Osaka boasts such a vast array of delicious foods that your travel itinerary could fly by just from eating!
While many dishes come to mind when you think of Osaka, one food I always make sure to enjoy every time I visit is 'Kushikatsu'.
Kushikatsu literally means "skewered cutlet." It's a simple, delightful snack where various ingredients — from vegetables, meat, and seafood, to even fruits — are skewered, coated in batter, and deep-fried.
It pairs absolutely perfectly with beer, and there's a unique joy in choosing and frying your favorite ingredients. I highly recommend you give it a try!
Today, I'll introduce you to some fantastic Kushikatsu restaurants near Osaka's Namba and Umeda districts, one from each area!
1. Yatai Fukuro (Near Namba)
Opening Hours: 6:00 PM ~ 11:00 PM (Weekends from 5:00 PM)
Closed: Never
Location: 7-minute walk from Nankai Namba Station, 3-minute walk from Kintetsu Nipponbashi Station

📍Our first Kushikatsu must-try is Kushikatsu Yatai Fukuro, located near Namba.

From its exterior, it already exudes the aura of a true culinary gem, and inside, it's an izakaya with an authentic local vibe. The walls are adorned with paper menus, and the decor features a wonderful variety of Nihonshu (Japanese sake)!

The main menu, of course, features skewered fried delights, with each skewer costing around 140 to 300 yen. You can choose from a variety of ingredients, including vegetables like mushrooms, onions, and bell peppers, meats like beef and pork, and even seafood such as tuna and oysters.

Drinks are reasonably priced, with beer around 600 yen and other alcoholic beverages in the 500-yen range. What's unique is that they also offer Asahi Black beer!

We decided to try just five kinds of skewers: pork, smelt, cheese, mochi, and eggplant. Although the batter was a bit thick, it was fried to a perfect crisp, creating a fantastic balance of crunchy outside and tender inside.
And with the hard-to-find Asahi Black draft beer alongside, it tasted even more incredible.
Fukuro is an izakaya with the strongest local feel, highly recommended for anyone who wants to immerse themselves in the authentic local atmosphere!
2. Kushiniwa (Near Namba)
Opening Hours: 4:00 PM ~ 11:00 PM
Closed: Never
Location: 10-minute walk from Nankai Namba Station, 2-minute walk from Kintetsu Nipponbashi Station

📍 Our second fantastic Kushikatsu spot is also near Namba: a restaurant called Kushiniwa.
Although it's near Namba, it's also not far from Dotonbori, making it a convenient location for a casual evening visit. However, the restaurant is on the second floor of a somewhat humble-looking building, so you might not easily stumble upon it by chance.

The interior of the restaurant felt more like a traditional Japanese set menu restaurant than an izakaya, and since it was early evening, there weren't many customers yet.
With ample space and generous seating arrangements,
it felt much more comfortable to enjoy our meal.

You'll find nearly 30 varieties of kushikatsu here,
with prices ranging from 100 yen to 400 yen. With skewers starting at just 100 yen, the value for money
really seemed excellent at this restaurant.
Another big plus for this spot is their
'Choi Nomi Set,' which lets you casually enjoy
three skewers and a drink.
Thanks to this special menu, you can pop in for a quick bite
and a sip without feeling any pressure or awkwardness.

The fried items were incredibly crispy, and the
texture of the ingredients was wonderfully preserved.
What's more, they even had skewers like fried pickled ginger on the menu
to balance out any richness, so I could keep enjoying them without getting overwhelmed.
Though the skewers had a simple, rustic appearance,
among all the kushikatsu I've personally tasted,
this restaurant was hands down one of the most delicious!
3. Yoneya near Umeda
Operating Hours: 11:00 AM ~ 9:00 PM
Closed: None
Location: Umeda Chika-ro (Umeda Station B1F)

📍 Our third and final stop is Yoneya, a local kushikatsu joint
nestled in the Umeda Station underground passage.
It's a shop in Umeda Station's underground shopping street,
with an atmosphere where office workers might stop by after work
to casually unwind with a drink.

Typically, kushikatsu spots offer a shared sauce, meaning
you can only dip your skewer once. But at Yoneya, they give each person their own sauce pot,
so you can dip as much as you want.

The batter had a lovely golden-brown hue, much like perfectly toasted bread,
and wasn't too thick, so it never felt heavy.
Most importantly, being able to dip the sauce multiple times
meant I could customize every bite to my exact taste.
What truly sets Yoneya apart is the
distinct local vibe you'll experience, different from the two kushikatsu joints I mentioned earlier.
If you're looking to tap into that 'salaryman's after-work unwind' feeling – enjoying kushikatsu
and a cold beer after a long day – then Yoneya is absolutely the place for you!

Today, I’ve introduced you to three fantastic kushikatsu spots
located around Osaka's Namba and Umeda areas.
Let me quickly sum up who each place is perfect for,
based on its unique charm:
Yatai Fukurouku ▶️ The Ultimate Local Vibe
Kushiniwa ▶️ The Most Delicious Kushikatsu
Yoneya ▶️ The Salaryman's After-Work Drink Experience
Since all three have such distinct appeals,
I recommend visiting the one that best suits your taste!
So, next time you're adventuring in Osaka, make sure to dive into its famous
kushikatsu – you won't regret it!
'Yatai Fukuro' opens at 5 PM on weekends. This restaurant is known for serving rare Asahi Black Draft Beer.
Yes, 'Kushiniwa' offers 100-yen skewers, providing great value for money. They also offer a 'Choi Nomi Set' where you can lightly enjoy three skewers and one drink.
Unlike most kushikatsu restaurants that provide a communal sauce container, 'Yoneya' offers individual sauce containers for each person. This allows you to dip your food in the sauce as many times as you like.
From Nankai Namba Station, 'Yatai Fukuro' is approximately a 7-minute walk, and 'Kushiniwa' is approximately a 10-minute walk.
