Upon entering, the lobby immediately struck me as incredibly clean. That person in the Thai massage attire? Turns out, that's the owner of this fantastic Phu Quoc massage establishment! I was a bit surprised by their unique choice of uniform, and honestly, I didn't realize it was the owner at first, haha.
While browsing The Base Spa's offerings, a question popped into my head: why was Thai massage slightly more expensive than oil massage (even if only marginally)? This felt unusual, as typically oil massages are priced similarly, if not higher. I meant to ask, but the owner was so friendly and thorough in explaining everything else that I missed my chance. I made a mental note to ask after my session.
I opted for the Oriental Thai Massage. The owner kindly walked me through how to wear the provided attire for the session.
It's interesting, isn't it? Being genuinely kind to customers doesn't seem like it should be hard (barring truly difficult clients, of course), yet so many businesses fall short. That's why even a little extra friendliness really stands out and makes a positive impression.
They even provided disposable slippers, and the massage clothes were individually sealed in plastic. I appreciate these thoughtful little details!
I happily settled in for a ginger and lime foot bath. Personally, I prefer floor mattresses over massage beds (where your face goes into a hole, which can be uncomfortable!). It turns out the floor mattress is specifically for Thai massages, while oil massages use beds.
Anyway, I definitely prefer the floor mattress style. Those face holes can really hurt your forehead!

After my wonderful session, before heading downstairs, I noticed an empty room. True to my travel blogger duty, I asked for permission from a staff member (who wasn't there initially, but then appeared and even gave me a tour!) and snapped some photos.
This, I was told, was the family room. It even had a private shower inside, which is a great bonus! The wide space on the floor is apparently for children.
"Do kids really get massages here? Don't they dislike it?" I asked.
"They might not like it at first, but once they start, they always ask for more!" the staff member replied with a smile.
Over a cup of tea, I finally got to ask my burning questions. I learned why Thai massage costs a bit more: "It's simply because it's harder work for the staff!" I never would have guessed that reason, haha. While oil massages incur more expenses for disposable underwear, gown laundry, and the oils themselves, the physical exertion for Thai massage therapists is higher, which slightly elevates its price.
