Planning a summer trip to Europe in 2026? If you're like many travelers, the biggest concern on your mind is probably the weather. You love the idea of a European escape, but with news of intense heatwaves across the continent, you might be wondering, "Can I really enjoy walking around outside during the day?"

This concern is especially true when considering a trip to Spain.

Here's the takeaway: For mid-summer travel, beyond Barcelona, we highly recommend considering San Sebastián in Northern Spain instead of the scorching south.

1. Why San Sebastián is Perfect for Summer Europe Travel

In an age of increasingly severe heatwaves, what truly matters isn't just "where is famous," but "where can I visit without feeling utterly exhausted?"

Spain experiences a significant difference in perceived temperatures across its regions during mid-summer.

Today's midday temperatures in Spain, with northern and southern regions differing by about 18 degrees Fahrenheit.

San Sebastián is a coastal city located in the northern Basque Country. While it might not offer the same intense historical site experience as the south, its convenient layout—with the beach, Old Town, and incredible restaurants all in close proximity—makes for a wonderfully relaxed travel itinerary.

Its most famous landmark is La Concha Beach, known for stretching over nearly a mile long (more than 0.9 miles), and it's truly the iconic image of San Sebastián.

Imagine strolling along the beach during the day, then indulging in delicious pintxos in the Old Town by evening. Doesn't that sound like the perfect summer European vacation?

2. Barcelona vs. San Sebastián

When planning a summer trip to Spain, Barcelona is often a non-negotiable stop. With its famous Gaudí architecture and beautiful beaches, it's perfect for combining city sightseeing with beach relaxation.

However, Barcelona can get incredibly crowded during peak summer season, and its main attractions are spread out, requiring a lot of walking and transit.

In contrast, San Sebastián offers a much more relaxed coastal city experience.

La Concha Beach, the Old Town, and numerous pintxos bars are all within easy reach, making it highly satisfying even with a leisurely daily itinerary.

To summarize, Barcelona is more akin to a "must-see city" on a Spain itinerary,

while San Sebastián is closer to a "perfect city for recharging your batteries during a summer Spain trip."

3. Why Northern Spain Over the South for Summer?

Views of Seville / San Sebastián. The city atmospheres are completely different.

Many travelers consider Southern Spain for their trip, and for good reason! Cities like Seville, Granada, and Cordoba are truly enchanting.

However, the season is the critical factor.

If you're planning a summer trip to Spain, I strongly advise against visiting the south. Specifically, Seville and Cordoba can regularly reach temperatures around 104°F (40°C) in mid-summer. What should be a relaxing vacation can quickly turn into an endurance test if your daytime activities are extensive.

Of course, Southern Spain is an incredibly captivating travel destination. In spring and fall, it's virtually perfect in every way.

Let's take a look at an extreme temperature comparison, shall we?

The image on the left shows Seville's 10-day forecast, while the right displays San Sebastián's for the same period. "Muy caluroso" means "very hot"... you can clearly see the drastic difference in temperatures for the identical timeframe, right?

It's true that Northern Spain might not have as many grand historical attractions as the south.

Instead, it's a city for enjoying the atmosphere, the beaches, and, of course, the incredible food.

Ultimately, the choice depends on your personal travel preferences.

4. Accommodation & Travel Tips

San Sebastián doesn't have as vast an array of accommodation options as a city like Barcelona. Especially during the peak summer season, hotels near La Concha Beach tend to book up quickly or see significant price increases.

When I visited in the summer, all the decent hotels near the beach were already fully booked, which definitely impacted my stay!

The small box indicates the Old Town, and below it is La Concha Beach. It's best to find accommodation not far from this area.

Personally, I highly recommend staying at a hotel near La Concha Beach.

The Old Town, with its numerous pintxos bars, is also a good option. However, since the beach is not far from the Old Town, the beachfront area remains my top choice for convenience!

Staying somewhere between La Concha Beach and the Old Town is also a solid choice.

But I'd advise against staying too far from the Old Town. You'll likely be enjoying the pintxos bars late into the evening, so consider walking distance when searching for your accommodation.

When traveling to San Sebastián, flying from Madrid or Barcelona is generally the best option. Train routes are not ideal, and buses take far too long.

San Sebastián is highly recommended for those who:
