Atari Gastroteka
Hey fellow travelers! It's Melissa, your go-to guide for authentic European eats.
If you're heading to San Sebastian, diving headfirst into the local pintxo culture is an absolute must, right?
During my food-fueled trip, I crawled through countless bars, but today, I'm sharing one of my absolute favorites: ATARI!
1. Finding Atari in the Heart of Old Town
📍 Atari Gastrolekua
C. Mayor, 18, 20003 Donostia / San Sebastian, Gipuzkoa, Spain
Opening Hours | 12:30 PM - 11:00 PM Friday & Saturday until 2:00 AM |
Closed | Tuesdays |
Reservations | Recommended for seated dining; not required for quick bites at the bar |
San Sebastian is a culinary playground, and Atari was high on my bucket list. Finding it is incredibly easy—it's located right in front of the stunning Basilica of Santa Maria del Coro.

Quick tip: If you're searching on Google Maps, you'll see it listed as Atari Gastrolekua.
That's simply the Basque name! In Spanish, it's known as Atari Gastroteka. Both refer to the exact same legendary spot.
2. Inside Atari: The Vibe & Must-Try Menu Items

Compared to many of the tiny, cramped pintxo bars in the Old Town, Atari is actually quite spacious.
There is a long, beautiful bar counter stretching down the room. While it gets packed, there's usually room to squeeze in and stand.

They also have several high-top standing tables in the main hall. Sit-down tables are limited, though.
If you want a proper sit-down meal, you definitely need to book in advance. But for the authentic pintxo-crawl experience, standing at the bar is the way to go! It makes ordering from the staff so much easier and faster.
Since I was hopping from bar to bar, I couldn't order everything, but I made sure to target their absolute best signatures. Here is what you should order:

Just look at that rich, glossy glaze...
This is their famous slow-cooked beef cheek (Carrillera de ternera) served over a bed of creamy mashed potatoes.
It's slow-braised for hours until it practically melts in your mouth. It was incredibly rich and comforting.
Atari is particularly famous for its warm, made-to-order pintxos (unlike the cold ones pre-displayed on the bar counter).

Next, I went for a mix of classic and unique bites.
On the left, we have a Piquillo pepper stuffed with tuna salad. On the right, the chef is using a blowtorch to finish off the morcilla pintxo.

The tuna-stuffed Piquillo pepper is a staple across Basque country. While you can find it almost everywhere, Atari's version features a wonderfully sweet pepper and perfectly seasoned tuna.
But the real showstopper was the morcilla (Spanish blood sausage) pintxo on the right. Look at that gorgeous, caramelized finish!
They crumble the rich morcilla, top it with a creamy, garlicky aioli, and torch it to perfection. The combination of savory, earthy sausage and smoky, creamy aioli is mind-blowing. If I go back, I'm ordering three of these just for myself. Highly recommended!

Lastly, we tried the classic Spanish croquette (croqueta).
They offer a few varieties, but I usually stick to Jamon (cured ham), though you can also find cod or tuna versions.
While it was perfectly delicious, almost every single bar in town serves amazing croquetas. It didn't particularly stand out compared to the others, so you can probably skip this one to save stomach space for their more unique dishes.
You can check out their full menu on their official website, though keep in mind that pintxo menus can change slightly depending on seasonal ingredients.

3. Local Tips for Your San Sebastian Pintxo Crawl

Atari does have a few outdoor tables, but honestly, I don't recommend sitting out there. It makes ordering more drinks or adding extra pintxos a bit of a hassle.
Ultimately, a pintxo crawl is the absolute highlight of any trip to San Sebastian.
Almost everywhere you go will serve great food. My advice? Do a quick search on Google Maps, and if a place has solid reviews, pop in and order their specific signature dishes!
One crucial tip: Many pintxo bars close on Mondays or Tuesdays. To get the full, lively experience without running into closed doors, I highly recommend planning your stay between Wednesday and Sunday. (I unfortunately visited over a Monday and learned this the hard way!)
Have an amazing, delicious trip to Spain! Cheers! :)
