1. Our Visit to Gyukatsu Tomita: The Restaurant Worth Waiting For!

I often travel to Japan for both leisure and business,
but this time, my husband and I poured our hearts into a true culinary adventure,
enjoying a gourmet trip to Osaka, Japan.

My husband isn't a fan of seafood and is truly passionate about meat,
a true carnivore who had always wanted to try authentic gyukatsu in Japan.
So, we decided to visit Gyukatsu Tomita, a famous Japanese restaurant,
which recently shot to fame among Korean travelers after comedian Park Myeong-su raved about it on the YouTube show 'Hwalmyeongsu'.

To give you the conclusion upfront,
we did get to taste delicious gyukatsu, just as the rumors said.
However, with so many incredible restaurants in Japan,
if you ask me if it's worth waiting one or two hours during your precious Osaka free travel itinerary,
it's a place where I find it hard to give a definitive 'yes'.

Its immense popularity naturally builds high expectations for the taste while waiting,
so it seems many people share my sentiment.
Let me share all the details about 'Gyukatsu Tomita',
which has emerged as a hot spot in Osaka, including its location, waiting situation,
the restaurant's ambiance, and of course, the taste.
2. Gyukatsu Tomita: Location and Waiting Times

Operating Hours
11:00 AM - 9:00 PM
The restaurant is located on the second floor of a building near Namba Station and Dendentown intersection,
making it easily accessible on foot while exploring Dotonbori or Namba.

Though it already had some buzz as a beef cutlet restaurant,
it truly cemented its status as a top gyukatsu spot in the Namba area of Osaka.
This was thanks to its unique cooking method—crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside—reminiscent of the famous 'Motomura' gyukatsu chain from Tokyo, combined with its charming personal mini-grill system.

What's more, its popularity skyrocketed after the 'Hwalmyeongsu' broadcast,
and now, waiting 1 to 2 hours before or after meal times is standard.
Some reviews claimed that if you avoided peak meal times on weekdays, there would be little to no wait.
I visited just outside the peak season,
and since it was near my accommodation,
I passed by it every day during my trip.
Throughout the entire week, the waiting line was consistently long at all times of the day.

Since there are no separate reservations or kiosks,
you simply have to walk in and join the queue on-site.
it might be a challenging restaurant to visit for those with tight Osaka travel itineraries, as it requires setting aside some time.
Even though we kept an eye on things and did a weekday "open run" (arrived right at opening),
there were already dozens of people ahead of us in line.
We started waiting at 10:40 AM
and finally got in after lining up for over an hour.
Since the queue was getting long and couldn't block other storefronts,
they had us extend the line around the block to the front of a slightly embarrassing TENGA store.

Located on the second floor, we had to wait quite a while even after entering the building and heading up the stairs.
The interior is quite cozy, with only a few counter seats and a few tables, which only makes the line longer!
3. Gyukatsu Menu

To speed up ordering,
they show you the menu while you're waiting in line.
There's even a Korean menu, so ordering is a breeze!
You have to order at least one Gyukatsu set per person,
but don't worry, the portions are quite manageable, so you'll definitely be able to finish it all.

Option 3

Option 4
Gyukatsu Barley Rice Set (260g) + Yamaimo

My husband, who doesn't like yamaimo and prefers a larger portion, ordered Option 2,
while I, who enjoys yamaimo and wanted a lighter meal,
ordered Option 3.

🍺
Each set includes cabbage, miso soup, and potato salad, but additional servings are
100 yen each. They even offer one free refill of rice!
Since the meat can be a bit rich, a cold draft beer sounds perfect.
Draft beer is 600 yen, and a cola is 400 yen.
4. A Rich, Meaty Flavor You Can Truly Savor

After waiting for over an hour with rumbling stomachs during our precious Osaka itinerary,
you can imagine how hungry we were when we finally got in!
And it was, as expected, absolutely delicious.

Once they lit the personal grill placed at each seat,
we carefully grilled each piece of gyukatsu, admiring its artful, ruby-red cross-section, before savoring every bite.

The thin, crispy coating enveloped the beef,
and after just a quick sear on the grill,
one bite released a flood of rich beef juices and savory flavors.

After a couple of bites of just the meat, it started to feel a little rich,
so I enjoyed pairing it with the special soy sauce provided and the zesty kick of wasabi.
Since my set also came with yamaimo sauce,
I mixed it into my rice, topped it with a piece of meat, and savored every delicious mouthful.

I'm quite accustomed to yamaimo sauce as I travel to Japan frequently.
It has a slightly tart, savory, and thick texture, so it's definitely a flavor that might divide opinions.
However, more than any other sauce, the simple combination of salt and wasabi
really brought out the beef's natural flavor, making it a perfect match.

I'm personally a huge fan of root vegetables,
and this potato salad, with just the right chunky texture,
was so delicious and had a great mouthfeel.
It also paired perfectly with the meat.
The crunchy cabbage salad was wonderfully refreshing too!
We sat at the corner of the counter seats, and since it was an open kitchen,
the cabbage shredding machine right in front of us kept going non-stop,
so watching it was quite entertaining!
4. Concluding Our Osaka Food Journey

In Namba, the heart of any Osaka trip,
this place is incredibly famous,
so my husband and I visited it with great curiosity.
It was a gyukatsu restaurant.

With its crispy exterior and tender interior, plus the fun of grilling each piece on our personal mini-grill,
the gyukatsu's perfection and flavor truly made it an excellent Japanese eatery.
Even my husband, a true meat-lover, finished his meal feeling fully satisfied.
However, if you're on a tight schedule enjoying a free-and-easy trip to Osaka, Japan,
you might want to think a bit about whether it's truly worth enduring
a long 1-2 hour wait just to visit.
It seemed like something to consider.

After all, there are many fantastic alternative eateries all over Japan.
Nevertheless, if you're determined to experience this popular gyukatsu set meal,
I recommend trying to visit during off-peak dining hours.
Wishing you a successful Japanese food adventure this time too!
