✅ 3-star Ryokan / Open-air Hot Spring / Near Otaru Station
During my Hokkaido trip last January,
I spent a night in Otaru 🏩

Beyond Sakaimachi Street,
I absolutely loved exploring Otaru's snowy alleyways, train tracks,
and shrines at a leisurely pace..💗
And today, I'm excited to introduce a ryokan-style hotel that I was incredibly satisfied with
and that offers amazing value for money!

01. Hotel Introduction
🏩 Otaru Furukawa Hotel

🏩 Otaru Furukawa Hotel
Located right in front of the Otaru Canal,
it's perfect for sightseeing in Otaru.
With Japanese-style rooms and even an open-air hot spring,
it's the ideal spot to truly experience winter and relax in Otaru ♨️

📍 Location
- 1 1 Chome-2-15 Ironai, Otaru, Hokkaido 047-0031 Japan
- Approximately 13 minutes walk from Otaru Station
- Its location near Otaru Station is a big plus, as it means you don't have to travel far
even though it's a ryokan!
While 13 minutes isn't exactly 'right next door',
it's not an overwhelmingly long distance either,
so I walked to the hotel every time!

This place is located right in front of the Otaru Canal!
Having the accommodation right by the canal means
you can avoid the crowds
and enjoy the canal, even snapping some solo photos,
which is a huge locational advantage of this hotel!
(See? No one else around!
When it started snowing, I rushed out to see it!)
📌 Pricing Information
Honestly, my biggest dream for my first winter trip to Sapporo
was to enjoy an open-air hot spring!
But all the ryokans in places like Jozankei were just so expensive?!!
So, after a frantic search, I found a hotel in Otaru, where I was planning to travel,
that offered a hot spring ryokan experience at a reasonable price with great reviews,
and I booked it right away!
As of September,
you can enjoy a winter high-season stay starting from around ~$180

Prices can climb to a minimum of around ~$438 later on,
so I highly recommend booking a place with free cancellation in advance!
(Keep in mind that unless there's a special promotion,
winter accommodations in Hokkaido are currently at their lowest prices!)

Even though my stay was in January, I booked in advance in September,
and it was ~$204 for one night during peak season.
~$204, and breakfast was included too!
I really think ~$204 was a great deal!

📌 Check-in • Check-out
Check-in time | From 3 PM
Check-out time | Until 12 PM
Luggage storage is also available,
so if you arrive early, you can leave your bags
and enjoy sightseeing.
02 Room Review / Stay Experience
The rooms come in Japanese style and standard Western style,
as well as a mixed style combining both.
And for your information, there are also rooms with canal views!
Among them, I chose the most basic Japanese style
City View Room 💗

Perhaps because it's a Japanese-style room,
it had a distinct ryokan atmosphere,
different from a typical hotel.

And personally, I really loved the kotatsu...🤭
After walking around in the snow outside,
coming back to the accommodation and sitting in the warm kotatsu
was a joy in itself.
In the evening, I even ate oden while sitting in the kotatsu,
and that remains a surprisingly wonderful memory...🖤

When I returned in the evening, they had prepared the bedding like this!
I always sleep in a bed, so I kept wondering if I should choose a bedded room,
but I slept like a baby!
✅ If you find this uncomfortable, we recommend booking a standard room.
03. Facilities • Breakfast

📌 Public Bath + Open-air Onsen
And the biggest reason I chose this accommodation!
💗It was the open-air onsen.💗
That's when I truly discovered the charm of open-air onsens...💛

📌 Notes for Onsen Use
- Hours of Operation: 3:00 PM~12:00 AM / 4:00 AM~11:00 AM
- Operated on a rotating male/female schedule on the 1st floor / 2nd floor
(When I visited, the 1st floor during the day was for women!)
This place, depending on the time of day,
The 1st and 2nd-floor baths for men and women alternate.
Based on my experience,
I preferred the first-floor bath!
What made it extra special was that
it was snowing heavily the day I visited.
Sitting in the warm open-air bath while snowflakes drifted down,
I truly felt like I was experiencing a quintessential Japanese winter trip!

After your refreshing soak, I highly recommend
treating yourself to a cute jelly and a yogurt drink to round off the experience!

📌 Lounge (1st Floor)
The accommodation also boasts a lounge area
where you can enjoy drinks and spirits.
(When I was there, they had Kavalan, wine, sake, and more!)
It was wonderful to relax in the lounge after my onsen bath,
spending some leisurely time.
If you're someone who values relaxing and enjoying the onsen at your accommodation
more than just tirelessly touring all the sights,
then these amenities will definitely enhance your stay.

In addition, the 1st floor also features a souvenir shop
and beautifully decorated spaces to explore and enjoy!
And make sure to say hello to the adorable dog you might spot!🐶

📌 Breakfast
Otaru Furukawa Hotel operates as a ryokan-style accommodation,
with its standard plan including breakfast as part of the overnight stay!
The buffet features a diverse spread utilizing Hokkaido-sourced ingredients,
from traditional Japanese dishes like grilled fish and various side dishes
to freshly baked breads, including croissants!
I especially loved being able to enjoy a leisurely breakfast
while gazing out at the picturesque Otaru Canal!
