Hazama Osaka Namba: Authentic Local Okonomiyaki Experience
Stumble upon Hazama, a true local teppanyaki spot near Wellstay Namba in Osaka. Enjoy delicious okonomiyaki, yakisoba, and cold beer for an authentic taste of Japan – don't forget your cash!
While staying at Welstay Namba,
I was looking for a casual spot near our accommodation
to grab a beer in the evening,
and that's how we stumbled upon the okonomiyaki place, 'Hazama'.
It had a completely different vibe
from the bustling tourist hubs like Dotonbori.
From the outside, it felt exactly like a local Japanese neighborhood eatery,
which is why it actually became one of the most memorable places
from this Osaka trip.

The Real Osaka Night Scene, Discovered Right Near Our Accommodation
It's right next to Welstay Namba,
so we just walked over without planning to go far.
This area isn't as flashy or touristy
as Dotonbori;
instead, it's lined with houses and small shops.
Walking around at night, it truly felt like exploring
a local Osaka neighborhood.

That's when 'Hazama' caught our eye.
The large kanji character 間 on the sign
At first, I wasn't sure how to read the name,
but in Japanese, it's pronounced 'Hazama'.

The exterior of the restaurant didn't feel like it was deliberately styled
to look "Japanese" for tourists.
It just looked like a small, long-established
teppan grill place in the neighborhood!
I had really wanted to experience a place like this
on this trip,
and we found it right on our doorstep!
Hazama Doesn't Accept Card Payments
Here's something important to know!
Hazama doesn't accept card payments; only cash is possible.

We found this out before going in,
so we popped over to the FamilyMart across the street,
withdrew some cash from the ATM, and then headed back.
Many travelers in Japan might only carry cards,
but it's definitely more convenient to have some cash ready before visiting this place.
From Okonomiyaki to Yakisoba: The Menu
Inside, every table had a teppan grill,
and the menu centered around okonomiyaki and yakisoba,
offering various teppan dishes and simple snacks.

Okonomiyaki options include:
Pork 850 JPY
Beef, Squid, Shrimp 950 JPY
Sujikon 1,200 JPY
Mixed 1,300 JPY
Yakisoba options include:
Pork starts from 800 JPY
Mixed Yakisoba is 1,200 JPY
They also had Omsoba, Yakiudon, and Sobameshi.

They also had a variety of alcoholic beverages like beer, sake, and chuhai,
as well as simple side dishes
like kimchi, cold tofu, and edamame.
It was a perfect setup for a dinner accompanied by a beer.

After some deliberation,
we ordered the Mixed Okonomiyaki and Mixed Yakisoba.
The Mixed Okonomiyaki includes
pork, squid, and shrimp,
priced at 1,300 JPY!
We wanted to try a variety of ingredients
rather than just one type,
so we opted for the mixed versions of both.
Cooked Fresh on the Teppan Grill Right After Ordering
As soon as we placed our order,
they started preparing it right on the teppan grill.

This isn't a place where they simply reheat pre-made dishes;
instead, once you place your order,
you can watch them prepare each one fresh right in front of you.
It was actually quite entertaining to observe the whole process!

Once the okonomiyaki is perfectly cooked,
they bring it straight to the hot teppan right in front of your table.
Thanks to this, it stays wonderfully warm throughout your meal,
and with the delicious aroma of the sauce wafting up from the griddle,
my hand naturally reached for the beer sitting next to me!
Mixed Okonomiyaki: The Perfect Beer Companion!
Since I was in Osaka, I absolutely had to try okonomiyaki,
and I'd been looking forward to it!
The moment I took the first bite, I knew pairing it with a beer
was an excellent decision.

The sauce was rich and flavorful,
and with generous pieces of pork, squid, and shrimp in every bite,
it was perfect for slowly savoring each delicious slice.

The seafood ingredients, in particular,
were fresh and clean-tasting, without any chewiness or fishiness.
And because it was cooked right off the teppan,
it tasted even more incredibly delicious!
To complement it, a refreshing draft beer!
A medium-sized draft beer costs ~$4.
After a full day of walking around,
it tasted especially good as we enjoyed it back near our accommodation.
That beer was seriously refreshing!

Instead of seeking out some grand bar,
the atmosphere of sitting at a local teppan spot,
enjoying an okonomiyaki and a drink, truly gave us
that authentic Osaka travel experience.
It just felt right!
Mixed Yakisoba Follows Right After!
While we were savoring the okonomiyaki,
the mixed yakisoba arrived shortly after.
The yakisoba also featured
pork, squid, and shrimp,
and the noodles were wonderfully infused with the sauce,
plus it was packed with plenty of ingredients!
While the okonomiyaki was delicious,
I honestly loved the yakisoba just as much!
It was stir-fried fresh on the teppan, so the noodles weren't mushy,
and with every bite of vegetables, meat, and seafood together,
it stayed interesting and delightful right to the end.

If you're dining as a pair, instead of ordering multiple okonomiyaki,
a fantastic combination is
to order one okonomiyaki and one yakisoba
and share them both!
Edamame: The Kid-Approved Snack!
As we were eating, we realized we should order something else
that our child could enjoy.
The menu item I initially thought was just "peas"
is actually Edamame (枝豆), a common sight in Japan.

These are boiled green soybeans, lightly salted –
a classic simple snack in Japan!
One plate costs ~$2!
Our child seemed to really enjoy the fun of popping each bean out of its pod,
and just kept reaching for more!
If you're visiting an okonomiyaki place with kids,
this is a great side dish to order instead of something spicy or heavily seasoned.
A Must-Try if You're Near Wellstay Namba!
Osaka is absolutely packed
with famous okonomiyaki spots, but Hazama felt a little different.
It's not quite a bustling tourist attraction you'd go out of your way to find.
If you're staying at Wellstay Namba
and looking for a late dinner close to your accommodation,
or just want to enjoy some delicious okonomiyaki and yakisoba
with a refreshing beer,
this is a perfect spot for a relaxed, casual stroll!
What truly made it memorable for us, especially,
was experiencing an authentic Osaka evening
in a charming neighborhood spot, rather than a restaurant bustling with tourists.
These kinds of places really stick with you.
Just a heads-up: they don't accept card payments,
so if you plan on visiting Hazama, make sure to bring cash!
