Hey there, global explorers! Ongsang here.
If San Diego is on your travel radar,
there's one eatery you absolutely, unequivocally must experience.
And that, my friends, is Phil's BBQ!
Every time I visit San Diego,
it's my absolute go-to spot.
In fact, it's so incredibly delicious that one time,
I even found myself visiting two days in a row!
Normally, I'm a die-hard Korean food fanatic,
and rarely revisit American cuisine after a single taste,
but Phil's BBQ is the glorious exception!
If you're mapping out your San Diego adventure,
I wholeheartedly recommend carving out a spot for it in your itinerary!
Phil's BBQ Main Branch: Location & Parking Tips!
The branch I frequently visit is
the original main branch, nestled right in the heart of San Diego.
Address
3750 Sports Arena Blvd
San Diego, CA 92110
📍 Phil's BBQ
3750 Sports Arena Blvd, San Diego, CA 92110 USA
Opening Hours
11:00 AM ~ 10:00 PM
Parking
Free
Spacious parking lot
Phil's BBQ boasts a pretty spacious parking lot,
so even after numerous visits, I've never experienced any inconvenience due to parking.
That said, during peak dinner hours,
it can get quite busy, so I'd suggest arriving a little earlier
to beat the rush.
With free parking, it's a fantastic spot for travelers exploring by rental car to visit without any hassle.
Don't Let the Line Fool You: It Moves Faster Than You Think!

Phil's BBQ is a legendary spot in San Diego,
so it's always buzzing with people.
When you first see the line, it might stretch so far you'll wonder, "Will I even get to eat today?"
but here's the secret: the turnover rate is surprisingly quick, so you often find yourself inside much faster than you'd expect.
If your schedule allows, I highly recommend aiming for times just outside the usual lunch and dinner rush.
I once arrived during dinner and
waited for over an hour, which is why I now make it a point to avoid peak hours at all costs.
Want to Skip the Wait? Full Service is Your Secret Weapon!
Phil's BBQ traditionally operates on a
self-service model: you place your order and then pick up your delicious meal yourself.
This also means the pressure to tip is generally lower than at a traditional restaurant.
However, if the self-service line gets exceptionally long, a staff member might approach you and ask if you'd prefer full service.
Opting for full service means you get to sit down and order just like in a regular restaurant, with your food brought directly to your table.
And because most people are queuing for self-service, you'll likely skip the wait entirely!
Of course, you'll then pay a tip just like you would at any full-service restaurant.
If time is of the essence during your travels, I think it's a perfectly reasonable and worthwhile choice!

Look for the entrance, then turn left, and you'll spot a separate door.
If you see a bar area like this, complete with servers, you've found the full-service section!
Ordering Made Easy, Even for First-Timers!
If it's your very first time stepping into Phil's BBQ,
the ordering system might feel a little unfamiliar at first.

The line on the left is for dining in,
and the line on the right is for takeout orders.

Once you've placed your order, you'll get a pager,
and then you're free to grab a seat wherever you like and wait for your food.

When your pager buzzes, head over to pick up your food!
Right opposite the food pickup counter, you'll find everything you need:
forks, knives, plates, wet wipes, to-go boxes, and even bags are all conveniently laid out.
Feel free to pack up any delicious leftovers to enjoy later.

Sauces are readily available at every table,
and there's even a dedicated hand-washing station conveniently located by the wall.
Our Top Picks at Phil's BBQ!

If it's your first time here,
I wholeheartedly recommend
the Baby Back Ribs Dinner.
You can choose between a Quarter, Half, or Full rack depending on your party size.
For two people, a Half rack is usually plenty.

This is a Quarter, which comes with four ribs.

This photo shows a Quarter pork back ribs with a large coleslaw,
and french fries ordered separately.
For sides, I highly recommend the combination of coleslaw and
french fries.

If you think you might need a little extra,
don't hesitate to order some cornbread on the side!
Phil's BBQ,
You absolutely HAVE to try this menu item!

While many folks focus solely on the ribs,
I absolutely have to recommend the chicken wings as well.
Normally, I'm not a big chicken eater.
Even when my friends are ordering chicken every week,
I'll typically only have it once every few months, if at all.
However, Phil's BBQ chicken wings? I order them every single time I visit.
They boast an incredibly rich smoky flavor,
with a perfectly crispy skin and juicy, tender meat inside.
Honestly, they're just as satisfying as the ribs for me!
Consider them a truly hidden gem on the menu.
Don't Forget to Pair it with a Beer!

When it comes to barbecue,
a refreshing, cold beer is an absolute must!
The draft beer at Phil's BBQ is so incredibly refreshing that it
pairs perfectly with the ribs.
If you're a beer lover, definitely order one with your meal!

Ribs are Best Eaten with Your Hands!

While knives and forks are available for the ribs,
I highly recommend picking them up and eating them with your hands.
The meat practically falls off the bone, making it so easy to eat, and honestly,
eating with your hands is the only way to truly experience the magic of BBQ! Haha!

After you're done, there's a convenient hand-washing station by the wall,
so you can truly indulge without a care in the world.
It's clear why Americans embrace eating ribs by hand!
The Price Was Also Surprisingly Good!
Considering the cost of living in the US, Phil's BBQ offers
excellent value for money.
Even after two of us ate until we were absolutely stuffed,
our bill didn't even hit $100.
And true to American style, the portions were incredibly generous,
leaving us completely satisfied.
Missed Out in San Diego? No Worries!
If you happened to be in San Diego and couldn't make it,
maybe because it was too crowded,
or if your travel plans take you between LA and San Diego,
I highly recommend checking out the Temecula branch.
Address:
40830 Winchester Rd
Temecula, CA 92591
📍 Phil's BBQ
40830 Winchester Rd, Temecula, CA 92591 USA
This location generally has
shorter wait times, allowing for a more relaxed dining experience.
Sadly, for those in Los Angeles,
there's no Phil's BBQ location there ㅠㅠ
Ongsang's Overall Verdict
If someone asked me to recommend just ONE must-try restaurant in San Diego,
I wouldn't hesitate for a second
to recommend Phil's BBQ.
From the ribs to the chicken wings, the refreshing beer, and the incredibly generous portions,
everything about this place was absolutely satisfying.
If you're planning a trip to San Diego,
I wholeheartedly recommend you pay them a visit!
The main branch operates from 11 AM to 10 PM. The parking lot is spacious and free, but it can get crowded during dinner hours, so it's recommended to arrive with ample time.
Phil's BBQ is always busy, so the line might look long, but the turnover rate is high, meaning you often get in much quicker than expected. We recommend visiting outside of lunch and dinner peak times.
Full service is like a regular restaurant where you sit down, place your order, and a staff member brings your food. Unlike the self-service line, you can use it without waiting, but you are expected to pay a tip, just like at any standard restaurant.
If it's your first visit, we recommend ordering the Half size of the Baby Back Ribs Dinner for two people to share. For sides, the combination of coleslaw and french fries is excellent, and we also suggest the hidden gem, chicken wings.
