When you're planning a trip to San Diego,
one place that inevitably pops up is
San Diego's Old Town.
This was actually my second time visiting
San Diego Old Town.
My first visit was a quick day trip by train,
but this time, I took my sweet time,
enjoying a meal and even catching a performance!
And you know what? It's still as charming as ever.
Even though you're in the United States,
the streets and atmosphere make you feel like you've stepped into Mexico,
complete with delicious Mexican food
and music drifting from every corner.
It was easily the most exotic and culturally rich experience
I had during my San Diego trip.
I visited around 2 PM on a long holiday weekend, specifically during the 4th of July festivities,
and as expected, it was bustling with people.
Despite the crowds,
it quickly became clear why Old Town is often called
'a must-visit destination in San Diego.'
What is San Diego Old Town State Historic Park?
San Diego Old Town State Historic Park is a unique historical area
that preserves the look and feel of California's earliest settlements.
It's famous for retaining its 1800s Mexican-era buildings and atmosphere,
where American history and Mexican culture blend seamlessly.
Admission to the park is free,
and you can explore the grounds freely at any time.
The Visitor Center and most museums typically operate
from 10 AM to 5 PM, but many shops and restaurants
stay open later into the evening.
However, opening hours can vary slightly between establishments,
so it's a good idea to check before you go!
I recommend setting aside at least 2-3 hours for your visit.
If you take your time browsing the shops and museums,
you could easily spend half a day here without even realizing it.
Stepping into Mexico from the Entrance
As soon as I arrived in Old Town,
the first things that caught my eye were
the wall emblazoned with 'Old Town' and the towering cacti.
I haven't been to Mexico yet, but the atmosphere immediately
reminded me of the vibrant scenes from the movie 'Coco.'
For a moment, it didn't feel like I was traveling in the US at all;
it felt like I'd just arrived in a charming little Mexican village!
It's incredibly photogenic, and I spent quite a while
snapping pictures right at the entrance.
A Delightful Stroll Through the Streets
Once you step further into Old Town,
you'll find a continuous stretch of colorful buildings
and quaint shops.
Everywhere you look is a photo opportunity, and the distinct colors
of Mexico are so alive that you'll constantly want to pull out your camera.
San Diego is a major city on the US West Coast,
but in Old Town, you'll feel a stronger sense of Mexico than America!
It's truly a two-for-one experience!
That's why I highly recommend visiting if you're planning a trip to San Diego!
My Favorite Spot:
Fiesta de Reyes
The place where I spent the most time was
Fiesta de Reyes Plaza.
There was a performance happening, and the live music
and the general vibe of the crowd were so wonderful
that I ended up sitting and watching for much longer than planned.
When you travel, it's easy to get caught up in sticking to your itinerary,
but this was a place where I just wanted to sit back, watch the show,
and simply relax without a care in the world.
If you visit Old Town, I highly recommend finding a spot
and enjoying a performance, even if just for a little while!
Don't Miss the Free Museums!
I thought it was a set, but it was actually a hotel that operated in the past
Old Town is home to several
historical museums that offer free admission.
While they aren't massive in scale,
they beautifully showcase the daily life and interiors of buildings
from that historical period.
Some places might charge a fee, but there are plenty of free museums,
so don't hesitate to pop into a few
and take a casual look around!
Souvenir Shops: A Treasure Trove of Fun
There's also an incredible number of souvenir shops.
I was particularly impressed by the handcrafted items
and decorations that looked like they were made directly by Mexican artisans.
While I didn't purchase anything this time,
just browsing was entertaining enough.
The vibrant colors made it a feast for the eyes
the entire time I was exploring.
Indulge in Authentic Mexican Cuisine
Old Town boasts an abundance of Mexican restaurants.
I enjoyed a meal here myself, and it truly enhanced
the travel atmosphere.

The ambiance and the food were both highly satisfying,
so I definitely recommend enjoying a Mexican meal
with a refreshing beer.
Tips for Visiting Old Town San Diego
First, I recommend allowing at least 3 hours for your visit.
I had visited once before on a train trip, and even on this second visit,
where I spent about 2 hours dining and exploring, it felt like time flew by too quickly.
If it's your first time, it's best to plan for 3 hours or more
to leisurely browse the shops and museums!
Second, there's free parking available!
I utilized the free parking, and I'll detail all the parking information
in an upcoming post.
Third, if you're visiting LA, consider a day trip to San Diego!
Old Town's train station is right nearby, making it super convenient
to visit by train.
I've personally taken a day trip by train before,
and the journey was surprisingly comfortable,
making it an easy and enjoyable way to travel.

San Diego boasts many beautiful beaches, but Old Town
offers a completely different kind of charm.
The most impressive aspect was being able to experience such rich Mexican culture
within the United States, and simply walking around made me feel fully immersed in the travel spirit.

love Mexican food,
or want to experience San Diego's history and culture,
I highly recommend paying a visit!
