Osaka, Japan
Unagino Nakasho Shinsaibashi
As expected from Osaka, often called "Japan's Kitchen,"
on this trip, I made sure to try one of Japan's quintessential dishes,
Unagi Donburi (grilled eel rice bowl).
From Unagi Don, featuring a whole, succulent grilled eel,
to Hitsumabushi, which you can savor in various delightful ways!
Even though they are all eel rice bowls,
being able to choose according to personal preference made for
a truly unique experience.
You could even directly watch the eel grilling process there,
so I'll be writing a review of Unagino Nakasho,
the famous eel rice bowl restaurant in Osaka's Shinsaibashi.
1. Unagino Nakasho: The Lowdown

Unagino Nakasho, the eel rice bowl restaurant in Osaka's Shinsaibashi,
is located
just a 5-minute walk
from Shinsaibashi Station.

Since eel rice bowls themselves have a somewhat higher price point
and are considered a relatively luxurious dish,
it seemed that many families traveling with their parents
were visiting.
I don't know if it's just me,
but when traveling with parents,
I somehow feel that ordering food
should proceed more smoothly.

Fortunately, it seemed one of the staff members was Korean,
so Korean language assistance was available!
From reservation confirmation to ordering,
everything was much easier here.
Reservations are possible through Tabelog,
and if you click on the reservation link >> here <<,
you can go directly to it.
2. Inside Shinsaibashi's Unagi Donburi Gem: The Ambiance

The interior of the restaurant had a cozy and neat atmosphere.
The softly lit lighting
really suited the eel rice bowl ambiance.

Unagino Nakasho Shinsaibashi offers something unique:
you can directly observe the eel cooking process.
They've intentionally placed a window towards the kitchen area,
allowing you to see the eels being skewered
and grilled all at once,
right up close.

Seeing the cooking process, just like an open kitchen,
made me feel assured about their hygiene, which was great.
They've even prepared a space where you can comfortably take photos,
making it a fun experience
even for travelers with children.

The eels were quite large,
and just watching them grill was appetizing.
Observing the cooking process while waiting for our meal
made the waiting time pass quickly,
and built up even more anticipation for the food.
3. My Dining Experience at Unagino Nakasho

At Unagino Nakasho,
the popular restaurant in Osaka's Shinsaibashi,
we ordered Umaki (1,300 yen)
and Unagi Don (5,600 yen).
We ordered **Hitsumabushi (4,500 yen)**.

First, **Umaki** is a dish where eel is wrapped in an omelet.
While I've actually had eel rice bowls in Korea quite often,
the idea of eel rolled up in an omelet was so unique
that I just had to order it!

Inside the **fluffy omelet**, the
**savory yet tender eel** was absolutely perfect
as an **appetizer** to whet our appetites.
Considering Japan's egg dishes are
so famous and delicious,
this was a fantastic side menu to order
without any hesitation.

**Unagidon** was a dish where the eel wasn't chopped into small pieces;
instead, a large, **whole piece was served** on top.
The long piece of eel served over the rice
looked incredibly appetizing!

It had great visual appeal for photos, and the
plump, whole piece of eel was wonderfully sweet and delicious.

**Hitsumabushi** is a dish where the **eel is sliced**
into smaller pieces, making it easy to enjoy with rice.
You divide the sliced eel into four portions
and try it in three different ways, then enjoy
the last portion in whichever way suited your taste best.

The first way is to eat it **as is**.
Simply enjoy the eel and rice first,
without adding anything else.
The second way is to add the
**condiments served alongside**.
Even with the same rice bowl, it's amazing how you can
enjoy it differently depending on what you add!

The third way is to enjoy it as **ochazuke**!
Pour the accompanying broth over it and savor a completely
different form of the dish you were just eating.

Being able to experience three different flavors
from a single dish, Hitsumabushi was personally more my style!
By the way, these three ways of eating are also shown as videos on the menu!

We absolutely devoured all our dishes, leaving nothing behind!
When it's time to pay, you just hand the wooden tablet with your
table number to the counter.
Watching the eels being grilled, we enjoyed a delicious meal at
Unagino Nakasho, a true local gem in Shinsaibashi.
If you're looking for a fail-safe, delicious eel rice bowl restaurant
in Osaka's Shinsaibashi, I highly recommend Unagino Nakasho!
Well then, I'll be back next time
with more travel tips!
