Craving Osaka's best steamed buns? Our 2026 review of 551 Horai in Namba covers their famous Butaman, gyoza, and sweet & sour pork meatballs. Find prices and family tips!
If you asked me what food from Osaka stands out most in my memory,
I wouldn't hesitate to say 551 Horai.
It wasn't even on my must-eat list when I first arrived.
After landing in Osaka and getting off at Namba Station, I was feeling peckish. I decided to grab something to-go before heading to our accommodation, and that's how I stumbled upon this gem.
But let me tell you, one bite of their incredible steamed pork bun
and I was completely hooked!
I couldn't stop thinking about it throughout our trip, so we went back a second time. And on the day we were flying back home, I even packed up some gyoza and sweet and sour pork meatballs to enjoy on the way to the airport.

With its prominent red sign and large '551' numbers, it was easy to spot. There was a constant stream of people buying buns at the storefront.
We decided to grab some for a quick snack at our accommodation.

Our First Haul: 10 Steamed Pork Buns
Our initial purchase was 551 Horai's signature item: the pork steamed bun, known in Japan as a Butaman.

At first, I thought we'd just grab a few for a snack, but since the kids were with us, we opted for a pack of 10!

As of late 2026, the official take-out prices are:
Butaman: 2 for ~$3, 4 for ~$7, 6 for ~$10, 10 for ~$17.
Grilled Gyoza: 10 for ~$3, 15 for ~$4.
The sweet and sour pork meatballs (Amasudango) I tried later are ~$3 for a pack of 10.

I Seriously Want to Eat These Steamed Buns Again!

They were piping hot right out of the box! Each bun is a decent size, so a few of them make for a surprisingly filling snack when you're hungry.

But the real reason I went back to 551 Horai wasn't just their size, it was the incredible flavor.

The filling, a delicious mix of pork and onions, was perfectly seasoned and incredibly moist, with no hint of gamey flavor. And honestly, I found the bun wrapper itself to be absolutely delicious.

Sometimes, big steamed buns can have a thick, dry wrapper that makes you want to just eat the filling. But here, the wrapper was thick yet incredibly soft and fluffy.

The slightly sweet wrapper combined with the savory pork filling was a winning combination that even the kids absolutely loved.
We ate so many different things in Osaka, but if I had to pick just one dish that I still crave after the trip, this would be my top choice.
We Ended Up Going Back Before Our Trip Was Over!
If I had only eaten it once, it probably wouldn't have stuck with me so much, but I kept thinking about those buns throughout the entire trip.
So, on the day we were flying back to the U.S.,
it was 551 Horai again!
A True Namba, Osaka Must-Eat
This time, I didn't just buy the steamed buns; I also tried some other menu items I hadn't tasted yet.

The Gyoza and Sweet & Sour Pork Meatballs Are Delicious Too!
The gyoza were crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, perfect for eating on the go.

If the steamed buns are soft and hearty, the gyoza are a bit saltier and incredibly addictive! But what really surprised me with how good it was, were the sweet and sour pork meatballs.

Officially called Amasudango at 551 Horai, these pork meatballs are coated in a generous amount of tangy and sweet sauce.

We devoured them on our way to Kansai Airport, enjoying them right up until the very end of our trip!
Seriously, if it were possible, I would have packed a whole box to bring back home.
A Must-Try When You're in Namba, Osaka
There were some famous places we visited that ended up being just okay, but 551 Horai truly hit the spot for our family's taste buds. The fact that we intentionally went back twice speaks for itself!
If you're visiting for the first time, definitely try the Butaman. I also recommend grabbing some gyoza and the sweet and sour pork meatballs to go.
My kids loved them, so I highly recommend 551 Horai for anyone traveling to Osaka with children and looking for easy, delicious meal options.
Next time I visit Osaka, I know the first thing I'll do after arriving in Namba is head straight for 551 Horai again!
