Osaka Umeda: Kiwami Wagyu Omakase Yakiniku Review

One of the greatest joys of any trip to Japan is discovering incredible local eateries, and Osaka is a foodie paradise! This time, I was on the hunt for a place where I could savor authentic Wagyu, but also comfortably bring along my 5-year-old. That search led me to Kiwami in Umeda, and it was a spectacular find.
Unlike typical yakiniku spots where you just order cuts of meat, Kiwami offers a Wagyu omakase course, presenting a delightful array of different Wagyu dishes. Get ready for delicious food, the luxury of private rooms, and why this spot is perfect for families traveling with children.
1. Kiwami Location & Operating Hours

The Osaka yakiniku restaurant, Kiwami, which I visited with my child, is conveniently located near Osaka's Umeda Station. Umeda is a bustling hub centered around Osaka Station, featuring major attractions like Hankyu Department Store, HEP Five, and Grand Front Osaka, making it ideal for combining shopping and sightseeing.
Its central location makes it a great choice for dinner after exploring the nearby tourist spots.

Choosing a restaurant during a family trip to Japan can be tricky, but Wagyu Yakiniku Kiwami Umeda branch stood out with its private rooms (koshitsu), allowing us to dine peacefully without worrying about disturbing other guests. It was a huge relief!
2. Umeda Yakiniku Restaurant Review:
Wagyu Omakase Experience

The Wagyu Omakase course we enjoyed began with Wagyu sushi, followed by an assortment of kimchi and namul (seasoned vegetables), smoked Wagyu yukhoe (beef tartare), and a delightful pot of rice, before the various cuts of Wagyu started arriving in succession.

Among them, the beef tartare sushi was a revelation! I initially worried about any potential fishiness from the raw meat, but it was incredibly fresh with absolutely no off-putting taste. Its tender texture combined with the rich, savory flavor unique to Wagyu made it an impressive start to the meal.
The smoked Wagyu yukhoe also left a lasting impression. Eating the fresh tartare with a raw egg really enhanced its richness and depth of flavor.

3. Enjoying a Variety of Wagyu in One Course

As we savored the yukhoe, the main meat courses began to arrive. First up was sukiyaki, served with a raw egg for dipping. The thinly sliced, tender beef was grilled to perfection, and my child thoroughly enjoyed it with plain white rice.

Following that, a parade of various Wagyu cuts arrived: misuji (a rare cut from the shoulder blade area), beef intestines, beef tongue, top blade, round, and outside skirt steak. Each piece was grilled to perfection, showcasing the unique textures and flavors of these premium cuts.
Opting for the Wagyu omakase course, rather than just one type of meat, truly offered the joy of experiencing a diverse range of Wagyu cuts and varieties.

The combination of freshly cooked pot rice and pickled onions with the grilled meat was particularly outstanding. I also appreciated that the staff frequently checked if we needed more rice throughout our meal.

For the final course, we could choose between Morioka cold noodles, Wagyu shigureni ochazuke (rice with green tea and seasoned beef), or spicy Wagyu curry. This customization was a great touch. I opted for the cold noodles, which were perfectly refreshing to conclude the meal.
4. Why Kiwami is Recommended for Family Trips to Japan

We visited with our 5-year-old and chose to share our adult course's rice with him instead of adding a separate child's course. This worked out perfectly for us.
When traveling with kids in Japan, the taste of the food is important, but so is the ability to eat comfortably without worrying about other diners. Wagyu Omakase Kiwami offers private, separated rooms for each table, allowing families to dine at ease.

The room interiors were also more spacious than I anticipated, making it easy to keep our stroller beside us without any inconvenience. There was even a dedicated closet for bags and coats, which was incredibly handy for travelers with lots of luggage, especially with children. Many omakase restaurants have age restrictions, but Kiwami welcomes children, which is a huge bonus for family vacations.
5. For a Special Dining Experience in Osaka

While Umeda boasts countless yakiniku restaurants, Kiwami is an excellent choice if you're looking for a place where you can comfortably dine with children while enjoying a premium Wagyu omakase experience.
The private koshitsu rooms mean you don't have to worry about other diners, and the attentive service from the staff made our entire meal thoroughly enjoyable.

Being able to sample various cuts of Wagyu offered a unique pleasure, different from the usual yakiniku experience. If you're planning to explore Osaka Station or the Umeda area, it's a fantastic idea to combine your shopping with a memorable dinner at Kiwami.
Whether you're on a family trip to Japan, a romantic date, or celebrating a special occasion, choosing Kiwami for a truly unforgettable meal will be a decision you won't regret!

The Wagyu Omakase course offers a variety of cuts, including Misuji (top blade), large intestine, beef tongue, chuck flap, round, and outside skirt. For your final meal, you can choose according to your preference from Morioka Reimen (cold noodles), Wagyu Shigureni Ochazuke (rice in dashi broth with simmered Wagyu), or Spicy Wagyu Curry.
In addition to private rooms, Kiwami offers spacious room areas large enough to comfortably place a stroller next to your table. There are also closets available to store bags and coats, which is convenient for travelers with children who may have a lot of luggage.
The Beef Yukhoe Sushi had an impressive soft texture without any fishiness, along with the distinctive savory taste of Wagyu. The Smoked Wagyu Yukhoe was enhanced in richness and flavor by eating the fresh yukhoe with a raw egg.
