Planning your trip to Madrid?

You've probably spent a lot of time wondering

what day trips to take from the city, right?

To be honest, Madrid is a smaller city

than you might expect,

and if you only explore the city center,

you'll run out of things to do

in just a day or two.

That's why I naturally started

thinking about tours to the surrounding areas.

I wanted to see both Segovia and Toledo

all in one day,

but planning an itinerary using public transport

felt overwhelming.

There were several types of day tours available,

but I chose one with the most reviews

and an average 5-star rating.

So, I went on a Segovia & Toledo tour

led by a Korean guide,

and to jump straight to the conclusion:

it was a day where I even snagged some incredible 'life-shot' photos!

1. Segovia & Toledo Tour: What to Expect

This tour takes you to Segovia and Toledo,

both near Madrid, all in one day.

It starts with an 8:30 AM meeting

and runs for approximately 12 hours.

You'll travel in a private vehicle

with a Korean guide.

In Segovia, you'll explore the

Alcázar, the Cathedral, and the Roman Aqueduct,

while in Toledo,

the itinerary includes the Toledo Cathedral, a Marzipan shop,

the Jewish Quarter, and a viewpoint.

Both cities are UNESCO World Heritage Sites,

so there are plenty of historical sights to see.

2. Segovia Review

​

The guide took amazing photos for us.

​

We miss you, Chuki Teacher😂

He was practically a professional photographer,

and at every photo spot, we got a ton of

'life-shot' photos.

At each photo spot, we quickly lined up

to have the guide take our pictures,

and then we were free

to explore.

Since it was a tour with three guys,

I was actually a little worried,

Everyone absolutely loved it.

Just this part instantly elevated our

satisfaction levels!

The explanations were truly insightful too.

The Segovia Alcazar is actually

the inspiration for Disney's Snow White castle,

and if we'd just walked in on our own,

we probably would've just snapped some exterior photos and moved on,

but with our guide,

we got a detailed explanation of its history,

including the coronation of Queen Isabella

and the wedding of Philip II that took place right here.

We got to uncover historical tales

we would have completely missed if we'd just looked around ourselves.

The Segovia Aqueduct was

absolutely breathtaking too.

To think an aqueduct built during the Roman Empire

still stands today –

it felt even more incredible to see it

in person.

3. Lunch & Our Toledo Experience

In Segovia,

we were given a generous amount of time for lunch.

Lunch was a 90-minute free-choice meal,

and our guide recommended some great spots,

so I got to try Segovia's famous specialty,

Cochinillo Asado (roast suckling pig).

The restaurant I visited

was 'Mesón de Cándido'.

To demonstrate just how incredibly tender the meat is,

they even perform a little show where they cut the meat with a plate

and then smash the plate!

While it's not necessarily a dish I'd wholeheartedly recommend to everyone,

it was certainly an experience

worth trying at least once in a lifetime.

After lunch, we moved on to Toledo!

At the Toledo Cathedral,

we received detailed explanations of the magnificent gold-adorned choir stalls

and intricate religious artworks.

Things we might have completely missed if we'd gone on our own

felt like exploring an art museum, thanks to our guide's explanations.

It was almost like seeing an art museum.

I'll skip the super detailed descriptions,

as I don't want to spoil too much!

But if I could tell you just one thing:

If you visit Toledo Cathedral,

you absolutely MUST see the choir stalls!

We also made a stop at a marzipan shop in Toledo,

Marzipan is a delightful sweet treat

made from almond flour and sugar.

The place I visited actually sold

marzipan made by nuns!

It has a relatively short shelf life,

so I highly recommend enjoying it right there locally

rather than buying it as a gift to take home.

Toledo is also full of shops selling souvenirs

like medieval swords and armor,

but unfortunately, I heard you can't

check them in as luggage.

So, if you're a medieval history buff,

I recommend just enjoying the spectacle!

And our final stop was the

Toledo viewpoint.

​

The photos here turn out absolutely stunning.

With the ochre-colored buildings and the Tagus River

sprawling out before your eyes,

Toledo truly felt like a city

where time had stood still.

Apparently, the celebrity couple Hyun Bin

and Son Ye-jin

are said to have taken their wedding photos right here,

and you'll completely understand why they chose this place.

It was breathtakingly beautiful.

4. Things to Know Before You Go

The entrance fees are paid to your guide on the day of the tour,

in cash.

So, it's a good idea to prepare your Euro cash in advance.

If you forget to exchange currency,

you might find yourself flustered on the day,

so make sure to take care of this in advance!

Personal earphones are also not included,

so bring your own if you need them.

Also, there's no pickup service,

so you'll need to make your own way to the meeting point at the Royal Palace of Madrid.

With a meeting time of 8:30 AM,

depending on where your accommodation is located,

you might need to get an early start!

If you were to visit Segovia and Toledo

separately, planning the itinerary can be quite a hassle.

The biggest advantage of this tour was being able to see both cities in one day.

The historical explanations were incredibly rich and informative,

but personally, I was even more satisfied because our guide

took such fantastic photos for us.

Even though three guys went,

we still managed to capture some epic, once-in-a-lifetime shots!

If you have a spare day in your Madrid itinerary,

this day trip to the surrounding areas is definitely worth it.
