Today, I'm diving into my recent stay at the
Sercotel Hotel Europa in beautiful San Sebastian.
I'll share an honest review of this hotel, along with my top tips for choosing the best hotel location in San Sebastian and a few other places I considered (and wish I'd booked!) for your 2026 trip.

1. Where to Stay in San Sebastian: Location Guide
📍 Donostia-San Sebastian
Gipuzkoa, Spain
Above is a Google Maps view of San Sebastian (Donostia), where I've marked some key areas.
The green box highlights the Old Town, which is essentially the heart of San Sebastian and where you'll find an incredible concentration of world-famous pinxtos bars – a must-visit for any foodie!
Just below that is La Concha Beach, one of Europe's most stunning city beaches.
The red box on the right indicates the bus terminal.
The Sercotel Hotel Europa, where I stayed, is located just one block back from La Concha Beach, making it super convenient for beach access.
You'll find many hotels with fantastic views directly along the beach promenade.
While there are a few pinxtos bars across from the green box area, it's not the main hub,
and honestly, you probably won't need to venture there.
If you book a hotel in that area, you'll be about a 15-minute walk from the main pinxtos streets
and roughly the same distance from La Concha Beach.
Personally, I think it's best to be close to either La Concha Beach or the main pinxtos area – ideally both!
2. Sercotel Hotel Europa Double Room Review
📍 Sercotel Hotel Europa San Sebastián

To be completely honest, the Sercotel Hotel Europa isn't somewhere I'd enthusiastically recommend.
I ended up booking it last minute for my trip, and by then, all the truly great places were fully booked.
Keep in mind that San Sebastian in summer is a hugely popular getaway for Spaniards escaping the heat, so it gets incredibly crowded!
Just a heads-up, Sercotel is a Spanish hotel chain you'll likely spot in various cities if you're planning a trip around Spain.
Upon entering, the lobby was clean and spacious – I'd say it's probably the prettiest part of the entire hotel.
The staff were friendly and helpful, and they were happy to store my luggage.
For reference, I stayed in a standard double room.
As you enter the room, there's a mirrored closet on the left with a safe inside.
The bathroom had one of those wall-mounted hairdryers, which I personally can't stand.
They're not only inconvenient to use, but the power is usually so weak that if you have thick hair like mine, you'll end up with an aching arm!
There's no bathtub, just a clean shower stall – pretty standard, nothing much else to note.

There's a decent-sized table with a mini-fridge underneath.
A TV is mounted on the wall – though I never had time to watch it – and there's a single armchair and a small table by the window.
The room itself is quite compact, but I was able to open my suitcase near the table.
While the price point isn't outrageous and the hotel is clean, the room felt... less like a hotel room and more like a private twin room in a hostel.
Currently, a night here might set you back around ~$69, but because I stayed during peak season, I paid significantly more, which probably contributed to my overall disappointment.
3. San Sebastian Hotel Recommendations
If I were to visit San Sebastian again, I wouldn't choose the Sercotel. Instead, I've put together my top 3 dream hotels I'd love to stay in.
1. Hotel Londres y de Inglaterra |
This hotel is located directly on La Concha Beach.
The room conditions are excellent, and from your room, you can enjoy panoramic views of the expansive beach.
While some room types offer an inner city view, if you're staying here, you absolutely want a sea-facing room!
I kept admiring this hotel every time I passed by; it was actually my first choice.
There were rooms available initially, but after a few days of deliberation, it became fully booked, and I missed out on booking it.
2. Zenit convento San Martin |
This hotel is conveniently located close to where I stayed.
While it doesn't offer sea views, you can reach La Concha Beach within a 5-minute walk.
Don't let the similar location fool you, though – the room conditions and overall ratings are far superior.
When I tried to book, it was already fully booked, so I didn't get a proper look, but I'm really impressed by its elegant lobby and immaculate room conditions.
3. Lasala Plaza hotel |
This highly-rated hotel is nestled in the Old Town, offering fantastic views from the opposite side of La Concha Beach.
Its location is incredibly close to the pinxtos bar street – perfect for when you've eaten your fill and need a quick break back at the hotel!
With its excellent ratings and prime location, it looks like a tough hotel to book unless you plan well in advance.
While San Sebastian might not be on every tourist's radar, if you're heading to Spain in the summer, I wholeheartedly recommend it!
