Today, having experienced Osaka Castle firsthand in the heart of summer,
we're excited to share our insider tips for visiting the main tower,
step-by-step instructions for booking tickets, and our honest review of the entire experience!
To explore the Osaka Castle Main Tower,
you'll need to grab an admission ticket.
There are essentially two ways to secure your tickets:
buying them on-site or pre-booking through an agency.
And let me tell you, I wholeheartedly recommend
pre-booking through an agency!
The reason is clear from the photo above:
the line on the left (number 2) is for visitors with pre-booked e-tickets,
while the line on the right (number 3) is for on-site ticket purchases.
Imagine waiting in the scorching summer sun for 30 minutes or more in July or August
just to buy your ticket – you'll be completely drained
before you even step foot inside the main tower!
(And trust us, Japan stays incredibly hot even into September.)
Since I had already booked my admission ticket through an agency,
I breezed through line number 2 and walked right in without a wait.
It was already quite a trek, and quite warm, climbing up to Osaka Castle from the subway station,
so stepping into the cool, air-conditioned main tower felt absolutely heavenly!

Next up, we'll dive into our experience entering the Osaka Castle Main Tower and
share our recommended route for exploring!
You can enter Osaka Castle through the entrance located right next to the ticket counter,
on the side that offers a magnificent view of the castle's front.
Since I had my QR admission ticket ready,
I simply scanned the QR code and walked straight in through line 2 – no fuss, no waiting!
Before heading inside, I also grabbed a main tower pamphlet, conveniently available in Korean
Since you can bring them, I made sure to grab one.
The Tenshukaku (main keep) of Osaka Castle isn't just a stunning reconstruction on the outside;
its interior is surprisingly modern and accessible!
What's even better is that, unlike many Japanese castles,
it actually has an elevator inside, making your exploration super comfortable and easy.
The castle is made up of 8 floors,
with levels 1 through 7 dedicated to fascinating exhibitions,
while the 8th floor offers incredible panoramic views as an observatory!
Quick tip: you'll find restrooms on the 2nd floor.
Also, remember that floors 3 and 4 are no-photography zones, so keep your cameras tucked away there!
Here's a pro-tip for truly experiencing Osaka Castle:
head straight up to the 5th floor, then make your way to the incredible 8th-floor
observatory first. Soak in those breathtaking views, and
*then* you can leisurely descend through the floors, enjoying the exhibitions as you go!
The 8th-floor observatory welcomes you with a wonderfully open and refreshing atmosphere,
and you'll likely find plenty of fellow adventurers already captivated by the stunning scenery!
What truly sets the Osaka Castle Tenshukaku's observatory apart from others?
It's the unique combination of a vibrant city skyline
*and* the breathtaking, lush green landscapes surrounding it!
You see, most observatories are nestled right in the heart of the urban jungle,
making such verdant views a rare treat.
And, from up here, I also got to see fascinating details of Osaka Castle that are usually only visible from the ground!
The magnificent dragon-carp carvings adorning the roof's edges
and the sprawling layout of the moat below were definitely sights worth catching.
Fun fact: even after almost 10 trips to Osaka,
this was my *very first time* ascending the Tenshukaku.
And honestly, the views were even more satisfying than I'd imagined!
Osaka Castle was originally constructed by the legendary Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
As you explore the exhibition halls, you'll discover fascinating displays detailing his incredible achievements and precious artifacts from his dynamic era
on every floor.

Now, from a Korean perspective, Toyotomi Hideyoshi is, understandably, viewed quite negatively due to his role in instigating the Imjin War (Japanese invasions of Korea).
However, for all you history buffs out there, it's incredibly insightful to observe how he is portrayed and evaluated within Japan –
a fascinating contrast to consider on your journey through history.
Beyond its incredible history, Osaka Castle also boasts impressive architectural features
and countless fantastic photo spots. So, I truly recommend
making your way inside at least once!
On the second floor, there's even a samurai costume experience zone,
where you can try on samurai attire for 500 yen per person.
If you're looking to capture some truly memorable photos, definitely give it a go!
You'll often hear a common saying in travel cafes and forums:
that Osaka Castle isn't really worth going inside.
This sentiment largely stems from the fact that it was rebuilt,
rather than perfectly preserving its original, traditional appearance.
Because of this, even though I've visited Osaka many times,
and passed by Osaka Castle about four times, this was my very first time
actually ascending to the main keep.
And let me tell you, there was so much more to see than I expected,
plus the view from the 8th-floor observation deck was absolutely stunning!
Additionally, other floors feature a variety of fascinating exhibits
and interactive experiences, offering plenty to explore and discover.
Given all this, I now truly believe that if you find yourself in Osaka, it's definitely worth
making the climb inside at least once!
Assuming you have the Osaka Amazing Pass,
a full tour will likely take about two hours.
(Without it, just getting your ticket can take up to 30 minutes!)
Keep this in mind and have a truly wonderful visit!
Advance reservations through an agency are recommended. During the peak summer months of July and August, you might have to wait in line for over 30 minutes in the scorching sun for on-site tickets. With an advance reservation, you can enter directly via line number 2 without waiting.
With the Osaka Amazing Pass, you can visit the Gozabune Boat Ride and the Figure Museum in addition to Osaka Castle Main Tower. You can also use the River Cruise and Tsutenkaku Tower observation deck, and ride the subway for free.
For viewing the interior of Osaka Castle Main Tower, it is recommended to go up to the 5th floor, explore the 8th-floor observation deck first, and then descend to view the exhibitions. The 3rd and 4th floors are areas where photography is prohibited.
On the 2nd floor of Osaka Castle Main Tower, you can experience trying on samurai attire. The cost for this experience is 500 yen per person.
