Mercado do Bolhão: Small but Mighty
Mercado do Bolhão
Porto has been popping up all over social media lately, hailed by many as a dream travel destination.
While my husband and I didn't fall completely head over heels for the city overall, Mercado do Bolhão was definitely a highlight and somewhere we'd recommend stopping by if you're visiting Porto.
1. Mercado do Bolhão: A Must-Visit in Porto
📍 Mercado do Bolhão
R. Formosa 322, 4000-248 Porto, Portugal
Operating Hours
Monday-Friday: 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM
Saturday: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM
* Closed on Sundays

We arrived in Porto super early after an overnight bus ride, so after dropping our luggage at the hotel, our first stop was Mercado do Bolhão.
We got there almost right at opening, so there were hardly any visitors, and some of the stalls hadn't even opened yet.
It's a beautifully renovated market, and while it's a bit smaller than places like La Boqueria in Barcelona, it's still packed with charm.
2. What to Eat at Mercado do Bolhão
Who doesn't love exploring local markets and grocery stores when traveling? I certainly do!
Since not everything was open during our early morning visit, we wandered around, checking out the stalls that were ready for business.

The fruit stalls near the entrance were mostly open early, while shops selling olives, preserves, and other packaged goods typically opened a bit later.
After browsing the fruit selection, I decided to buy a few items from the friendliest vendor I could find.

I grabbed one of those pre-cut fruit cups, which are also popular at markets like La Boqueria.
On the right, you'll see a fruit called granadilla. It looks just like a passion fruit but is quite different.
While the name is Spanish, it doesn't seem to have a common English name, often referred to as 'sweet granadilla'.
It looks almost identical to a passion fruit, but the taste is completely sweet with no tartness at all. It's truly unique! If you spot it, definitely give it a try.
Pro Tip: There are a few seating areas near the market entrance where you can enjoy your purchases.

My husband wasn't satisfied with just fruit, so he went off to explore other options.

Cafes selling simple pastries and sandwiches were also open early. We spent some time looking around, even using a translator to figure out what some items were.

These cafes, selling very similar-looking pastries, lined both ends of the market.

We bought two sandwiches: one with what looked like a pork cutlet (schnitzel-style) and another with ham and mushrooms. And of course, morning coffee to go with them!
That pork cutlet sandwich was surprisingly delicious! It might look a little odd, but I highly recommend it as an alternative to a hotel breakfast.
However, the other sandwich, the one that looked more visually appealing, was honestly not good at all. The bread had a strange texture. Skip that one and stick with the simple pork cutlet option. Sometimes, simple is best!
3. Taste Port Wine by the Glass Before Buying a Bottle
We revisited Mercado do Bolhão on a different afternoon. The atmosphere was much livelier with more people and all the stalls open – a much better vibe!
I knew from a travel show that you could buy Port wine by the glass here. Porto is famous for its Port wine, with many winery tour options available.
Since I'd never tried Port wine before, I thought it would be smart to sample some before deciding whether to buy a bottle to take home.
We walked around the market until we found the spot selling wine.

Just past the cafes, slightly tucked inside, you'll find a stall dedicated to wine.
They don't just offer Port wine; you can also sample Vinho Verde (green wine) and other red wines.
Refer to the photo below for prices per glass.

The right side of the menu lists the Port wine prices. We ordered one glass each of the 10-year and 20-year aged Port. The woman serving us spoke excellent English and was incredibly friendly.

While I expected the 20-year-old to be better, the difference in taste was truly remarkable! I briefly regretted not trying the 30-year-old. It made me decide that if I were to buy a bottle, I'd go for the 30-year-old. (Though, in the end, I didn't buy one.)

With our glasses in hand, we wandered through the market and even picked up some olives.
I absolutely adore olives. When I travel to Spain, I always order them as a side or buy them from markets to enjoy back at my accommodation.
Mercado do Bolhão has several stalls selling pickled olives, so I grabbed one of the pre-packaged options.
Mercado do Bolhão was one of my favorite stops during our trip to Porto.
It's not overly grand or unique, but it's an indoor market, making it a great escape from the summer heat. While it attracts many tourists, you'll also see locals doing their shopping, giving it an authentic yet tourist-friendly vibe.
Further back, you can find canned sardines, a cafe that roasts its own beans, and even flower shops, which were a treat for the eyes!
It doesn't take long to walk through, so I highly recommend adding it to your Porto itinerary.
Happy travels, everyone!
