Yantai's Penglai Pavilion 2026: Tickets, Map, & Getting There

If you could only pick one historical attraction during your Yantai trip, I highly recommend Penglai Pavilion!!

Penglai Pavilion is recognized as one of the Four Great Towers of China, alongside Yellow Crane Tower, Yueyang Tower, and Pavilion of Prince Teng. It's a real ancient architectural marvel intertwined with the legend of Qin Shi Huang's elixir of immortality and the story of the Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea.

The area itself is quite vast, so we stayed for over 3 hours. It's also located in the opposite direction from the city center if you're coming from the airport, so make sure to plan your travel route carefully.

1. Yantai Penglai Pavilion

Penglai Pavilion is not an artificially created tourist attraction; it's a genuine historical site built in 1061, during the fourth year of Xining in the Northern Song Dynasty.

Over the Ming and Qing dynasties, it underwent continuous repairs and expansions, and today it is recognized as a China National 5A-rated Tourist Attraction and an important cultural relic managed at the national level.

This Penglai region, in particular, is connected to the tales of Qin Shi Huang and Emperor Wu of Han, who sent people to the eastern seas in search of immortality.

It's also famous as the backdrop for the legend of the Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea, where the eight Taoist immortals are said to have traversed the ocean. Perhaps that's why we could see various artifacts and murals related to the legend inside.

While Baxianguohai (Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea) and Sanxian Mountain are also National 5A-rated tourist attractions in the Yantai Penglai region, Penglai Pavilion holds unique historical significance as an ancient architectural masterpiece.

The other two places are man-made.

We only had time for Penglai Pavilion, but it definitely had a different atmosphere compared to the artificial tourist sites we'd visited before.

We knew it was quite extensive, but Penglai Pavilion was even larger than we expected!

There was even a shuttle bus from the entrance to the main Penglai Pavilion buildings, and I recall the cost was around 10 Chinese Yuan.

We opted to walk, taking our time to enjoy the surrounding scenery and snap some photos. With stops along the way, it took us almost an hour.

If you're short on time or traveling with elderly parents, taking the shuttle is a good idea. But if you love a leisurely stroll, walking is definitely a wonderful option too!

As we approached Penglai Pavilion, we found these indoor buildings that housed several restaurants where you could grab a meal, and plenty of souvenir shops.

Unlike typical tourist souvenir shops, these places had genuine local specialties and handmade crafts, which made browsing really fun!

In particular, at the shop selling blue-dyed souvenirs on the right, I seriously debated whether to buy a piece of clothing!

Yantai is known for its apples, so naturally, there was a Pingguo (Apple) shop with plenty of apple-themed merchandise!

From the gate-like entrance visible in the left photo, it's quite a climb up a hill to Penglai Pavilion, which can be a bit challenging. However, the distance isn't too far, and we reached it in about 10 minutes.

It was August, so I was drenched in sweat, but when I stepped out onto the pavilion, the sea breeze was incredibly strong and truly refreshing.

The sea view beyond the city walls was absolutely beautiful, and seeing how high and sturdily it was built, I thought, 'No wonder this was such a crucial military stronghold!'

Peeking my head through the city walls and gazing at the landscape and cliffs, I fully understood why it received the highest rating among national tourist attractions.

It was also fascinating to see many Chinese tourists visiting on guided tours.

Penglai Pavilion and the lighthouse, which looked amazing from above, were equally magnificent and grand when viewed from below, set against the sea and mountains!

Although the heat made it a bit challenging, Penglai Pavilion was incredibly satisfying because it's a unique destination you won't find anywhere else, much like visiting the Great Wall in Beijing.

After traveling through China multiple times, I sometimes feel like many places are decorated similarly, but Penglai Pavilion definitely stands out with its unique and tangible historical significance.

2. Gaode Map, Location, and How to Get There

Penglai Pavilion isn't a tourist spot close to Yantai city center.

In particular, it's located on the opposite side of the city from Yantai Airport, so it takes about an hour and a half by car to get there from the city center.

It's more efficient to include it in your itinerary on your first day upon arrival at Yantai Airport or on your last day before departing.

The Penglai Pavilion scenic area is vast, so if you simply search for 'Penglai Pavilion' on Gaode Map, you might end up at an entrance-restricted area.

To go directly to the ticket office where you check your admission tickets, you should pin the Gaode Map location below and head there.

On our first day of the trip, we took a Didi (ride-hailing service) and traveled in the order of Yantai Airport → Wancheng Fortress → Penglai Pavilion.

The combined taxi fare for those two rides was about 94 CNY, so if you go directly from the airport to Penglai Pavilion, it would likely be cheaper than that.

3. Admission Fee and Price

💸 Penglai Pavilion Admission Fee: 100 CNY

At the current exchange rate, it's roughly ~$15, which might seem a bit pricey, but considering its scale and historical value, it's definitely worth visiting.

Tickets can be purchased at the on-site ticket office or through travel websites like Trip.com.

While comparing prices, there's barely any difference (~$0) between Trip.com and on-site tickets, but we bought ours in advance.

Since it's a popular tourist destination even within China, you could lose a lot of time waiting in line at the ticket office if you purchase on-site, so I highly recommend buying your tickets online and simply scanning the QR code at the turnstile for entry.

4. Luggage Storage

Considering Penglai Pavilion's location, you might find yourself carrying luggage if you've planned your itinerary to pass through. Fortunately, you can check large and heavy bags at the luggage storage facility.

To the right of the Penglai Pavilion ticket office/turnstile, we paid 20 CNY at the counter of the souvenir shop to store two suitcases and a duffel bag.

When you check your bags, they give you a claim tag, like a numbered keyring. You simply return to the souvenir shop, show your number, and get your luggage back.

If you use the luggage storage, you must pick up your bags by 5:30 PM.
