When you visit Otaru, indulging in fresh sushi or a vibrant kaisendon (seafood bowl) is practically a rite of passage. As a bustling port city, Otaru boasts an incredible array of eateries along its famous Sushi Street, each serving up exceptionally fresh seafood.
Today, I'm excited to share my experience at Sushidokoro Saika, a spot particularly popular among locals that truly impressed me.

Reservations & Waiting

You can easily make reservations through Google Maps, but we opted for an open-run (arriving right before opening).
We got there about 20 minutes before they opened and were surprised to find no one else waiting until we were seated! I initially wondered if the wait was only for dinner.
However, a local Japanese diner who came in after us remarked, "It's surprisingly empty today, how strange!" which confirmed our good luck.

Online reviews and waiting lists suggest that lunch peak hours can get quite busy. So, I highly recommend making a reservation in advance or planning an early open-run to secure your spot!
Inside the Restaurant

The interior of the restaurant was surprisingly spacious with plenty of seating options. You'll find everything from counter seats (perfect for solo diners or couples) to two-person tables and even private rooms for a more intimate experience.

As soon as we were seated, we were graciously provided with warm hand towels and a soothing cup of green tea – a lovely touch.

One of the best parts about sitting at the counter is getting to watch the sushi chefs in action! It's mesmerizing to witness the skill of these artisans, just like something out of an anime.
All the seafood ingredients looked incredibly fresh and vibrant, promising an exquisite meal.
Menu Highlights

The star attractions on the menu are, of course, kaisendon and sushi! We ordered the Renge Kaisendon, Nadeshiko Sushi, Zangi fried chicken, and a Sapporo Perfect Classic Beer.
Overall, the menu items are on the pricier side, and I've heard the prices have increased recently.

Despite the higher price point, there was one specific reason we chose Sushidokoro Saika: to try the Sapporo The Perfect Classic Beer!
Unlike regular classic beers, this special brew is only available at a select few establishments chosen by the Sapporo company. This means strict quality control and a guaranteed premium experience.
I'm not usually a huge fan of beer due to its typical bitterness and aftertaste, but this one was incredibly clean and delicious, with absolutely no bitterness. Highly recommended!
Kaisendon & Sushi Perfection

At about ~$26 (4,200 JPY), the Renge Kaisendon might seem pricey, but it's generously packed with incredibly fresh seafood.
It featured a diverse selection including salmon, tuna, shrimp, uni (sea urchin), scallops, squid, and sea urchin roe. There was absolutely no hint of fishiness, and honestly, it was the best seafood dish I've ever had!

The accompanying miso soup perfectly balanced the flavors. If you love seafood, you won't regret it! Even though I don't typically seek out seafood dishes, I thoroughly enjoyed this meal. The tuna, in particular, was life-changing.

The Nadeshiko Sushi platter featured the same high-quality ingredients as the kaisendon, simply presented as individual sushi pieces.
The fish slices were perfectly thick, and the rice-to-fish ratio was excellent. Priced the same as the kaisendon, you can choose based on your preference – I found the sushi a bit easier to eat.

We also ordered Zangi, a Japanese-style fried chicken that was wonderfully crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside.
It was seasoned just right and tasted great, but it was quite filling. Next time, I might skip it to save room for more sushi!
If you're looking for an authentic, local sushi and kaisendon experience during your Otaru trip, I highly recommend Sushidokoro Saika. While the prices are a bit steep, it was truly a life-changing seafood meal!
