight connections. If that's your situation, here's how to maximize your 24-48 hours in the Spanish capital.

Factoring in photo opportunities and exploring the surrounding areas, you could easily spend a good amount of time here. Don't forget to snap some photos with the Almudena Cathedral in the background!

Keep in mind that the palace's operating hours vary by season and may change due to state events, so always check the official website before your visit. Booking your tickets online in advance is also highly recommended to save time.

On Wednesdays and Saturdays, typically around 10:00 AM, you can witness the Royal Guard changing ceremony. If your schedule aligns, try to visit during this time for an extra special experience.

However, be warned: if you plan on thoroughly exploring the Prado Museum, this itinerary can be quite exhausting!

For a more relaxed pace, especially if you have two or more days, I suggest splitting it: dedicate one day to the Royal Palace, Plaza Mayor, and Gran Vía, then save the Prado Museum and Retiro Park for the next. As a bonus tip, the sunset views from the palace area are absolutely stunning. Consider returning there in the evening after your daytime visit!
