Sapporo Shakotan & Otaru Day Trip 2026: Misaki no Yu Onsen Tour
Explore Hokkaido's stunning Shakotan Peninsula and charming Otaru on a convenient day trip from Sapporo. Discover hidden coastal gems and relax at Misaki no Yu Onsen.

Hello, I'm travel influencer Seulseuring!
When you travel to Sapporo, Otaru is a popular destination, isn't it?
I initially considered visiting Otaru too,
but this time, I wanted to experience a different side of Hokkaido!

That's when Shakotan caught my eye.
The blue sea I saw in pictures looked absolutely stunning,
but upon looking into it, I found that Cape Kamui and
Shimamui Coast are quite far apart,
and to visit both from Sapporo in one day,
I'd have to plan the travel route very carefully...
So, this time, I decided to try a day tour from Sapporo to
Shakotan!
Ultimately, rather than just ticking off many tourist spots,
it felt more like a day where I truly immersed myself in
Hokkaido's nature and experienced it deeply~
I'll introduce the Sapporo-starting Shakotan and Otaru tour
below!!
Sapporo Shakotan Otaru Day Tour |
1. Shakotan / Otaru Locations |
2. Tour Course Itinerary |
3. Tour Comparison |
4. Tour Pros and Cons |
I'll be introducing the day tour from Sapporo to Shakotan and Otaru
in the order listed above~!!
1. Shakotan / Otaru Locations
📍 Sapporo City
Sapporo City, Hokkaido, Japan
📍 Cape Kamui
Cape Kamui, Gozaki-cho, 〒046-0321, Japan
📍 Shimamui Coast
Irikacho, Shakotan-cho, Shakotan District, Hokkaido 〒046-0327, Japan
📍 Misaki no Yu Onsen
212-1 Nozukachō, Shakotan, Shakotan District, Hokkaido 046-0325, Japan
📍 Otaru City
Otaru City, Hokkaido, Japan
The course I took
started in Sapporo in the morning and
traveled to Cape Kamui.
With a total travel distance of approximately 216 km,
it was quite a long day~
Even so, while sitting in the car and traveling,
watching the Hokkaido coastal scenery change outside the window
was a delightful experience.
2. Tour Course Itinerary
Cape Kamui |
Misaki no Yu Onsen |
Shimamui Coast |
Otaru Canal |
While courses combining Sapporo and Shakotan
may vary slightly between tours,
typically, they visit the four places listed above.
Cape Kamui, Shimamui Coast, and Otaru Canal
are usually included, with Misaki no Yu Onsen being an optional stop.

Misaki no Yu Onsen is one of the most magnificent and beautiful onsens I've ever visited,
so I chose a tour that included a bath there.

Cape Kamui was what I was most looking forward to.
Even in pictures, I thought the colors were beautiful,
but because the weather in this region can be quite unpredictable,
it was cloudy on the day I visited.
Nevertheless, seeing it in person,
the panoramic view of the open sea and cliffs together
was far more impressive.
Just a heads-up, there's a walking path here,
so it's best to wear comfortable shoes!
However, because the tour has a set amount of time
to spend at each location,
if you prefer to walk slowly and linger longer at your destinations,
you might find the time a bit limited~

Misaki no Yu Onsen was better than I expected!
Since photography isn't allowed inside the onsen,
I'm using a picture from their official website~!
It was cloudy, but by the time I arrived at the onsen, the sky had cleared,
so I was able to enjoy the hot spring bath with that exact view~
Personally, I loved that this spot was
included in the middle of the itinerary.

Especially being able to enjoy the onsen
while gazing out at the sea was...
It was quite different from your run-of-the-mill sightseeing tour.
It truly felt like a perfect pit stop in the middle of our journey,
making it super memorable 🌟🌟🌟
Just a heads-up: towels aren't provided as standard,
so you'll need to bring your own or rent one locally!

If our itinerary had been all about constantly hopping between observatories and tourist spots,
I'd have been pretty wiped out by the afternoon.
But here, we got to relax, enjoy lunch, and even soak in a hot spring –
it was such a refreshing break!

What's more, there's nothing quite like a cold milk after a relaxing hot spring bath –
it's absolutely divine!!!
Make sure to treat yourself to some milk after your soak~

We visited Shimamui Coast, but unfortunately, thick sea fog rolled in, so we couldn't get a proper view.
Tours in the Shakotan region are fantastic for immersing yourself in nature,
but it's really important to remember that they're very weather-dependent.
Knowing this beforehand will help you manage expectations and avoid any disappointment!

We also stopped by the Otaru Canal,
but keep in mind that the goal of this tour is different from one solely focused on Otaru!
It's important not to think of it as a 'Sapporo tour that combines Otaru and Shakotan sightseeing.'
While Otaru Station might be a drop-off point,
it's more accurate to consider this tour primarily as an experience designed to let you spend a full day exploring the stunning natural landscapes of Shakotan!!

Since Misakinoyu Onsen was my main destination,
I specifically sought out a Shakotan tour that included a rejuvenating hot spring bath!

4. Tour Pros & Cons

So, what are the pros and cons?
Having experienced it firsthand, the advantages were crystal clear.
You can combine Cape Kamui, Shimamui Coast, and a relaxing hot spring
into one unforgettable day trip!
On the flip side, the drawbacks are also apparent:
The travel time is quite long,
and your stay at each attraction is fixed!

Since it's roughly a 10-hour itinerary,
it might be tiring if you prefer a more relaxed pace,
and if the weather isn't cooperative,
the satisfaction of the ocean views might vary.
That's why, instead of recommending this tour to everyone,
“I want to experience nature for a day while in Sapporo”
“I want to see Shakotan but don't want to bother with complicated planning”
“I want to see both Cape Kamui and Shimamui Coast in one go”
I believe it's a perfect fit for travelers like these.

After experiencing Shakotan myself this time, it felt like more than just
‘adding another Sapporo-area attraction’ to my itinerary!
It was a day spent escaping the city, gazing at the ocean, walking along the coast,
relaxing in a hot spring, and driving along scenic coastal roads again~
So, for me, someone who wanted to experience a different side of Hokkaido than Otaru,
it was a truly satisfying itinerary!
If you're like me and want to dedicate a day of your Sapporo trip to nature,
you might want to compare Shakotan day tours.
Please note that depending on your departure date,
the operating period and itinerary may vary.
Before booking, make sure to check the availability for your chosen date and
🔻carefully review what's included!🔻
