✔︎ Travelers seeking a 24-hour izakaya near Dotonbori
✔︎ Those looking for a value-for-money sushi spot
✔︎ Anyone wanting an authentic izakaya experience favored by locals

On our first day in Osaka, my dad and I initially planned a quick lunch at Kuromon Market. However, even considering its reputation for being pricey, the sticker shock was real. Seeing a few pieces of tempura priced at 5,000 yen (about ~$33 USD, compared to an expectation of around ~$4 USD) really made me understand why some call it the 'Kitchen of Osaka' but with a premium. We had to pivot our plans, and while heading towards Ichiran Ramen (which we originally saved for a late-night craving), my dad spotted the signboard for Sennichimae Maguro Center. Being hungry and a bit hangry, we were immediately drawn in and decided to give it a try.

Upon entering, the strong smell of cigarette smoke was quite noticeable, almost making me want to leave. But my dad was starving and insisted we stay. It's important to note that this is a **smoking-friendly establishment**, so the smoky atmosphere is unavoidable. They also have a **2-hour seating limit**, though if you're sensitive to smoke, you'll likely be out before then anyway!
Right as you enter, the staff will inform you about the seating limit and the otoshi (cover charge).

The interior has a lively, authentic vibe. We only saw one other group of non-locals; the rest were predominantly Japanese patrons. Even for a late lunch, the place was bustling with people.

My dad and I love a festive atmosphere, so we opted for a table that felt like an indoor-outdoor hybrid, adding to the energetic feel!
Sennichimae Maguro Center Menu

As an izakaya known for its "value" (though I wasn't entirely convinced on all fronts), the menu was extensive. While English and Korean translations were available, they were printed in such tiny font that it was a struggle to read. It definitely made ordering a bit challenging!

Ordering is done via QR code. Once scanned, the menu was unfortunately only in Japanese. While you could use a translation app or ChatGPT, we decided to just wing it, looking at pictures and recognizable words. We ordered **Maguro Tako Wasabi**, a **Sushi Set**, **Grilled Whole Squid**, **Draft Beer**, **Bottled Beer**, and **Cola**.

Chopsticks and various condiments were available on the table, but we primarily stuck to just the chopsticks.
Edamame (Otoshi)
~$3 USD per person

We didn't specifically order these, but in Osaka, many izakayas have an otoshi, or cover charge, which often comes with a small appetizer. These edamame were our otoshi, costing ~$3 USD per person. For three of us, that was about ~$8 USD total. While it initially felt a bit odd to pay for something we didn't order, they were surprisingly salty and delicious!
Maguro Tako Wasabi
~$3 USD

When ordering, I thought the **Maguro Tako Wasabi at ~$3 USD** was incredibly cheap! However, when it arrived, I quickly realized it wasn't such a bargain after all. The photo on the menu made it look like a generous portion, but it came in a tiny dish with very little actual tako wasabi. I was a bit confused, to say the least!
That said, if you're a big fan of wasabi, I **highly recommend ordering it!** The wasabi flavor was intensely strong. If you're not a fan of powerful wasabi, you might want to **pass on this one**.
Omakase 8-Piece Sushi Platter
~$9 USD

After the rather disappointing Maguro Tako Wasabi, I was genuinely worried the sushi might also be a letdown. But thankfully, despite its unassuming appearance, the sushi tasted great! It completely redeemed the meal after the initial shock. For its price, it was quite satisfying, and I definitely recommend it.
Grilled Whole Squid
~$5 USD

This dish took a while to arrive, making us wonder if it had been forgotten. But the wait was worth it! I honestly thought it was **even more delicious than the sushi**. The savory soy-based sauce was perfectly seasoned. My family enjoys salty flavors, so we absolutely loved it. However, if you prefer less salty dishes, the sushi might be more to your liking!
Draft Beer & Cola

Along with our food, we ordered a cola and a medium draft beer.

The cola was wonderfully refreshing.

After trying the draft beer, we decided to order a bottled beer as well. The glass they provided was surprisingly small, which was a bit amusing, but the bottled beer itself felt quite substantial compared to typical domestic bottled beers. Overall, we were satisfied!

✔︎ Review of Sennichimae Maguro Center: Dotonbori's 24-Hour Izakaya & Sushi Spot
While the initial cigarette smoke and the surprisingly small portion of Tako Wasabi were a bit off-putting, the delicious sushi and especially the grilled whole squid made up for it. Its prime location near Dotonbori and its 24-hour operation are definite highlights. If you don't mind a smoky atmosphere, I highly recommend checking out Sennichimae Maguro Center for an authentic, late-night Osaka izakaya experience.
