Top Porto Hotel for a Romantic Getaway
Dom Luis I Bridge Views at River Soul Hotel

Portugal and Spain are incredibly popular right now for romantic getaways and honeymoons, aren't they?
I recently took a trip to Portugal that felt just like a honeymoon,
and I knew I needed at least one night in a hotel where I could
completely unwind with an unforgettable view. This place was perfect! >.<
While you certainly pay a premium for the view,
if you're looking for a riverview hotel for your last night in Porto,
I can't recommend this spot enough.
Since I paid for this out of my own pocket, I'm giving you
my completely honest review, from booking tips to room details :)

If you want to stay near the Douro River,
you generally choose between the Ribeira or Gaia districts!
After visiting both, I definitely preferred Gaia.
Ribeira: Older buildings, tends to be much noisier at night.
Gaia: Relatively newer buildings, much quieter at night.

The Gaia side is home to the Jardim do Morro, the Miradouro da Serra do Pilar,
and various port wine cellars, giving it a very charming vibe.
My perfect day looked like this: a morning checkout + a winery tour +
grabbing dinner, and then sipping wine on the hotel balcony while admiring the view.
It was the ultimate relaxing itinerary :)
I struggled a bit because I booked somewhat last minute (about a month out).
Because Portugal is such a popular romantic destination right now
+ there's a very limited number of rooms with true Douro River views,
my choices were pretty slim....
If you're hunting for a river view, a pro tip is to book a room with
free cancellation well in advance, and then adjust your plans if needed!

Typically, standard accommodations in Porto run about ~$150 to ~$190 a night,
and the Gaia side is often slightly more affordable than across the river.
However, that's without a view. If you want a guaranteed river view,
you should expect to budget around ~$230 to ~$300+ per night.

I figured if I'm paying for the view, I might as well get a great room,
so I booked the "Double Room - Balcony and River View"!
(Make sure the room name explicitly says "River View" when booking).
But guess what? When we checked in, they upgraded us to their best room!
We ended up in the premium suite with the absolute best view in the house >.<
I hadn't even emailed them beforehand, but that surprise upgrade
made our stay incredibly memorable.

I booked through Agoda for a weekday stay in April for around ~$284.
Because it's a relatively new property,
prices weren't showing up on every single booking platform.

The price difference across platforms
wasn't huge compared to other hotels.
So if you have a preferred booking site,
just use whatever is most convenient for you :)
When I booked, Agoda happened to be the cheapest!
One of the main reasons I chose this place
is because it's a very newly built hotel!
It was built around 2024, so it's only about 2 years old now.
The facilities are incredibly clean, modern, and fresh.

As a 4-star hotel, the service was excellent, and they happily stored our luggage!
The lobby is decorated in clean beige tones,
with comfortable seating for before or after check-in.
They also gave us discount coupons for the hotel's affiliated restaurant.

Because we got the premium suite, it was incredibly spacious the moment we walked in!!
The room I originally booked was about 280 sq ft, which isn't small,
but the Unique room is over 340 sq ft, so even the hallway felt massive.

The entryway is divided into a spacious area with a safe, coffee maker, mini-fridge,
a dedicated spot for luggage,
and a large closet with plenty of hangers.
If you've traveled in Europe, you know many hotels don't have mini-fridges.
So finding one here was a huge plus!!
We were caught off guard when our Lisbon hotel didn't have one,
but thanks to the fridge here, we could keep our Vinho Verde (green wine) perfectly chilled
and always have cold water on hand!!

And the main event—look how huge this bed is!
It felt like a full King size.
The bedding was crisp, clean, and incredibly comfortable. Passed the test!
Do you see that terrace view right behind it..?
Honestly, if you're drinking wine out there, you don't need to go anywhere else.
It's the absolute perfect private space to soak in the romance of Porto >.<
This is exactly why I highly recommend it as a couples or honeymoon hotel!!
Plus, you can enjoy the view regardless of what the weather is doing outside~!

Before we get to the terrace, a few more details about the bedroom:
I prefer lower pillows, and these were perfect.
Outlets on both sides of the bed for easy phone charging? Passed.
Modern and clean interior design? Passed!
There's space under the TV to drop your small items,
and complimentary drinking water is provided in glass bottles.

I really just wanted to soak in the atmosphere, so from the moment we checked in
until the sun went down, I just sat there staring at the view.
I completely understand why people call Porto the trip of a lifetime.
To be fair, when you're sitting on the terrace, you might occasionally make eye contact
with people walking up to the Jardim do Morro (lol),
but it really didn't bother us at all.

They provide one bath towel and one face towel per person!
And guys... the amenities actually include hair conditioner!!
So many places don't provide it, so I usually pack my own,
but it was so nice to not have to dig through my bags.
The shampoo and body wash were all great quality, too :)

The showerhead has adjustable settings,
so you don't have to worry too much about Europe's hard water!

The AC works incredibly well! Always nice to see a familiar LG unit haha.
Just keep in mind that the AC automatically shuts off if the terrace door is open,
so make sure it's closed when you want to cool down the room.
I briefly mentioned this earlier,
but if you want to maximize your stay here, try this itinerary!
Morning: Souvenir shopping in Porto's Old Town
- Drop luggage off at River Soul Hotel
- Port Wine Cellar Tour in town
- Visit Jardim do Morro if you have extra time
- Check in and chill with the hotel view

I highly recommend the tour at Taylor's Port.
It's a bit of a trek from the Old Town side,
but from this hotel, it's only a 13-minute walk (about 0.6 miles)!
The audio guides are fantastic and really help you understand the process,
making it so much easier to figure out exactly
which bottles you want to buy and take home with you ㅎ.ㅎ

Tastings are included, which is the best way to find your favorite!
You get to try 2 red ports and 1 white port.
That's 3 glasses total, and they are dangerously delicious...

Jardim do Morro is famous for its sunset and night views,
but honestly, it's gorgeous during the day as well.
If you have some time to kill before check-in, grab a spot on the grass and relax!
Truthfully, I'd recommend this hotel for the view alone,
but the brand-new facilities and incredibly friendly staff
made just drinking wine in the room an unforgettable experience :)
If you're traveling as a couple or on your honeymoon...!
I really hope you get to experience the same magic we did. ㅎ.ㅎ
River Soul Hotel is located in the Gaia area near the Douro River. The buildings in the Gaia area are relatively newer than those in the Ribeira area, and it tends to be quieter in the evenings.
River view rooms generally range from ~$198 to ~$263. The author booked a 'Double Room - Balcony with River View' on Agoda for approximately ~$231 on a weekday in April.
The rooms include a refrigerator, which is often not found in European hotels, allowing guests to keep drinks cool. Additionally, the amenities include conditioner, and the showerhead can be changed, which helps alleviate concerns about hard water.
We recommend the Taylor's Winery tour, which is a 13-minute walk from the hotel. It is the only place that offers Korean-speaking guides, and you can sample two red port wines and one white port wine.
This hotel was built around 2024, making it a new hotel that is only 1-2 years old. Therefore, the facilities themselves are clean and comfortable, and as a 4-star hotel, it provides excellent service.
