Saltimbocca San Lorenzo
Hello, fellow travel enthusiasts! Melissa here, your go-to travel blogger.
Planning a trip to Rome can be a delightful challenge, with so many incredible sights to see. But let's be real, the sheer number of highly-rated restaurants can feel just as overwhelming!
Every review I read seemed to echo the same sentiment: "You HAVE to go here if you're visiting Rome," or "This was the best meal I had in the Eternal City." It felt like a universal truth, making the decision-making process incredibly tough.
So, I dove deep, scoured menus, and picked a spot that fit perfectly with my itinerary. Today, I'm excited to share one of those gems with you.
1. Rome's Culinary Delight: Saltimbocca San Lorenzo
📍 Saltimbocca San Lorenzo
Via dei Falisci, 1/3,5, 00185 Roma RM, Italy
Operating Hours | 11:00 AM - 12:00 AM |
Closing Days | None |
Reservations Recommended | Not strictly necessary, but advisable |

Saltimbocca San Lorenzo also has a branch near Piazza Navona. While I can't confirm if the menus are identical, the photos suggest they are. The location I visited was conveniently close to my accommodation, though it's not typically in the main tourist hub.
I went without a reservation, and since the restaurant is quite spacious, it wasn't completely packed. However, during peak season or busy hours, tables can fill up quickly, so making a reservation might save you some stress. You can easily book a table through Google Maps.
2. Saltimbocca San Lorenzo Menu Highlights

The streets leading to the restaurant at night were beautifully lit with the warm glow of many eateries. Saltimbocca San Lorenzo offers outdoor seating, but since it was a bit chilly that evening, we opted for a table inside. It always fascinates me how Europeans often brave the cold to dine alfresco!

If you search for "Saltimbocca" on Google Maps in Rome, the Piazza Navona branch will also appear, which might be more convenient for those staying in a central tourist area.
Each region in Italy boasts its own iconic pasta dishes. While Bologna is famous for Ragù, Carbonara is a true Roman classic. Beyond Carbonara, Rome's culinary identity is also defined by Cacio e Pepe and Amatriciana.

I was pleasantly surprised by the menu prices, which seemed quite reasonable. Having just arrived from Sorrento, where prices were significantly higher, Rome felt like a steal! I had assumed that as a major tourist destination, Rome would be expensive, but I found that most restaurants offered pasta dishes at very fair prices.

Here's the wine list. While you can find pricier bottles up to 65 EUR, there are plenty of excellent wines in the 20 EUR range. In Italy and Spain, ordering a bottle of wine at a restaurant is often surprisingly affordable, so I highly recommend it!
I asked for a local wine recommendation and ended up ordering a fantastic bottle.
3. Savoring Rome's Iconic Pastas

The restaurant, which looked modest from the entrance, actually boasts a surprisingly spacious interior. Italians, much like the Spanish, tend to eat dinner a bit later, so if you arrive at what might be considered an early dinner time, you'll likely find the place relatively empty.

After ordering, we were served complimentary bread. What's even better? There was no coperto (cover charge) and no separate charge for the bread! This is quite rare in Rome, and I only realized it when I received the bill.
While most of the servers spoke excellent English, a few were still honing their skills, but everyone was incredibly friendly. Our wine arrived first, setting the perfect tone for the meal.

Next up, a glorious cold cut platter! My husband and I are huge fans of cold cuts, so this is a must-order for us whenever we're in Italy or Spain. Just looking at the photo makes my mouth water again! However, the portion size was much larger than expected – we wondered how we'd ever finish it all!

The wine we ordered was from Lazio, the region where Rome is located. It's like saying "Rome, Lazio region."
I asked for a dry Lazio wine recommendation, and this was their suggestion. I've found that Italian servers are excellent at recommending wines that match your preferences without pushing the most expensive options. (They've never once suggested an overly pricey bottle to me!)
Even if you're not a wine connoisseur like my husband and I, don't hesitate to describe what you like (e.g., dry and full-bodied). They'll offer a few options with explanations, so even wine novices can order with confidence!

When it came to Rome's famous pastas, we decided on Cacio e Pepe and Amatriciana. Cacio e Pepe is a simple yet flavorful dish made with black pepper and Pecorino cheese, while Amatriciana features a rich tomato sauce with guanciale.
I'm usually a big fan of Cacio e Pepe, but this one was a tad mild for my taste – I wished for a bit more pepper. However, the Amatriciana was absolutely delicious! My husband couldn't stop raving about it throughout our trip (even if he kept butchering the name).
The pasta portions were incredibly generous; I couldn't even finish mine! It seems Europeans have quite the appetite. Unlike the often-small portions you find back home, you certainly won't leave Rome feeling hungry.
Both pastas were around 12 EUR each. Considering that pasta in places like Sorrento or Amalfi often costs 18-25 EUR, Rome's prices felt quite reasonable. Of course, with the euro's current exchange rate, nothing feels truly cheap, but it’s all relative!

After our meal, they brought us a complimentary digestivo (after-dinner drink). It was sweet and delightful – such a lovely touch to end the evening!

We left feeling incredibly full, having paid a total of 71 EUR for sparkling water, a bottle of wine, a cold cut platter, and two generous pasta dishes. While we focused on pasta, the Google reviews also rave about their steak dishes, with beautiful photos to match.
With over 1,000 Google reviews and an impressive 4.6-star rating, Saltimbocca San Lorenzo truly lives up to its reputation as a must-try restaurant in Rome!
A reservation is not strictly required, but it's advisable to make one, especially during peak season or specific hours, as seats may not be available. This branch is a bit off the typical Roman tourist route, so it's not considered highly accessible.
No, Saltimbocca San Lorenzo does not charge separately for coperto (cover fee) or pre-meal bread. This is an unusual characteristic compared to other restaurants in Rome.
At this restaurant, we were able to try Cacio e Pepe and Amatriciana pasta. Both pastas were around 12 euros, which was a reasonable price compared to other areas.
The total bill, including sparkling water, a bottle of wine, and the meal, came to 71 euros. This restaurant has a high rating of 4.6 out of over 1000 Google reviews.
