GANBARA
Hola, food adventurers! As your Spain travel blogger, I'm thrilled to take you on another culinary journey.
San Sebastian is a city I visit purely for the food, so you know I was diligently hopping from one pintxos bar to the next.
Today, I'm excited to share my experience at Ganbara, another Michelin-recognized pintxos bar that truly stands out.
1. Ganbara: A Must-Visit in San Sebastian
📍 Ganbara
C. de San Jerónimo, 21, 20003 Donostia-San Sebastian, Gipuzkoa, Spain
Operating Hours | 12:30 PM - 3:30 PM 7:00 PM - 10:30 PM |
Closed | Sundays, Mondays |
Reservations | Required for table seating |
It's worth noting that many restaurants in San Sebastian have a mid-day break and are often closed on Sundays and Mondays. Keep this in mind when planning your itinerary!

If you're looking for a proper table experience, reservations are definitely a must, especially given how popular Ganbara is. However, if you're happy with a more casual standing spot at the bar, you can usually walk right in without a reservation.
You'll find standing tables both outside and inside, along with the main bar area, and then the more formal tables tucked away further inside.
2. Inside Ganbara Pintxos Bar

Right by the entrance, you'll spot the familiar Michelin recognition plaque. Honestly, in San Sebastian, it feels like every other place boasts a Michelin star or recommendation, so it almost blends in!
This place gets incredibly busy. While most pintxos bars are bustling, Ganbara, despite its size, can be a challenge to find a spot in. Be prepared to play a little 'eye-spy' for an open seat!

I managed to snag a spot at the bar, which I actually prefer! It's perfect for people-watching and chatting with fellow diners or the staff. Like other pintxos bars, they have an array of pre-made delights displayed in the showcase, while hot dishes are prepared fresh to order.

On display, you'll find pickled anchovies and what looks like thinly sliced fish on bread. Peeking out next to them is the classic Gilda pintxo, a skewer of olives, anchovies, and guindilla peppers.
3. Ganbara Menu and My Review

First things first in any Spanish establishment: order a drink! I opted for a refreshing glass of white wine to kick things off.

My apologies for not getting a clear shot of the menu! You can, however, check out their full offerings on their official website here:

From the showcase, I ordered a pintxo topped with tuna and anchovies. For a warm dish, I decided to be adventurous and try the boiled gooseneck barnacles (percebes). Have you ever had them before? They're quite a unique seafood!
You often see them in Spanish seafood markets, but they're not a common delicacy in many other parts of the world. This was my first time trying them.
A friendly staff member asked if I'd tried them before, and when I said no, they kindly demonstrated how to eat them.

You make a small cut along the middle with a knife, then gently pull the lower part of the barnacle.

With a satisfying 'pop!', the tender flesh emerges. You then simply bring it to your mouth and pull the meat out with your teeth. It's straightforward, but a little bit of work! The taste is somewhat reminiscent of a firm clam or a slightly briny octopus. It wasn't an off-putting flavor at all. While it wasn't a mind-blowing revelation, it's definitely an interesting experience for the curious palate!

Next up were the warm dishes I ordered: grilled squid and white asparagus tempura with a side of alioli sauce.
The grilled squid was absolutely incredible. Many pintxos bars in the area offer similar squid dishes, and while it's a familiar flavor, this one was exceptionally good – truly a stand-out among familiar tastes.
The white asparagus tempura was a first for me. It wasn't bad by any means, but it was more of a
