Rome Fiumicino Airport to Termini: Leonardo Express Guide 2026

Touchdown in Rome! Once you land at Fiumicino Airport (FCO), you've got three main options to reach the city center:

taxi, airport bus, or train.

On my recent trip, I opted for the train to Termini Station upon arrival and a taxi back to the airport for departure. In this guide, I'll break down everything you need to know, from a detailed price comparison to finding the train platform and booking your tickets for a seamless journey.

Comparing Your Options to the City Center

First off, the Leonardo Express, priced at €14 for a one-way ticket, is incredibly efficient. It whisks you directly to Termini Station in a quick 30-35 minutes.

(While there are cheaper train options, they often involve transfers, which I don't recommend if you're looking for simplicity.)

The airport bus is definitely the most budget-friendly choice, starting from around €4-€7, but it takes longer (40-50 minutes) and can be heavily impacted by Rome's notorious city traffic.

For ultimate convenience, especially if you're traveling with a group or lots of luggage, an official taxi is a great option. They operate on a fixed fare of €55 to the city center and will drop you right at your hotel door.

Finding the Train Platform at Fiumicino Airport

Once you've cleared immigration and collected your bags, simply follow the clear 'Train' signs throughout the airport.

The train station is conveniently located right inside Fiumicino Airport, so there's no need to take an additional shuttle or venture outside.

I was a bit worried about navigating a new international airport, but the signage was so consistent that finding the platform was surprisingly straightforward.

Take the escalator down.

Don't get stuck in the long line at the entrance! Head further inside.

You have the flexibility to book your tickets in advance online or purchase them upon arrival at the airport.

Additionally, a newer, incredibly convenient option is to use a contactless payment method directly at the turnstiles.

Simply tap your international credit card, smartphone, or smartwatch on the reader, and you're good to go!

As it was my first time, I opted for a paper ticket just in case of an inspection.

While staff can check your credit card with their handheld devices, some travelers have reported occasional glitches, so a physical ticket can offer peace of mind.

At the turnstiles, simply scan your QR code from your ticket or contactless payment.

Wait for the green light, and you're through!

In the past, you had to validate your ticket by 'punching' it, but now a quick QR scan is all you need.

Seating on the Leonardo Express is first-come, first-served, so board promptly to snag your preferred spot!

My Leonardo Express Ride Experience

The train interior was surprisingly clean and comfortable.

While the aisle and seat spacing felt a bit snug, it wasn't overly inconvenient for the short journey.

Rome has a reputation for pickpockets, so I kept a close eye on my luggage throughout the ride.

However, since the Leonardo Express goes directly to Termini and primarily carries tourists, you'll mostly need to be vigilant when getting on and off the train.

In approximately 35 minutes, we arrived at Termini Station.

Just follow the 'Uscita' (Exit) signs, and you're out into the heart of Rome, ready for your adventure!
