When you come to Osaka, many of you will surely want to try the local sushi at least once.
While conveyor belt sushi might not offer that authentic local vibe, searching for true local sushi can often lead to surprisingly high prices.

Sushikin is a restaurant located on the first basement floor of the 'Whity Umeda' underground shopping mall, about a 5-minute walk from Umeda Station Exit 2.
It's super convenient, not only being close to Umeda Station but also located beneath the HEP Five shopping mall, making it a perfect spot to drop by for lunch or dinner while you're shopping in Umeda.
Operating from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM, this place is incredibly popular with locals, so it tends to fill up quickly, even at lunchtime.

I actually visited this spot during my Osaka trip in August and found myself returning again recently in October.
The prices are fantastic, the sushi quality is superb, and what truly impressed me was the ability to enjoy drinks at incredibly low prices during their 'Happy Hour,' which runs until 2:00 PM on weekdays.
So, if you're looking to pair high-quality sushi with some delightful drinks, I highly recommend visiting during weekday lunch hours!

How to Get to Sushikin Whity Umeda Branch
Since it's located in the Umeda underground shopping mall, it's easy to get a bit lost. So, let me guide you through the simplest way to get there.

Exit Umeda Station from Exit 2, turn right, and walk a short distance until you see an entrance to the underground shopping mall with a 'Whity' sign. Even if it's not this exact entrance, you'll find several other Whity entrances around the HEP Five shopping mall area.

Once you're in the underground mall, just remember 'North Mall 1,' and you'll find Sushikin with ease. (Do note there's also a North Mall 2, so be careful!)

Just follow North Mall 1, and you'll spot the Sushikin sign, just like in the picture!
Inside Sushikin: The Ambiance

The official Japanese name for Sushikin is 'Umeda Sakaba (Umeda Pub) Sushikin.' True to its 'Sakaba' name, right from the entrance, you'll see a selection of Nihonshu (Japanese sake) stored in refrigerators.

Inside, there were four tables for four people, and counter seating for about 10 guests.
The whole atmosphere felt just like a local Japanese eatery, which made it truly wonderful to enjoy both the ambiance and the delicious food.

What's more, ordering food was done online via QR codes placed at each seat.
With Korean translation and photos available, I had absolutely no trouble ordering.

Near the entrance inside the restaurant, there was also a pamphlet about Happy Hour.
Until 2 AM on weekdays, highballs and plain sours are just 66 yen, lemon sours are 99 yen, and draft beer is 319 yen — it's ridiculously affordable!
Because of this incredible value, I made sure to visit again during weekday lunch this time too.
My Review of the Sushi and Seafood Menu

Once you're seated, they first set up three things for you: wasabi, ginger, and a complimentary appetizer.
On this particular day, the appetizer was pickled pumpkin.
Since the drinks are so incredibly cheap during Happy Hour,
I started by ordering a sour and a highball, and then leisurely ordered some sushi and sashimi.

Since I arrived right at 11 AM for the opening and was among the first to order,
the food came out quickly.
Both the sushi and sashimi looked incredibly appetizing,
from their vibrant colors to their overall presentation!

Before diving in, I also ordered an extra draft beer and a nihonshu (sake).
Since Happy Hour means there's no burden on drink prices, I really felt free to order as much as I wanted!

The first dish I tried was the 7-piece sashimi platter.
Seeing how fresh the fish in the sushi was last time, I figured the sashimi would be delicious too, so I gave it a try.
And sure enough, it had a delightful firm and chewy texture,
and the fish was incredibly fresh with absolutely no hint of fishiness!

Next, I moved on to trying various types of sushi.
Both the salmon and amberjack were light and delicious,
and the amberjack, in particular, had a clean taste and satisfying chewiness!
Among these, the egg, shrimp, tuna gunkan, and corn salad gunkan are
surprisingly just 99 yen for two pieces!

Despite being affordable, these sushi pieces come with generous toppings,
making them incredibly satisfying.
These budget-friendly options were a great way to cleanse the palate,
and I imagine kids who aren't big on traditional sushi would absolutely love them!

Next up was the tuna three-cut assortment sushi.
You get one piece each of akami (lean tuna), chutoro (medium fatty tuna), and otoro (fatty tuna).

The tuna was brilliantly vibrant from its color alone, and with every bite,
that unique richness and umami flavor of tuna emerged.
Trying the three expensive cuts in order,
the umami of the fatty tuna belly (otoro) was indeed the most impressive.

Next up is one of Sushikin's signature dishes:
the Seafood Monaka. This dish is topped with various sashimi cuts and other seafood,
along with salmon roe and even sea urchin.
This dish is surprisingly affordable, yet you get to enjoy fresh, rich uni (sea urchin),
making it incredibly satisfying!

After enjoying the sea urchin roe separately, I tried folding the monaka
and taking a bite this time.
The delicate flavor of the fish, the salty burst of salmon roe,
combined with the savory crunch of the monaka,
created a surprisingly harmonious blend of these three tastes.
I highly recommend trying it folded like this!

The final dish was the Sea Urchin and Salmon Roe Sushi.
This is another signature menu item, with rice piled onto seaweed, generously topped
with salmon roe and sea urchin roe.
With premium ingredients piled high, it was a truly luxurious bite.
The popping texture of the salmon roe combined with the rich, creamy uni
made every mouthful a delight.
A Sushi Gem Worth Revisiting

Today, I've shared my experience at Sushikin, a fantastic value-for-money sushi restaurant
in Umeda that I recently revisited during my Osaka trip.
Overall, despite the incredibly reasonable prices,
both the sushi quality and taste were superb, which is why
I was thoroughly satisfied even on my return visit.
Especially if you're visiting with children who aren't keen on traditional sushi,
their ~$1 (99 JPY) sushi lineup includes options like corn salad and tuna mayo gunkan,
so everyone, young and old, is sure to find something they love!
Plus, on weekdays until 2 PM, they have a Happy Hour where
alcoholic beverages are unbelievably cheap!
If you're looking to pair your sushi with a refreshing beer or a sour,
don't hesitate — I highly recommend visiting during weekday afternoons!
Excessive alcohol consumption can lead to stroke, memory impairment, or dementia. Alcohol consumption during pregnancy increases the risk of birth defects.
