On our last day exploring Osaka with friends, we were looking for a unique lunch spot near our hotel. One of my friends mentioned a soba restaurant that served noodles infused with yuzu peel! It sounded intriguing and was conveniently close, so we decided to give it a try.

The Umeda area of Osaka is bustling with markets and restaurants. We initially thought about exploring other dining options in the markets, but many stalls hadn't opened yet. So, we headed straight to Hyotei Yugiri Soba, known for its distinctive yuzu soba.

Hyotei Yugiri Soba had solid reviews on Google, and it seemed to be a favorite among locals, which is always a good sign when you're looking for an authentic experience.

While there are many soba shops around Osaka, especially near Umeda Station, we noticed that a good number of them had mixed or negative reviews. Hyotei Yugiri, however, consistently stood out with positive feedback, solidifying our decision to dine there.

The interior of this Umeda restaurant felt quite spacious, with plenty of seating options for both two and four people. The owner was incredibly friendly and even greeted us in Korean, which was a pleasant surprise!

It turns out they often have Korean customers, so they even had a Korean menu ready for us. It was really helpful to see the pictures, giving us a good idea of what each Japanese soba dish entailed.

After we each ordered our soba, they promptly served us warm oolong tea. It was a scorching day, and honestly, the hot tea was a bit much at the moment!

I opted for the set menu, which included the yuzu peel soba alongside a plate of vegetable tempura. My friends mostly ordered similar sets, though one decided to enjoy just the soba without the tempura.

The vegetable tempura at this Osaka Umeda soba spot was absolutely delicious. It was freshly fried with a thin, crispy batter, making each bite wonderfully crunchy. Served with grated radish, the subtle sweetness of the radish complemented the savory fried vegetables perfectly. Truly heavenly!

The soba noodles themselves were unique, made with yuzu peel, giving them a slightly yellowish hue that was different from the typical soba color. It was evident that the yuzu peel was truly incorporated into the noodles! The portion was generous, and both my friends and I thoroughly enjoyed the distinctive flavor.

The soba is served in a style where you dip small portions of noodles into a separate sauce bowl, and we quickly realized just how substantial the serving was! The dipping sauce itself was perfectly balanced—neither too sweet nor too salty—which allowed the delicate flavor of the yuzu noodles to shine through beautifully.

This Umeda restaurant has a rich history, founded back in 1952, meaning it's been serving delicious soba for over 70 years! You can feel that heritage in the interior, which retains much of its original, classic charm.

The soba we tasted in Osaka offered a different kind of charm compared to the familiar buckwheat noodles I've had before. The subtle yuzu aroma infused in the noodles, combined with the savory tsuyu dipping sauce, and the rich flavor added by a whisked egg yolk, created a truly unique and delightful experience. Paired with the crispy tempura, it was a perfectly satisfying meal.
If you're looking to explore a unique culinary gem in Osaka, I wholeheartedly recommend Hyotei Yugiri Soba!

The soba noodles here are unique because yuzu peel is added, giving them a yellowish tint unlike regular soba. The portion size of the noodles themselves is generous, and you can enjoy a subtle yuzu fragrance.
