The one dish I hadn't managed to try on this trip was 'Hamburg steak'.
Before even arriving, I vowed to try this 100-year-old Hamburg steak
no matter what!
So, while exploring the Umeda area,
we made our way to the 12th floor of Hankyu Department Store,
home to Grill Capital Toyotei Hankyu Branch.

After checking out of our accommodation,
we arrived leisurely around 11 AM,
only to find it absolutely packed! Is this real life?! 😱
Right in front of the restaurant, a large poster proudly declaring its 100-year history
was hanging prominently,
only adding to our anticipation.

We got waiting number 37,
and because the wait was so long, this photo I snapped of it
would later help us solve a huge crisis... 😅 (Coming soon...)
How We Maximized Our Waiting Time & The Sweaty-Palm Story!
After being informed of a minimum 1-hour wait,
we couldn't just sit around, so we immediately
headed down to the Hankyu Department Store's basement food hall!

Japanese department store basements are truly
a visual feast, a dessert paradise, aren't they?
When we visited in May, the stalls were brimming with luscious melons and
strawberry desserts,
making for some seriously delightful window shopping.

Luckily, we weren't ravenously hungry at that moment,
and managed to resist the temptation. Otherwise, we might have ended up
buying an instant hamburg steak right there in the basement, LOL!

After an hour of delightful browsing,
we headed back upstairs and found
our turn was already third in line!
Talk about perfect timing!
But then, a major crisis hit... 🔥
Our waiting slip was gone?!
While excitedly exploring the basement food hall,
it must have slipped out of my pocket! 😭
For a moment, my mind went completely blank,
but then I remembered the photo I'd taken earlier of the waiting ticket, almost as a joke because the wait was so long!
It was a lifesaver!
I quickly explained the situation to the staff member,
and after showing them the picture, they were incredibly kind and helpful,
confirming our number and guiding us inside!
I was truly so grateful to them!
Otherwise, my hungry partner, Yappu, might have
torn off my arm out of starvation! 🤣
🏠 Inside Atmosphere & Ordering Tips

Stepping inside, still catching our breath from the little scare, the interior was
It was a typical Japanese restaurant style.
The well-partitioned space gave it a
serene kissaten vibe,
making it perfect for a comfortable and private meal!

With a full Korean menu available,
ordering was a breeze!
The **lunch sets are divided into three types**,
**depending on whether they include dessert and other options**.
We ordered the signature
Toyo-tei Hamburg Steak Lunch Set A and
the Japanese-style Hamburg Steak a la carte.
✅ Lunch Set A Composition
Appetizer (Tomato Salad) + Main Hamburg
+ Rice or Bread (Rice/Bread refillable!)

While waiting for our food,
we carefully observed how the locals ate,
and cleverly learned the proper way to enjoy it!

1. 100-Year Toyo-tei Hamburg Steak (Lunch Set A / 1,860엔)
Yappu ordered, and the appetizer for Set A,
the tomato salad, came out first.

It was cold and refreshing,
with a sweet and sour sauce that perfectly complemented it,
making it the best appetizer to whet your appetite!🍅

Next came the main dish!
It's served wrapped tightly in foil,
and after piercing the center with a fork to release the steam,
and carefully cutting away the foil,
a warm hamburg steak appears!

It comes with a **golden buttered potato as a garnish** and
fresh vegetables.
The hamburg steak itself was incredibly moist,
and the **demi-glace sauce had deeply permeated it.**

However, perhaps because I had such high expectations,
I personally didn't feel that 'wow, this is truly unique!' specialness,
which left me feeling a little bit disappointed.
2. Japanese-Style Hamburg Steak (A La Carte / 1,560엔)

The Japanese-style hamburg steak I chose
didn't differ much in price from the original,
but its appearance was quite distinct!

Served with grated daikon radish, it came with a generous pour of a
**savory and refreshing special sauce**, reminiscent of dipping sauce for soba noodles.
Cutting into the mild hamburg steak
and dipping it thoroughly in the sauce...
**I found this one to be much tastier!❤️**
Yappu also took a bite
and gave the Japanese-style version her vote too, haha!

Pop the yolk of the sunny-side-up egg
and eat it with the juicy hamburg steak,
and the richness doubles!

Personally, I wholeheartedly recommend
the Japanese-style hamburg steak over the original!
🍖Overall Experience & Summary

pretty generous portions!

It was a journey filled with delicious food and delightful little moments,

The author of this article received waiting number 37 and lost their ticket while waiting for at least an hour. Fortunately, they were allowed entry after showing the staff a photo of their waiting ticket that they had taken previously.
The author strongly recommended the 'Japanese-style Hamburg Steak' as more delicious. They explained that the grated radish and the savory yet refreshing special sauce paired excellently with the mild hamburg steak.
