Spotless Japanese Home-Style Breakfast
Lingering, Reluctant to Leave
I usually travel solo, but when it comes to Japan, I often go with a friend. That's because she absolutely adores Japan (I swear 90% of her trips are to Japan!). So, we ended up in Sapporo together. (We've been to Hokkaido three times, and explored Fukuoka, Yufuin, Osaka, and Okinawa – pretty much everywhere but Tokyo).
I'm the type to book my accommodation last-minute, sometimes even on the way to the airport, while she's the one nagging me to plan months in advance. So, when we travel together, she usually handles the reservations.
And, more often than not, I'm not entirely thrilled with her choices, haha. It's not about the quality of the place itself, as I'm not particular about where I sleep. My main gripe is usually, "Why did she pick this location?" They're rarely popular with international travelers (so I can't even write a blog post about them!), and they often lack good access to downtown or local spots (meaning there's nothing around, and it's a hassle to get anywhere, often outside of transportation passes). Still, she put in the effort, so I don't openly complain, but I always silently vow to book the next trip myself!

Then, one time, out of all the places my friend booked, there was one I actually really liked (finally, a win!). And that's the spot I'm excited to share with you today.

Honestly, this isn't exactly an Otaru hotel; it's more of a guesthouse or hostel. If we were rating it as a hotel, it would probably be a 1-star, maybe even less. Yet, what truly won me over was its unique atmosphere. You can genuinely feel the authentic Japanese charm here.

There's an adorable, compact kitchen,

And cute little doggies and kitties in diapers,

Everywhere you look in this Otaru guesthouse, there's a charming, old-world vibe.

There's even an outdoor space, but it was raining during my visit, so I couldn't use it, unfortunately.

Though I couldn't read them, the shelves were packed with manga. I didn't get to ask the owner of this Otaru guesthouse, but I bet he loved (and still loves) comic books when he was a kid.

Since the rooms aren't the main focus of this particular guesthouse, I'll keep this brief:
The guest rooms are set up with dorm-style beds, accommodating about four people per room. Towels are provided, but other amenities need to be purchased separately. The showers and restrooms are shared, as is typical for a guesthouse.

This part truly moved me. It's a world apart from a standard hotel breakfast. The ambiance and the feeling of sitting around with fellow guests and the owner, sharing a meal (even for an extreme introvert like me!), really make the trip feel more special and authentic.

And the lady who prepares breakfast speaks a few words of Korean, but her accent is absolutely perfect. She says, "Saengmaek du jan-iyo~" (Two draft beers, please!) and "Gamsahamnida~" (Thank you!). Her tone is exactly like a native Korean speaker's. It's that slight upward lilt and elongation at the end, and she pronounces the final consonants perfectly, not "gamsahamnida" but a clear, emphasized "gamsahamnida"! It was quite impressive.

I was so sad to check out that I just lingered in the common lobby area, pretending to work on my blog. I even put on the movie 'Love Letter' to prolong the cozy atmosphere.

And enjoyed a cup of coffee. (Coffee, cookies, and beer are available for self-service and self-payment.)
I personally loved the ambiance of this Otaru guesthouse, and if you're planning an overnight stay rather than just a day trip, I definitely recommend checking it out.
