🐟 Osaka Robata Grilled Fish Hotspot
We highly recommend Robata x Sushi Hana if you:
✔︎ Are looking for authentic, delicious eats in Osaka
✔︎ Want to try traditional, primitive-style grilled fish (Irori/Robatayaki)
✔︎ Want to soak in those genuine, local Japanese travel vibes
On a recent trip to Osaka—the ultimate city of gastronomy—with my parents,
I really wanted to treat them to a unique and memorable dining experience.
I heard about this izakaya in Fukushima, right near Umeda,
where they serve traditional "primitive-style" robatayaki fish grilled over hot coals.
I knew it would create unforgettable memories
for them, so we just had to go!
The Interior
Robata x Sushi Hana Ura-Fukushima has two floors.
The first floor features counter seating (bar seats),
which is absolutely charming because you can watch the star of the show—the fish—
being slow-grilled over the coals, along with other dishes being prepared
right in front of your eyes in real-time!
The second floor also offers some counter seats along with cozy tables,
creating a more relaxed atmosphere where you can chat and enjoy
a private meal together.
The Menu
Although there isn't a separate English-only menu, English descriptions are provided on the Japanese menu,
making it pretty easy to order. But the best part?
They have QR codes at each table that let you access
a translated menu in various languages on your phone!
Wondering what to get? Since we made it all the way to Osaka,
we decided to sample a bit of everything!
From Robata x Sushi Hana's exciting lineup, we ordered:
"Hana's Signature Dishes,"
the "5-Piece Sashimi Platter," the intriguing "Adult's Playing with Fire" dish, the Primitive-style Grilled Fish,
the Kuroshari (black vinegared rice) Sushi Omakase Assortment, and some dessert.
After we ordered, they let us choose our own cute chopstick rests
to go with our table setting—
such a charming and unique little touch!
Hana's Signature Dishes
Chawanmushi & Mushroom Salad
To start, we were served a silky, comforting Japanese savory egg custard (Chawanmushi) and a fresh mushroom salad.
The mushroom salad seemed to use raw, uncooked mushrooms,
giving it a surprisingly delightful, earthy crunch that we really enjoyed.
Seasonal Fruit with Prosciutto & Cheese
Next up was the seasonal fruit with cured ham and cheese!
It looked absolutely gorgeous, but honestly, the combo of fresh fruit and cured ham felt a bit unfamiliar at first.
I wondered, "Will these two actually go together?" But to my surprise, they paired incredibly well!
My dad was a bit hesitant to try it because it was so new to him, but once he took a bite,
he loved it and said he was so glad he gave it a chance.
The cured ham and cheese paired with fig was a standout—absolutely delicious!
The "Adults' Playing with Fire" Course
The "Adults' Playing with Fire" course featured mirin-dried sardine, shiitake mushroom,
and Kyoto Manganji pepper .
Once we ordered, they brought out a small personal grill with hot charcoal,
which made the whole dining experience feel so unique and exciting!
Kyoto Manganji Pepper
The owner was so kind and explained exactly how to grill and eat everything,
so we were able to enjoy the shiitake mushrooms to the absolute fullest!
I was a bit worried that the pepper might be too spicy, but it wasn't spicy at all.
Even as someone who can't handle spice, I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Mirin-Dried Sardine
Next, the mirin-dried sardine was served with a dipping sauce.
It was mayonnaise sprinkled with shichimi (seven-flavor chili pepper).
Pairing the mirin-dried sardine with this savory sauce
gave it a nutty, rich flavor reminiscent of dried fish jerky.
It's the ultimate snack that practically begs you to order a cold beer!
5-Piece Sashimi Platter
Since the main highlight of the night was the primitive-style grilled fish, I honestly didn't expect much from the 5-piece sashimi platter.
But of course, this is Japan, where sashimi reigns supreme!
The slices were so thick, fresh, and wonderfully chewy. I was seriously impressed!
Grilled King Prawn
I initially thought only the unique grilling process would be interesting,
and didn't expect the flavor of the grilled prawn to be anything out of the ordinary.
But the prawn was absolutely massive and plump!
Because it was grilled so perfectly, the inside was
incredibly bouncy and juicy. I was completely satisfied!
Grilled Sardine
✨The main event of the night!✨
The grilled prawn was great, but I was most curious about the grilled fish!
Since you have to peel the prawn, you don't really get that crispy texture,
but with the grilled sardine, you can eat the skin! That's why
you get that perfect "crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside" sensation.
We literally came all the way here for our very first meal in Osaka just to try this,
making a special trip right after arriving,
and it was worth every single minute. Absolutely outstanding!
Black Shari Sushi
True to Japan's reputation, the sushi was absolutely amazing.
But what made it truly special was the sushi rice (shari).
Instead of the usual white rice, it was actually black!
The squid sushi was topped with bamboo charcoal salt,
making it look incredibly unique and taste even more delicious.
Green Tea Ice Cream Monaka
No multi-course meal is complete without dessert!
To wrap things up, we had matcha monaka ice cream.
The matcha flavor was incredibly rich and authentic, just as you'd expect in Japan.
It was the perfect balance of sweet and wonderfully bitter notes.
We finished off the dessert with a warm cup of green tea,
bringing a cozy and satisfying end to a fantastic meal.
What are the best drinks to pair with the meal?
Charcoal Lemon Sour & Charcoal Salt Lemon Sour
Left: Charcoal Salt Lemon Sour | Right: Charcoal Lemon Sour
I thought a cold beer would be the perfect match for primitive-style grilled fish,
but when I looked at the drink menu, I saw some really unique options!
Since we were already there, I wanted to try something different,
so I ordered the Charcoal Lemon Sour and the Charcoal Salt Lemon Sour.
Since they contain actual charcoal, they had a striking black color...
At first glance, it’s hard to tell which drink is which,
but they tasted completely different!
The one without salt was super refreshing and citrusy,
while the one with salt had a distinct, savory kick that made it incredibly unique.
Orange Juice
My mom doesn't drink alcohol, so she went with the orange juice,
and she absolutely loved how rich and fresh it tasted.
So, even if you’re traveling with friends who prefer non-alcoholic drinks,
this is still a fantastic spot to enjoy some incredible hearth-grilled fish together!
How to Book
Robata × Sushi Hana Ura-Fukushima is already a massive hit among locals,
and it’s quickly catching on with travelers too.
If you don't book in advance, you might end up waiting in a long line
or, even worse, getting turned away at the door.
In fact, I booked our table right at opening time,
and it didn't take long for the restaurant to fill up with local regulars.
It would be such a bummer to travel all the way to Osaka and miss out on this spectacular, traditional hearth-grilled fish experience, right?
To make sure you get a seat,
I highly recommend making a reservation before you go.
You can easily book through Google or Tabelog, so I’ve linked them right below!
