I previously shared my experience of Phu Quoc's rainy season in July,

and so many of you left comments asking, "What about August?"

or "Is September even worse?"

So this time, I've put together a comprehensive guide

for the entire rainy season (July, August, September) all in one go!

I've actually visited Phu Quoc three times: February (dry season),

July (rainy season), and September (rainy season).

Even though July and September are both in the wet season,

the actual feel of the weather was completely different,

so I'll be sharing all the honest details with you today.

Even within the same rainy season, you can see

a difference of over 3 rainy days

and nearly 100mm of rainfall between July and September.

Phu Quoc in July

It's the Rainy Season, but This is Actually Pretty Good?

Since July is just the start of the rainy season,

it rarely rains all day.

Instead, it's characterized by sudden squalls

hitting in the afternoon/evening or early morning.

During my 4-night, 6-day trip,

I did encounter rain on most days,

but it followed a very predictable pattern.

My Actual Weather Experience Pattern:

✅ Morning to Forenoon: Overcast or cloudy, occasional clear patches

✅ Afternoon: Skies suddenly darken, followed by a squall-like heavy downpour

(lasting anywhere from 20 minutes to a few hours)

✅ After the Rain: Humidity actually drops and it cools down,

perfect for waterparks or outdoor activities

I stepped onto rain-soaked ground as soon as I arrived at the airport,

and there were days with a 90% rain forecast—

and honestly, there wasn't a single day the rain spared us

during our Safari tour or Grand World outings.

Still, we fully enjoyed the Sun World Hon Thom Nature Park waterpark,

and even squeezed in a fantastic island-hopping tour!

Honestly, the overcast skies made it so much more comfortable

to walk around and swim compared to the blazing sun!

On the day of our hopping tour, it poured so hard in the morning

that I seriously wondered if we should even go.

But by the afternoon, the sky cleared up like magic,

and we had an absolute blast!

That’s the true charm—and wildcard—of July weather!

No need to cancel your plans just because it's cloudy in the morning.

July Packing & Outfit Tips

✅ Flip-flops are a must! (Soggy sneakers are the absolute worst in the rain)

✅ Breezy, lightweight linen t-shirts or dresses

✅ Bucket hat (perfect shield for both sudden rain and harsh sun)

✅ Light summer cardigan (to save you from freezing AC indoors)

August in Phu Quoc: When the Waves and Wind Pick Up

While I haven't personally visited Phu Quoc in August,

it is widely known as a transitional month where the wind and waves

start picking up noticeably between July and September.

Although the rainfall itself is similar to or slightly less than July,

stronger southwesterly winds mean the west coast (around Long Beach)

can get quite rough, making swimming a bit risky!

Outdoor activities like island hopping tours and the cable car

are often suspended without much notice

due to sudden weather changes during this time of year.

If you're planning an August getaway, I highly recommend

having at least one backup indoor plan ready to go.

✅ Plan your activities around the east or south coast rather than the west coast

✅ Leave a buffer day when booking island hopping tours or the cable car

✅ Pack hair accessories for windy days and water-resistant slides/slippers

September in Phu Quoc: The Real Rainy Season (From My Own Experience)

They say September is the wettest month of the year.

I visited during this time on a 3-night, 5-day package tour,

and let me tell you, the weather was on a whole different level compared to July.

My Real-Life Experience on the Ground

✅ Pouring rain and overcast skies for all 5 days

(It wasn't like July where it clears up in the morning and rains later—

it was just non-stop rain all day long)

✅ It wasn't just quick tropical squalls; it felt like a relentless monsoon season.

Heavy rain literally followed me all the way until I boarded my flight home!

In July, we could at least pop out and play whenever the rain paused,

but in September, if you don't build your itinerary around indoor plans from the start,

your trip can become quite a struggle.

On the bright side, the "Kiss of the Sea" show

still goes on even in the rain,

so make sure to add it to your rainy season itinerary!

hanging out at the resort or exploring local supermarkets.

September Travel Tips

✅ Keep outdoor plans to a minimum; focus on spa days, resort staycations,

and indoor activities

✅ Pack a raincoat instead of an umbrella (strong winds render umbrellas completely useless)

✅ Choose waterproof shoes/slippers and quick-dry clothing

✅ Keep flight delay risks in mind and leave plenty of buffer time for your next schedules

✅ If this is your only window for a summer holiday:

→ July is the most "mild" month of the rainy season.

You can absolutely make it work by utilizing mornings and post-rain breaks!

✅ If ocean activities are your top priority:

→ It's best to avoid August, or at least have robust indoor backup plans ready.

✅ If you're after quiet streets and budget-friendly deals:

→ September is a great choice, but go in with realistic expectations.

We highly recommend pivoting your trip concept to a relaxing resort-centered getaway!

✅ If you want a stress-free trip without worrying about the weather...

→ The dry season (November to April) is definitely your best bet!

Grouping everything under the umbrella term "rainy season"

doesn't do justice to how different these months actually feel.

As someone who has traveled to Phu Quoc three times now,

this is my most honest takeaway.
