Finally, my Osaka and Kyoto travelogue
is back with Part 8!
My husband and I usually
truly love playing tennis!
Since Japan is a powerhouse in tennis,
every time we visit, I've always thought, 'I'd love to hit some balls on a Japanese court!'
I've thought that so many times!🥺
But then Yappu was planning our Osaka itinerary,
and guess what? They found a
mixed doubles tournament happening at 'Mizuno Tennis Plaza Maishima'!
It was a weekend evening tournament, so we intentionally adjusted our schedule to move from Kyoto to Osaka just to participate.
To cut a long story short, it was truly unique and
an unforgettable memory!😆
We started from our Osaka accommodation,
the 'Wellina Nakanoshima West' Hotel,
took the subway once,
and then caught a bus from the bus stop!

It's pretty accessible from the city center or the Umeda area,
and it took about 45 minutes by bus
to get there!

Buses don't come very often in this area,
so most locals visit by car!
If you haven't rented a car, you absolutely must check your return trip in advance!
Since the tournament was expected to finish late in the evening,
we coolly decided to call an Uber...
You all know how terrifyingly expensive Japanese taxis can be,
right 😭
It was a bit of a distance, requiring us to cross a big bridge
near Universal, so it ended up being
almost ~$35...💸
But with all the Uber discounts, we smartly got it for just over ~$28 ㅋㅋㅋㅋ (Phew, my money!)

When we got off at the bus stop,
we realized this whole area was a sports center and a huge park,
with futsal courts and baseball fields!
Locals were driving up to walk their dogs,
and kids were out exercising – it was a really lively atmosphere!
We headed straight into the center
to get our player registration sorted out step by step!
Since we don't have Japanese names,
we competed as 'Mr. Lee' and 'Mr. Park'!
Thinking back, the combination of 'Mr. Lee' and 'Mr. Park'
is still hilarious, right?🤣
When we asked the staff member helping us
if any other Koreans had ever participated,
they said we were the first ㅋㅋㅋ
Haha, we all laughed, amazed by each other –
it was such a heartwarming atmosphere!
As expected from a Mizuno Sports Center,
they were selling a variety of Mizuno goods,
and the vending machines were well-stocked too, so it was fun to look around
and think, 'Oh, so this is what Japanese tennis culture is like!'

👟 Indoor Courts & The Shoe Meltdown Incident
(Must-Read!)
The outdoor weather was amazing,
but the indoor courts were even more comfortable!
And unlike some facilities back home
where dust can often fly around, this wasn't like that at all,
and the spaces between the total of 4 courts
were all perfectly blocked by nets,
so there was zero worry about balls flying onto the next court!
The spacing was also generous, allowing us to focus
and play perfectly. 👍
But here's a huge plot twist... (Shoe Tip!!)
We both thought the courts were artificial turf,
so we brought clay court shoes, right?
But when we actually got there, it was completely carpet material...!! 😱
Our feet kept getting caught and slipping on the carpet,
so we couldn't hit the ball properly ㅠㅠㅠ
For anyone planning to visit, to avoid the same unfortunate situation we faced,
we strongly recommend you absolutely bring 'all-court shoes'!
ㅠㅠ!!
🏆 We got thoroughly beaten,
but achieved mental victory! LOL
The mixed doubles tournament saw a total of 9 teams participate,
who were drawn into Groups A, B, and C,
and then proceeded in a tournament format!
It was a friendly tournament guaranteeing at least 3 games,
which was great because we could play comfortably 🎾
However, since there were no experience limits,
the local players' skills were truly incredible...
A tennis newbie like me definitely got a good beating...🤣
But I kept telling myself, "This is all a learning experience!"
and truly achieved that mental victory LOL
Even the warm-up routines before the main game
were different from Korea, which was fascinating,
and it felt like we truly added a unique, special touch
to our usual Japan trips, making it an unforgettable experience ❤️
For all you tennis lovers planning a trip to Osaka,
I highly recommend setting aside about a day from your itinerary
to experience playing on a local court!

From Wellina Hotel, walk to the Deiribashi bus stop, take bus #56 to Nishikujo, transfer to bus #81, and get off at Maishima Chuo bus stop. The total journey takes 1 hour and 6 minutes, and the fare is JP¥420.
Bus services are infrequent in this area, so consider using Uber late in the evening. Due to the distance crossing the bridge near Universal Studios, an Uber fare will be around ~$35, and with discounts applied, it can be used for around ~$28.
The indoor courts at Mizuno Tennis Plaza Maishima are carpeted. Therefore, we strongly recommend bringing 'all-court shoes' instead of clay court shoes to prevent your feet from getting caught or slipping.
Mizuno Tennis Plaza Maishima operates from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM on weekdays. On weekends, it is available from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM.
