Our Honest Review: Takoyaki Ebisu in Osaka Dotonbori

When you think of Osaka's soul food, what immediately comes to mind? For many, it's the iconic takoyaki!
I'm such a fan that I make it a point to eat takoyaki at least once a day whenever I'm in Osaka.
Today, for those of you who share my passion, I'm thrilled to share an izakaya in Osaka where you can perfectly pair takoyaki with a refreshing beer in the evening!

Takoyaki Ebisu |
Hours: 11:00 AM - 5:00 AM Closed: Never Location: Approximately a 5-minute walk from the east entrance of Dotonbori |
Takoyaki Ebisu, where I recently visited, is conveniently located just about a 5-minute walk from the Dotonbori area.
It's also close to Kintetsu Nipponbashi Station, making it an ideal spot for a casual late-night snack after a day of exploring.
What makes this place special is that it's slightly removed from the main tourist thoroughfares. This means that even late into the evening, you'll find it packed primarily with locals, offering a truly authentic izakaya experience.

The restaurant's entrance is completely open, with outdoor terrace seating that's often claimed by locals, creating an initially bustling and perhaps a little intimidating atmosphere. (The staff can also have quite stern expressions!)
But don't let that deter you; if you brave it and step inside, the staff will usually greet you with a smile and show you to your table.

Outside the restaurant, you can easily check out the menu items and prices before stepping in. This is great for avoiding any surprises and ensuring they have exactly what you're craving.
Their signature dishes include takoyaki, yakisoba, and okonomiyaki, but they also offer a good variety of iron plate dishes and fried items. The menu is well-organized with photos matched to prices, making ordering straightforward even if you don't speak Japanese.

I visited in July 2026, and they had just started offering new iron plate horumon dishes. While I didn't see a full English menu, it was interesting to note that some items had Korean descriptions.

When we arrived around 10 PM, the place was full except for a large group table.
The owner kindly asked if we'd be willing to sit there temporarily and move if a larger party arrived, which we happily agreed to.

Most of the menu had little to no English, so I used a translation app. Takoyaki (8 pieces) costs ¥600, while soba/udon dishes start around ¥900. Beer and highballs are priced around ¥500. Overall, the prices offer pretty good value for money.

We started by ordering a beer and a Calpis. It's common in Japanese izakayas for staff to ask for your drink order as soon as you sit down.
This is part of the culture – you typically order drinks first, then take your time to browse the food menu. (A draft beer for the first round is practically a national custom in Japan!)

Our first dish, the takoyaki, arrived quickly. Since they were warmed rather than freshly cooked, they were warm but not piping hot.
While not exceptionally gourmet, they were perfectly enjoyable and made a great accompaniment to our beers.

Next up was the Yaki Udon, which tasted like udon noodles stir-fried on a hot plate with takoyaki sauce.
The sauce had a sweet, teriyaki-like flavor, but the udon noodles themselves weren't particularly chewy; they had a texture similar to standard packaged noodles.

Takoyaki Ebisu might not be the most gourmet restaurant in Osaka, but it's an excellent izakaya for a casual late-night drink and snack.
It's clearly a local favorite, offering a fantastic opportunity to soak in the authentic local atmosphere. Plus, the staff were surprisingly friendly, which was a pleasant bonus.
The food also came out quite quickly, making it a convenient spot for a quick bite.
If you're looking to enjoy takoyaki with a beer or need a laid-back izakaya for a late-night stop, I highly recommend checking out Takoyaki Ebisu.

Takoyaki Ebisu is located about a 5-minute walk from the right entrance of Dotonbori. It's also close to Kintetsu Nippombashi Station, making it convenient for a casual visit after your evening plans.
During a visit in July 2025, 8 pieces of takoyaki were ~$4. Soba and udon dishes started from ~$6.
I didn't see a separate Korean menu during my visit, but some menu items had Korean descriptions. In Japanese izakayas, it's common practice to order drinks first as soon as you sit down, and then take your time deciding on food items.
