No matter where your travels take you, sorting out your currency is often the first thing on the agenda. And for our latest adventure, that meant figuring out the best way to handle money exchange in Phu Quoc.
Typically, travelers would swap a minimal amount at the airport, then seek out local exchange offices or jewelry shops known for better rates. However, Phu Quoc doesn't have a definitive 'go-to' spot for the absolute best rates.
Since I was coming from Ho Chi Minh City, I decided to compare the rates I found there with those in Phu Quoc. Keep in mind there was about a two-day difference between my Ho Chi Minh City exchange and the Phu Quoc rates I'm sharing.

Here's the rate I got at Ha Tam in Ho Chi Minh City: 2,360,000 Vietnamese Dong (VND) per $100 USD.
I would have loved to compare it directly with the Phu Quoc Airport exchange rate, but since I arrived on a domestic flight, I didn't see any exchange counters readily available upon exiting. I did check the international terminal area, and it seemed there might be options inside before you exit immigration.
So, instead, I checked out the exchange rates offered at the Novotel Phu Quoc Resort.

At the Novotel Phu Quoc, the rate was 2,352,000 VND per $100 USD.

Right next door, the Best Western Phu Quoc offered 2,355,000 VND per $100 USD.
While Ho Chi Minh City, and particularly Ha Tam, is often touted for having slightly better exchange rates, the difference wasn't significant enough to warrant a special trip in Phu Quoc. My takeaway? For exchanging money in Phu Quoc, convenience seems to trump chasing the absolute best rate by a tiny margin.
Another excellent option is leveraging a travel debit card. In Vietnam, VP Bank ATMs are known for not charging withdrawal fees, which is a huge bonus!

While there are VP Bank ATMs in both the northern and southern parts of the island, I've listed a central location here. Many establishments in Phu Quoc also accept card payments directly. In my case, I primarily used my travel debit card for direct purchases rather than withdrawing cash.
Therefore, I didn't personally use a VP Bank ATM in Phu Quoc, but I can show you the process from my experience in Ho Chi Minh City. The ATM interface and steps should be identical.

First, select English, enter your PIN (try 4 digits; if that doesn't work, try 4 digits followed by '00'), then choose 'WITHDRAWAL'.

When selecting your account type, anything other than 'CREDIT CARD' should work. I usually opt for 'SAVING ACCOUNT'. You can choose a pre-set amount or select 'OTHER' to enter a custom amount.

And just like that, your cash is successfully withdrawn!
I also noticed that some massage parlors and even the Peaktime Lounge offer currency exchange services.
Ultimately, if you're not planning to exchange a large sum, simply using the exchange service at your accommodation is likely the most hassle-free option. Otherwise, make the most of your travel debit card!
Next time I travel to Phu Quoc with a direct international flight, I'll be sure to compare the airport's exchange rates as well. For now, this wraps up my quick guide on Phu Quoc money exchange!
According to the article, the exchange rate at Ha Tam in Ho Chi Minh City was 2.36 million VND per 100 USD, while at Phu Quoc Novotel Resort, it was 2.352 million VND per 100 USD. Although Ha Tam offers 8,000 VND more, it is noted that the exchange rate difference with accommodations in Phu Quoc is not significant.
When using a Travel Wallet card in Vietnam, VP Bank ATMs do not charge fees. In Phu Quoc, there is a VPBANK PHÚ QUỐC branch located at Số 133 Đường Nguyễn Trung Trực, TT. Dương Đông.
According to the article, currency exchange appears to be available at massage shops and Peak Time Lounge. If you are not exchanging a large sum, exchanging at your accommodation is also a reasonable option.
