Osaka Dotonbori Namba Izakaya
Robatayaki Mizukakechaya
My first ever Robatayaki experience in Osaka happened at
Robatayaki Mizukakechaya, a renowned local izakaya in Namba!

Robatayaki is essentially a Japanese-style charcoal grill where ingredients are cooked right in front of you
and then served immediately. It's a fantastic, interactive dining experience!
Unlike typical izakayas that might only offer skewers, Robatayaki Mizukakechaya boasts a much more diverse menu,
featuring everything from fresh seafood and prime meats to vibrant vegetables and even grilled rice balls.
Location

You'll find this gem conveniently located in the city center, just a 3-minute walk from Dotonbori
and a 4-minute walk from Namba Station. It's perfectly situated for a spontaneous visit!
Operating Hours: Daily from 4:00 PM to 11:00 PM
📍 Hozenji Yokocho Robatayaki Mizukakechaya
1-chōme-1-20 Namba, Chuo Ward, Osaka, 542-0076 Japan
Inside the Restaurant

The interior features a warm, wood-toned design, exuding that authentic local izakaya vibe.
The first floor primarily offers counter seating, ideal for solo diners or couples looking for an intimate experience.

For larger groups or those preferring a more relaxed setting, the second and third floors offer spacious table seating.
When I visited, almost everyone else was a local, which is always a great sign!

Worried about your clothes smelling smoky? Don't be! You can conveniently store your bags and coats
underneath your seat or hang them on the provided coat racks.

Just look at that array of fresh seafood and meats, ready to be grilled right before your eyes!
Everything looked incredibly fresh and inviting.
The Menu

The menu here is incredibly diverse, featuring a wide selection of seafood, meats, vegetables,
sashimi, fried dishes, and rice options.
What's even better is that all items are uniformly priced at 350 yen, making it super easy to calculate your bill
and offering great value, especially for a spot right in the heart of Namba!
It seems to be gaining popularity among international visitors, as they even have an English menu available now.
My Food Review

Of course, a visit to an izakaya isn't complete without ordering draft beer and a highball!
And just a heads-up, that draft beer is the small size... it's still quite generous!

Our first dishes to arrive were the
Firefly Squid Okizuke and Chicken Wings.
The squid was wonderfully savory and flavorful, without any hint of fishiness. The chicken wings came with a sweet and savory soy-based sauce,
reminiscent of the delicious soy-garlic chicken I've had back home!

Next up was the Tsukune Skewer.
These minced chicken meatballs were perfectly grilled and incredibly juicy. They paired wonderfully with the accompanying mustard sauce.
Definitely a must-try for any meat lover!

Then came the Live Scallops with Butter.
The moment they arrived, the rich aroma of butter filled the air. The scallops were incredibly tender and had a delightful chewy texture.
I'd highly recommend this dish even if you're not usually a big fan of seafood – the butter really makes it approachable!

The Grilled Turban Shell came with two substantial pieces, each quite large.
Remember to remove the darker internal organs before enjoying!

Honestly, I was a bit hesitant about the Grilled Japanese Yam at first.
My husband convinced me to try just one bite with my eyes closed, and I'm so glad I did!
It genuinely tasted just like a potato! Dipped in a little salt, it had the texture of a yam but the familiar flavor of a potato.
I never thought I'd enjoy yam so much. Highly recommend giving it a shot!

Considered a main highlight, the Natural Jumbo Salt-Grilled Prawns were magnificent.
They were large and packed with succulent meat. Squeezing some fresh lemon over them eliminated any hint of a strong seafood smell,
making them even more enjoyable.

Next, we tried the Mochi, Cheese, and Bacon Wrap.
With chewy mochi, savory bacon, and melted cheese, this combination is practically guaranteed to be delicious!
It's a straightforward, satisfying flavor. Absolutely tasty!

The Grilled Onigiri, lightly brushed with soy sauce, had a delightful crispy exterior and a moist, flavorful interior.
It was the perfect accompaniment to all the grilled dishes.

For the grand finale, we had the Grilled Sea Bream Head.
As the name suggests, it's literally a fish head! I'm a big fan of fish, so I thoroughly enjoyed it.
It felt like all the delicious flavors of the fish were concentrated into this one dish.

To cleanse our palates, we finished with a refreshing Yuzu Sherbet.
It was the perfect light and tangy end to a fantastic meal.
My first Robatayaki experience was truly memorable, and it's clear why this spot is so popular with locals.
Great prices, a prime location, and incredibly delicious food!
I wholeheartedly recommend Hozenji Yokocho Robatayaki Mizukakechaya for your Osaka adventure!
