For my final stop in Madrid, I chose the magnificent El Retiro Park.

As my visit started a bit later than planned, I only had time for a quick look around. The park is conveniently located on the eastern edge of Puerta del Sol, about a 0.8-mile walk, which took me around 15-20 minutes.

Just like Barcelona has its Arc de Triomf, Madrid boasts the impressive Puerta de Alcalá, a grand gate at the entrance to the park. It's adorned with numerous sculptures, depicting what look like angels or soldiers.

The park's gates are open from 6:00 AM to 12:00 AM daily, according to Google Maps, making it accessible for early morning runs or late-night strolls.

This truly massive park is always bustling with people. You'll see plenty of runners hitting the paths and countless others enjoying a leisurely walk, soaking in the serene atmosphere.

Many visitors also enjoy relaxing picnics here; we had originally planned one ourselves. It’s truly wonderful how much green space there is, offering endless spots for a peaceful picnic. I was quite envious of that!

As you venture deeper into the park, you'll spot a small fountain. The water stream is quite tiny, but the sight of it spouting from a turtle's mouth is undeniably charming.

Continuing further, you'll reach the grand Retiro Lake. Its sheer size is the first thing that strikes you.

People were enjoying various water activities on the lake, though I have to admit the water looked a bit murky. Reaching this point, I really wished I had allocated more time for a proper park picnic. There seemed to be boat rentals available, and it would be a lovely, leisurely experience to try one out.

Right by the lake, there's a small snack bar called Kiosko Galapagos. Surprisingly, it has a Google rating of only 1.9 stars! It's almost impressive to get such a low score. Most reviews mention high prices and subpar food.

I briefly considered grabbing something to eat while I was there, but after seeing the Google reviews, I quickly changed my mind.

However, if you view it as paying for the fantastic lake view, then eating here could be a decent alternative to a picnic.

After exploring the park, as you head back towards Puerta del Sol, you'll encounter another impressive water feature: the Cybele Fountain. It seems Madrid, unlike Barcelona, is a city with an abundance of water features to admire.
