But then my parents told me,

"This is even tougher than a package tour!" and I was pretty shocked.

I realized then that our parents' stamina is weaker than we might think...

Honestly, they both usually enjoy traveling quite a bit, so I had no idea they'd find it this challenging!!

That's why minimizing travel routes and reducing unnecessary transfers is so incredibly important when traveling with parents.

Choosing the right pass needs to focus on these points for a truly successful trip.

Let's compare three Osaka transportation passes at a glance!

From Kansai Airport to Namba: How to get there comfortably with your parents?

Arriving at Kansai International Airport (KIX) and getting to Namba really sets the first impression for your trip.

When you're with your parents,

For a comfortable journey without transfers, seated all the way,

it's best to consider options that allow you to travel

smoothly from start to finish.

The two methods I highly recommend are

the 'Nankai Rapi:t' and

the 'Kansai Airport Limousine Bus.'

The Nankai Rapi:t is

a limited express train with all reserved seating,

offering ample luggage space

and reaching Namba in just about 40 minutes.

It's truly the pinnacle of comfort!

The Kansai Airport Limousine Bus is

a direct bus to Namba OCAT (Osaka City Air Terminal),

and it's super convenient as you can load your luggage into the cargo hold.

However, please note that travel times can fluctuate

depending on traffic conditions.

While there's also the Nankai Airport Express,

during holiday periods, there's a high chance you'll have to stand,

which might be a bit challenging

if you're traveling with your parents.

Ultimately, the Nankai Rapi:t or the Limousine Bus are the most suitable options

for your initial journey with your parents.

The Osaka Amazing Pass: Can You Make the Most of It with Your Parents?

The Osaka Amazing Pass allows for

unlimited rides on Osaka city's subway and buses,

but its biggest advantage is granting

free admission to over 40 major tourist attractions.

If you're with your parents,

this free admission benefit is truly a lifesaver!

Instead of spending money exploring various places,

you can cover all facility entrance fees with one pass,

which helps you save significantly on travel expenses.

My parents, in particular,

loved enjoying places like Osaka Castle's Main Tower,

the Umeda Sky Building Floating Garden Observatory,

and the River Cruise for free.

Of course, there are a few things to keep in mind.

At Osaka Castle's Main Tower,

there's an elevator up to the middle floors, but

you'll need to use stairs for the upper levels, so

your parents might find it a bit strenuous...!

The Umeda Sky Building Floating Garden Observatory also

features a transparent glass escalator for the final section,

which might be a bit much if anyone has a fear of heights.

Popular spots like Tsutenkaku Tower

can have long queues, so

it's a good idea to check before visiting.

This pass does not cover transportation from the airport to Namba,

so you'll need to prepare your airport transfer tickets separately.

If you're eager to visit Kyoto, a railway pass might seem right,

but since you can't take buses, you'll end up walking quite a bit after getting off.

I figured if we increased travel over our 4-day trip, my parents might get tired quickly.

So, I opted for the Osaka Amazing Pass 2-day ticket

to explore Osaka thoroughly.

However, since it was a consecutive 2-day pass, we had to cram our itinerary into those two days, which made it a bit intense...^^ haha

Kansai Railway Pass: Good for a trip to Kyoto?

The Kansai Railway Pass allows

unlimited use of private railways and subways

across the wider Kansai region, including Osaka,

Kyoto, Nara, and Kobe.

Do note that JR lines are not included.

The biggest advantage of this pass is that

it can be used non-consecutively!

During your 4-day itinerary, you can choose the days with heavy travel

to use a 2-day or 3-day pass, which is great because it allows you to

flexibly adjust your schedule

according to your parents' condition.

Also, you can use this pass immediately after taking the Nankai Line

from Kansai International Airport, so

it even covers your airport transfer!

However, with the 2024 revision,

buses and Kyoto's Randen (tram) have been

excluded from the pass's coverage, and

fares have also increased.

So, thinking 'it's convenient because buses are included'

based on old reviews is actually misinformation!!!

Therefore, if you plan to use buses a lot

in Kyoto city, you might have to pay extra fares

or end up with longer walking distances ㅠㅠ

Just so you know, Kyoto bus fares can be pretty steep....

When is an ICOCA Card advantageous?

ICOCA is a prepaid transportation card

that you load money onto beforehand.

It's super convenient because it can be used not only

on subways, private railways, and buses in Osaka and the Kansai region,

but also for payments at convenience stores and vending machines.

My parents found it much more comfortable to simply

tap and go without having to worry about their balance

at the ticket gate or the hassle of buying tickets from a machine every time.

The ICOCA card can be more advantageous than a pass

if you only use public transportation 2-3 times or less per day,

and don't necessarily need free admission benefits to facilities.

For example, if you visit Kyoto for just one day during a 4-day itinerary,

combining the round-trip fare between Osaka and Kyoto

with a few trips within Kyoto city might make

using an ICOCA card cheaper than a pass.

A deposit of 500 yen is required when issuing the card,

and a fee is charged for refunds, so it's good to be aware of this.
